Safe But Not Wholesome: The Troubling State Of Trans Fat Regulation, Ross Williams
Safe But Not Wholesome: The Troubling State Of Trans Fat Regulation, Ross Williams
Journal of Food Law & Policy
On March 7, 2007, the New York Times reported that Starbucks, the retail coffee chain which sells millions of baked goods every day from its over 8,700 U.S. stores, had asked its suppliers to eliminate all trans fats from their products by the end of the year. The big story for New York readers, though, was not that Starbucks was requiring the elimination of trans fats from its baked goods. In fact, New York City had just passed an ordinance strictly limiting the use of artificial trans fats, the type present in partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (PHVO), by virtually all …

Harvey V. Veneman And The National Organic Program: Can Organic Be Synthetic?, Jennifer C. Fiser
Journal of Food Law & Policy
The market for organic products has increased dramatically in the United States and across the world in recent years.' Since 1997, sales of organic foods have grown from 15% to 21% per year, and while organic foods accounted for only 2.5% of total food sales in the United States in 2005, those sales amounted to $13.8 billion.
Defying Nature: The Ethical Implications Of Genetically Modified Plants, Debra M. Strauss
Defying Nature: The Ethical Implications Of Genetically Modified Plants, Debra M. Strauss
Journal of Food Law & Policy
Genetic engineering is changing the semantics, the meaning of life itself. We're trying to usurp the plant's choice. To force alien words into the plant's poem, but we [have] a problem. We barely know the root language. Genetic grammar's a mystery.... We've learned a lot about the letters-maybe our ability to read and spell words now sits halfway between accident and design - but our syntax is still haphazard. Scrambled. It's a semiotic nightmare.
Common Nutritional Deficiencies In The Three Richest Versus The Poorest Countries In The World: Why Are They Similar Or Different?, Ginger Ann Bailey
Common Nutritional Deficiencies In The Three Richest Versus The Poorest Countries In The World: Why Are They Similar Or Different?, Ginger Ann Bailey
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Over one billion people suffer from nutritional deficiencies, and they reside in both the poorest and the richest countries in the world. What needs to be determined is if the deficiencies are similar or different, and most importantly why. By learning what nutritional deficits exist in these countries and why they occur, we are then able to create appropriate interventions in order to improve the nutritional status of populations worldwide.
The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline
The Chasm Between Two Parallel Worlds, Brandi Harline
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In much of the research conducted on military issues, problems are identified years, sometimes decades, before the military publicly acknowledges these concerns; an example of this is sexual assault, which scholars discussed for over thirty years before the military acknowledged the issue. In this paper, I study the value differences between the military leadership and the scholars who study military topics and how these different values may hinder effective communication between the two groups. The method I use in identifying the standards by which the two groups identify problems is content analysis on articles published by the two communities, calculating …
Changes In Nitrogen Cycling During The Past Century In A Northern Hardwood Forest, Kendra K. Mclauchlan, Joseph M. Craine, W. Wyatt Oswald, Peter R. Leavitt, Gene E. Likens
Changes In Nitrogen Cycling During The Past Century In A Northern Hardwood Forest, Kendra K. Mclauchlan, Joseph M. Craine, W. Wyatt Oswald, Peter R. Leavitt, Gene E. Likens
Dartmouth Scholarship
Nitrogen (N) availability, defined here as the supply of N to terrestrial plants and soil microorganisms relative to their N demands, limits the productivity of many temperate zone forests and in part determines ecosystem carbon (C) content. Despite multidecadal monitoring of N in streams, the long-term record of N availability in forests of the northeastern United States is largely unknown. Therefore, although these forests have been receiving anthropogenic N deposition for the past few decades, it is still uncertain whether terrestrial N availability has changed during this time and, subsequently, whether forest ecosystems have responded to increased N deposition. Here, …
Reasons For Drinking In The College Student Context: The Differential Role And Risk Of The Social Motivator, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Eric R. Pedersen
Reasons For Drinking In The College Student Context: The Differential Role And Risk Of The Social Motivator, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer, Eric R. Pedersen
Heads Up!
Objective
The present study examines the relationships among reasons for drinking, alcohol consumption, and alcohol-related consequences in two college-aged samples. Personal motivators such as mood enhancement and coping (tension reduction) have consistently been shown to predict problematic alcohol use, but because of the salient nature of social drinking in college, we hypothesized that social reasons for drinking would be most frequently endorsed and, in turn, predict negative consequences.
Method
Two distinct samples—119 coed adjudicated students sanctioned by the university for violating campus alcohol policy and 106 co-ed volunteer students—completed measures assessing alcohol consumption, reasons for drinking, and consequences. Differential effects …

The Rise Of Controversial Content In Film, Ashley Haygood
The Rise Of Controversial Content In Film, Ashley Haygood
Masters Theses
This study looks at the change in controversial content in films during the 20th century. Original films made prior to 1968 and their remakes produced after were compared in the content areas of profanity, nudity, sexual content, alcohol and drug use, and violence. The advent of television, post-war effects and a proposed “Hollywood elite” are discussed as possible causes for the increase in controversial content. Commentary from industry professionals on the change in content is presented, along with an overview of American culture and the history of the film industry.
The Relationships Among Interracial Friendship, Personality, And Racial Attitudes, Paula A. Suchy
The Relationships Among Interracial Friendship, Personality, And Racial Attitudes, Paula A. Suchy
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Previous research indicates: that openness and agreeableness positively correlate with racial attitudes, and the importance of interracial friendship on reducing racial bias ( e.g.,Jackson & Poulsen, 2005). Hypotheses included: 1) individuals high on openness and/or agreeableness will report more positive racial attitudes, 2) positive racial attitudes will increase as the quantity and/or quality of interracial friendship increases, and 3) interracial friendship is a moderator between personality and racial attitudes. Participants (n = 217) completed an online survey containing the Big Five Inventory (2001 ), Brigham's ( 1993) Racial Attitudes Scale, a modified interracial contact questionnaire (Tropp and Pettigrew, 2005), Altemeyer's …

Evolutionary Theory And Political Leadership:Why Certain People Do Not Trust Decision Makers, Kevin Smith, Christopher W. Larimer, Levente Littvay, John R. Hibbing
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Central to social systems are the attitudes of the rank and file toward those who make political decisions (leaders), and attitudes toward leaders are known to be characterized by two fundamental features. First, the modal attitude is acceptance of the necessity of leaders coupled with acute aversion to leaders who are believed to be motivated by ambition and avarice; second, people are highly variable with some being markedly more sensitive than others to the traits of leaders. But the theoretical basis for these empirical facts has yet to be fully elucidated. In this article, we offer such a theory by …
The Impact Of Standardized Testing On Student Performance In The United States, Stephanie Linden
The Impact Of Standardized Testing On Student Performance In The United States, Stephanie Linden
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
In the United States, the current trend in education is the dependence on standardized testing to improve our current education system. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 mandates higher test scores and improved academic performance in schools nation-wide, especially inner city schools. This thesis will attempt to evaluate whether standardized testing and the methods used to assess high performance has helped to create a better education system in the United States, or whether it has hindered student performance. There has been much discussion about this topic, some positive and some not. In this paper I will present both …
Structural Adjustment Programs And The Delivery Of Health Care In The Third World, Bianca Brunelli
Structural Adjustment Programs And The Delivery Of Health Care In The Third World, Bianca Brunelli
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
World Bank and International Monetary Fund became involved in the 1982 Third World debt crisis in order to solve global economic difficulties. While these institutions were not created for this purpose, after a series of economic shocks in the 1970s, they swept in order to alleviate the economic difficulties Third World countries faced. By following a strict regime of neoliberal inspired policies, they attempted to alleviate the debt crunch. Despite intentions, the World Bank’s and IMF’s involvement has exacerbated poverty in the Third World. As demonstrated, key factors in structural adjustment programs have impeded health care delivery and have contributed …
Electrochemical Detection Of Prostate Carcinoma Biomarkers Using Nanotechnology, Kathryn Leonard
Electrochemical Detection Of Prostate Carcinoma Biomarkers Using Nanotechnology, Kathryn Leonard
Pell Scholars and Senior Theses
The first chapter of this thesis speaks about prostate specific antigen, carbon nanotubes and horseradish peroxidase. The second chapter discusses the electrochemistry and catalysis of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and myoglobin (Mb) covalently attached to vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays used as a tranducer. Cyclic voltammetry results gave quasi-reversible FeIII/FeII voltammetry and electrochemical catalysis involving catalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide for both the iron-heme enzymes in myoglobin and horseradish peroxidase coupled to the carboxylated ends of the carbon nanotube arrays by amine bioconjugation reactions. Reduction peak currents gave linear relationships with scan-rates, typical of thin layer voltammetry. Results suggest that the …

Preparation For Remarriage: Utilization Of Different Forms And Their Rated Helpfulness, Julie J. Miller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Remarriage has gained special attention in the past couple of decades from clinicians, researchers, and educators because of the unique issues faced by individuals entering such a relationship. Recognition of these issues increased marriage practitioners' hope that a shift in the social climate had led individuals to prepare for remarriage through various means. This study sought to, one, gain a current perspective on remarriage preparation; two, learn how individuals rate the helpfulness of preparation; and three, note any differences in remarital quality (remarital satisfaction and adjustment) and perceptions of preparedness between individuals who did or did not participate in preparation. …

The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of adolescent's motivation to change in therapy, specifically while residing in a residential treatment center (RTC) and participating in family therapy. Motivation for change was examined in three contexts. The first context for examining the adolescent's motivation for change was in relation to their stage of therapy. The second and third contexts for examining the adolescent's motivation for change was in relation to perceptions the adolescent's therapist and parent had of their motivation to change. In addition, the study explored whether there was a relationship between the congruence of perceptions of …
College Athletes’ Human Figure Drawings, Kaitlin Taggart
College Athletes’ Human Figure Drawings, Kaitlin Taggart
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
The demands of both lean and non-lean sports upon male athletes can lead to body image dissatisfaction and eating disorders. This study explored whether the Human Figure Drawing (HFD) is a valid method for assessing male college athletes’ body image. A total of 86 male athletes who were competitive on a lean (cross-country or wrestling) or non-lean (football or ice hockey) sport participated in the study. The score recorded on the Male Body Attitude Scale (MBAS) (Tylka, Bergeron, & Schwartz, 2005), a 24-question survey administered to each participant, focused specifically on assessing muscularity, body fat, and height attitudes of these …
A Group Art Therapy Intervention To Increase Self-Efficacy In Battered Women, Sheryl Marie Morrison
A Group Art Therapy Intervention To Increase Self-Efficacy In Battered Women, Sheryl Marie Morrison
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
Domestic violence is a problem that affects an estimated six million women every year (Berry, 1998). There are many theories that attempt to explain the phenomenon such as, learned helplessness and battered woman syndrome. It is clear that the affects of domestic violence can leave lasting damage in the survivor’s ability to cope and function. One aspect that might be hindered in battered women is self-efficacy. Self-efficacy is the degree to which one believes he or she has the ability to be successful. The Self-Efficacy Scale (SES) created by Sherer, et al. (1982) was used to assess the clients’ self-efficacy. …

Southern Nevada Agency Partnership Conservation Education And Interpretation Strategy, Allison Brody
Education about the Environment
Four federal agencies manage seven million acres of federal lands in Southern Nevada. Increasing demands for use of these public lands has created the need for those agencies to form a unique interagency partnership and to work cooperatively in support of agency missions, protection of natural resources, and public service.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Las Vegas Field Office, National Park Service (NPS) Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Desert National Wildlife Refuge Complex, and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Spring Mountains National Recreation Area formed the Southern Nevada Agency Partnership (SNAP) in 1997 …
Leaving A Leadership Legacy, Christine G. Springer
Leaving A Leadership Legacy, Christine G. Springer
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
The author reflects on the concept of leaving a leadership legacy on public administration. She states that it is all about making a difference and that means taking stands on things that matter in the field. It also means acting courageously where there is no money-back guarantee. Furthermore, she stresses that legacies are not just wishful thinking where public managers choose to leave will be based upon the life they lead.

The Productivity Effects Of Privatization In Ukraine: Estimates From Comprehensive Manufacturing Firm Panel Data, 1989-2005, J. David Brown, John S. Earle
The Productivity Effects Of Privatization In Ukraine: Estimates From Comprehensive Manufacturing Firm Panel Data, 1989-2005, J. David Brown, John S. Earle
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper estimates the effect of domestic and foreign privatization on multifactor productivity (MFP) using long panel data for nearly the universe of initially state-owned manufacturing firms in Ukraine. The longitudinal dimension of the data is used to measure and control for pre-privatization selection bias and to estimate long-run impacts. The data imply steadily increasing MFP as a result of domestic privatization, reaching about 25 percent relative to state-owned firms after six years. Until recently, Ukraine has had relatively few cases of privatization to foreign investors, and estimates of the MFP impact are more sensitive to controls for selection bias, …
