Difficulties Associated With Stepparenting As Predictors Of Remarital Satisfaction And Adjustment, Aaron I. Anderson
Difficulties Associated With Stepparenting As Predictors Of Remarital Satisfaction And Adjustment, Aaron I. Anderson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
As a result of high divorce and remarriage rates, stepfamilies have become commonplace in society. Researchers and clinicians have suggested that stepchildren can positively and negatively affect remarriage quality. Despite the increasing literature on stepfamilies, few studies have comparatively researched specific stepparenting difficulties as they affect marital satisfaction. Utilizing a sample of newlyweds, this study examines fourteen stepparenting related issues, as measured by the stepparenting subscale of the Questionnaire for Couples in Stepfamilies, and their relationship to marital satisfaction and adjustment.
Malnutrition In The Elderly In Long-Term Care Facilities, Cindy L. Pitcher
Malnutrition In The Elderly In Long-Term Care Facilities, Cindy L. Pitcher
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
In 2000, there were 17,000 nursing homes in the United States housing about 1.5 million residents over the age of 65. Approximately 75% of long-term residents are women. The average length of stay for residents is 2.5 years, so in essence the nursing home becomes their home. Those who are in these long-term care facilities are generally characterized as frail elderly adults who suffer from a host of chronic and acute diseases and conditions. They are most likely cognitively impaired and have a great number of limitations in their activities of daily living (ADL). In addition, data collected by the …
Hezbollah - Terrorist Or Not?, Erin E. Forsberg
Hezbollah - Terrorist Or Not?, Erin E. Forsberg
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Determining whether or not an organization such as Hezbollah is or is not a terrorist group is a rather arduous process, especially since the international community can not agree. However, due to the reasons why Hezbollah was first organized and the group's involvement in the Lebanese political system, along with its network of social services, Hezbollah is not a terrorist organization. In order to prove such a bold statement, the first step must undoubtedly be to come up with a workable and effective definition of terrorism that is hopefully free from moral implications. The second step would be to see …
The Novice Consultant And Electronic Mail: Strategies For And Implementation Of Politeness Techniques In Different Organizational Contexts, Nancy Annett
All Theses
This study examines the ways in which experienced and novice consultants in different organizational settings think about and use e-mail for communication to superiors. The methods by which novices in the workplace communicate via e-mail, especially to superiors, present a gap in the literature. Comparing novice and experienced employee e-mail behavior across organizational boundaries yielded several findings. First, employees seem to use particular decision criteria when formulating e-mail messages to managers, including considerations of the message's recipient and purpose. Novices seem most attuned to hierarchical levels and to the revision opportunities available through e-mail. Second, organizational context appears to affect …
Segmented Assimilation: The Effects Of Early Childhood Acculturation On Post-Secondary Educational Attainment, Christine Noelle Blackburn
Segmented Assimilation: The Effects Of Early Childhood Acculturation On Post-Secondary Educational Attainment, Christine Noelle Blackburn
All Theses
Utilizing the theory of segmented assimilation, this thesis examines the relationship between the type of acculturation experienced in early childhood and educational attainment. Data used in this study are from the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Survey, waves I through III. The author hypothesizes that the markers of acculturation type serve as significant predictors on 1) the number of years of total education and 2) the likelihood of receiving a four-year degree by the time the respondents neared their mid-twenties (when CILS-III was conducted). Multiple regressions, linear and logistic, are used to examine these hypotheses. The findings show support of utilizing …
Identity Talk Strategies Of Sheltered Homeless Women, Sarah Deward
Identity Talk Strategies Of Sheltered Homeless Women, Sarah Deward
All Theses
This thesis explores the identity talk strategies used by sheltered homeless women to navigate their personal identity in the midst of experiencing a deeply stigmatized social identity. Based on field observation and twenty qualitative interviews with sheltered homeless women at a Midwestern homeless shelter, this analysis examines the identity talk strategies used by sheltered women to disavow stigmatized social identities and to restore cognitive congruence. Using the identity talk framework of Snow and Anderson (1987), three categories of identity talk are explored: distancing, embracement, and fictive storytelling. Findings suggest that sheltered homeless women actively utilize these identity talk strategies to …
Taxation Maximaztion: Why States Tax The Way They Do, Adam Pope
Taxation Maximaztion: Why States Tax The Way They Do, Adam Pope
All Theses
This paper examines state tax systems and provides an explanation for their structure. The results of this study show that states maximize the value of a tax by increasing its use based on the demographic makeup of the state. Furthermore, this paper provides some evidence that groups are not successful in lobbying state legislatures to protect themselves from taxation.
Homophily And Online Networks: Young Adult Relationships In Myspace, Jennifer Turchi
Homophily And Online Networks: Young Adult Relationships In Myspace, Jennifer Turchi
All Theses
This paper examines the characteristics of online social networks. The researcher collected the data used in the study between January 3, 2007 and January 10, 2007. 150 networks were collected from MySpace.com, an online social networking site, along with six features from the profiles of those in the networks--race/ethnicity, education, religion, reasons for joining, profile background, and music. Two regression models were used to determine the effects of homophily on network density and network embeddedness.
The regression models show that homophily for race/ethnicity, religion, music, and reasons for joining did not significantly affect network embeddedness or network density. Background and …
Orthodoxy And The New Russia, Jonathan Clarke, Duncan Reid Thd, Med
Orthodoxy And The New Russia, Jonathan Clarke, Duncan Reid Thd, Med
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
This paper examines the contemporary phenomenon of the reemergence of the Orthodox Church not only as the leading religious institution of post-Soviet Russia, but also as a core marker of identity. The disappearance of the Soviet Union has produced a profound crisis of idemity in Russia. Traditional markers of identity, particularly the Orthodox Church, have assumed an importance hardly anticipated before the collapse of the USSR.
Factors Affecting The Formation Of Interest Groups, Aileen Sampson
Factors Affecting The Formation Of Interest Groups, Aileen Sampson
All Dissertations
This paper presents empirical information to assist in answering the question: Why does the number of interest groups vary from one political jurisdiction to another? This paper's contribution to the understanding of the political economy of collective behavior is an empirical, cross-sectional study of interest group formation in the United States. The unit of observation is the county circa 2000. On a per capita basis, this study finds that lower voter participation rates, higher government expenditures, and higher religious adherence, on average, are consistent with the formation of more interest groups. On the other hand, having a higher number of …
Product Liability Litigation: An Issue Of Merck And Lawsuits Over Vioxx, Kurt Rotthoff
Product Liability Litigation: An Issue Of Merck And Lawsuits Over Vioxx, Kurt Rotthoff
All Dissertations
Merck & Co., Inc. pulled Vioxx, a $2.5 billon a year nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, off the shelf in September 2004. The removal followed a study that was published reporting Vioxx increased the risk of cardiovascular events after long-term use. In the years since then, many lawsuits have been filed against Merck. This paper examines the incentive to recall a product and the effects of Merck pulling Vioxx from the shelves. Using the market's expected internal rate of return for Merck, I calculate the expected profits from future Vioxx sales. I then use data on financial effects, along with the outcomes …

Tianxia, Empire And The World: Soft Power And China’S Foreign Policy Discourse In The 21st Century, William A. Callahan
Tianxia, Empire And The World: Soft Power And China’S Foreign Policy Discourse In The 21st Century, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
China’s recent ‘charm offensive’ is captivating the world stage. Although there has been a thorough cataloguing of China’s soft power assets in terms of the effectiveness and limitations of the PRC’s public diplomacy, much less attention has been paid to how the normative aspect of China’s growing soft power will set the world agenda. This essay will examine the concept of ‘Tianxia’ to understand Chinese visions of world order. Tianxia is interesting both because it was key to the governance and self-understanding of three millennia of Chinese empire, and also because discussion of Tianxia is becoming popular again in the …

Consumption, Time Preference, And The Life Cycle, Michael Charles Bailey
Consumption, Time Preference, And The Life Cycle, Michael Charles Bailey
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
This paper presents two life-cycle models of consumption implementing novel assumptions about time preference and subjective time. The goal of this paper is to investigate implications of the existence of subjective time to consumption decisions over the life cycle. The first model is a model of 'systematic impatience' and implements the assumption of increasing subjective time by specifying a time dependent rate of time preference upon which the rational consumers in this model maximize lifetime utility. The second model investigates consumer behavior in subjective time, or the subjective sense of the actual passage of time. Consumers in this model maximize …
Child Sexual Abuse: Development Of Psychiatric Disorders And Interventions, Toshikazu Kuroda
Child Sexual Abuse: Development Of Psychiatric Disorders And Interventions, Toshikazu Kuroda
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Child sexual abuse has become a serious social concern due to the recent report of its higher incidence rate than commonly believed. This form of child abuse has been proposed to bring about adverse effects on children's development since more than one century ago. However, research over past decades reveals that effects of sexual abuse are extremely complex and diverse. Particularly, there appear to be many unclear factors increasing the probability for the development of psychiatric disorders in sexually abused children. The present paper investigated how child sexual abuse creates diversity over the course of the victims' development from multiple …

Interpersonal Distance In Social Relationships And Mental Health Outcomes In A Glbt Sample, Kristina Mcdougal
Interpersonal Distance In Social Relationships And Mental Health Outcomes In A Glbt Sample, Kristina Mcdougal
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Ample research has been conducted on how heterosexuals distance themselves from gays and lesbians through lack of emotional attachment, job discrimination, and lack of familial support, yet there has been little research on how people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT) view this distancing. To examine the distancing from the point of view of people in a GLBT sample we surveyed 200 GLBT people at the Annual Pride Not Prejudice celebration in Salt Lake City. Participants were asked how they viewed their relationship with their parents, and how they perceived their parents religiosity. Participants also completed the Beck …
Akerlof And Kranton On Identity In Economics: Inverting The Analysis, John B. Davis
Akerlof And Kranton On Identity In Economics: Inverting The Analysis, John B. Davis
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
The concept of identity was introduced into the neoclassical utility maximising framework by Akerlof and Kranton in an analysis which draws directly from social psychology's social identity approach and self-categorisation theory. This paper examines their analysis, and compares the social identity approach and an alternative social psychology identity framework called the sociological approach to identity. Using this comparison, the paper argues that their treating identity as an argument in the utility function leaves unaddressed how individuals' different social identities are related. The paper suggests a framework for addressing this issue by embedding their utility function in a personal identity objective …

Missing The Point, Colin Thomas-Jensen

“What would happen if we thought of Darfur as we do of Iraq, as a place with a history and politics—a messy politics of insurgency and counterinsurgency?” (§4). This is the most telling question posed by Professor Mahmood Mamdani in “The Politics of Naming: Genocide, Civil War, Insurgency.” The implication is that the growing public demand for strong international action—military or otherwise—to halt the atrocities in Darfur is somehow unwarranted because people have failed to understand that the systematic crimes against humanity committed against civilians in Darfur (and indeed Iraq) are an inevitability of “the messy politics of insurgency and …
Measuring Empathy, Feedback, Therapeutic Alliance, And Outcome With Sexual Offenders, Adam G. Fenske
Measuring Empathy, Feedback, Therapeutic Alliance, And Outcome With Sexual Offenders, Adam G. Fenske
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
Research has found the therapeutic alliance to be the strongest predictor of successful outcomes from treatment (Orlinsky, Ronnestad, & Willutzki, 2003) . While many populations have been studied to determine successful outcomes through the strengthening of the therapeutic alliance, psychological literature lacks research targeting the specific group of sexual offenders. The present research addressed this gap in psychological literature. Research focused upon three treatment groups involving 19 sexual offenders. The study investigated four hypotheses: (a) symptoms will be reduced as a result of treatment, (b) helping alliance will improve over time in treatment, (c) the strength of the helping alliance …

Politics Of Naming And Politics Of Responsibility, Rhoda Howard-Hassmann
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Mahmood Mamdani is right to complain that the American—and international—public is unaware of the political complexity of the Darfur conflict. He is also right to point out that selective or inconsistent uses of the terms “genocide,” “civil war,” and “insurgency” can mask covert, or even overt, political agendas. His comparison of Darfur to Iraq is telling. And he is right to point out that even with the best of humanitarian intentions, the presentation of a simplified version of Darfur, in which “Arabs” persecute “Africans,” can play into the “war on terror,” insofar as, in the minds of at least some …

Reforming The Government : Rationale, Principles And Proposed Approach, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles
A legitimate question that is often raised by those working for the Government in Pakistan but not the outsiders is: Why reform the Government? Most of them believe that things are going well and the costs of bringing about these reforms will prove to be disruptive for the economy as well as for administration. We had inherited a strong, robust system from the British that has been tried and tested over time and there is hardly any compelling reason to bring about any major structural changes. In order to address this question we have to provide the rationale for bringing …

Rhode Island Family Court And The Best Interests Of Children, Alexandra Arnold
Senior Honors Projects
With the continuous rise of the divorce rate in America, there is also an increase in the number of children and adolescents who must suffer through the divorce along with their parents. For some, the divorce is a relief and can be a positive change in their lives. For others, it is difficult and devastating, filled with conflict and tension. Whatever the circumstances, there are permanent effects that children experience as a result of their parents’ divorce. These effects of divorce on children are becoming better known as generations of children grow up in a single parent home. The court …
