How The Success Of Open Access Publishing Can Stimulate Improved Access To Grey Literature, Marcus A. Banks

Urban Library Journal

With a focus on biomedicine and public health, this paper will demonstrate that the emerging success of open access publishing provides a model for improved access to grey literature. It will describe pioneering efforts to provide access to grey literature, and recommend ways to build upon these initiatives. Finally, it will argue that the evolution of electronic scholarship will eventually collapse the distinction between grey and non-grey literature.

The Convenient Alliance: President Reagan And Pope John Paul Ii, Cold Warriors, Tighe P. Flatley

Senior Honors Projects

Historians and non-scholars alike have long regarded the work of President Reagan and Pope John Paul II to be a tremendous force in helping to end the Cold War. In 1992, Time Magazine cited the relationship as a “Holy Alliance”, a political partnering of two men who, after surviving separate assassination attempts merely six weeks apart, saw their role in global politics as a divine signal to promote the free world and take down communism internationally. By the time the President and the Pope first met at the Vatican in 1982, the two were privately discussing Cold War politics. They …

La Double Vie De Baudelaire: Le Trouble Bipolaire Et La Dépendance À L’Opium, Kristen Murphy

Senior Honors Projects

Charles Baudelaire (April 9th, 1821- August 31st,1867) the nineteenth century French poet, was an eccentric and scandalous character who pushed the boundaries of decency and literature quotidianly. Today he is considered the father of the modernist literary movements and is well respected in literary circles. However, during Baudelaire’s lifetime, his great work Les Fleurs du Mal (The Flowers of Evil) was censored by the French government, he was constantly bankrupt, attempted suicide once, and was an opium addict. Charles Baudelaire did not lead a cheerful life and his works show this darkness. In Les Fleurs du Mal, Baudelaire constantly refers …

Using The Technology Of The Confessional As An Analytical Resource: Four Analytical Stances Towards Research Interviews In Discourse Analysis, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt May 2007

Using The Technology Of The Confessional As An Analytical Resource: Four Analytical Stances Towards Research Interviews In Discourse Analysis, Brendan O'Rourke, Martyn Pitt

Articles

Among the various approaches that have developed from FOUCAULT's work is an Anglophone discourse analysis that has attempted to combine FOUCAULTian insights with the techniques of Conversation Analysis. An important current methodological issue in this discourse analytical approach is its theoretical preference for "naturally occurring" rather than research interview data. A FOUCAULTian perspective on the interview as a research instrument, questions the idea of "naturally-occurring discourse". The "technology of the confessional" operates, not only within research interviews, but permeates other interactions as well. Drawing on FOUCAULT does not dismiss the problems of the interview as research instrument rather it shows …

The Media’S Influence In Everyday Life On Women’S Perception Of Body Image, Sarah Christian May 2007

The Media’S Influence In Everyday Life On Women’S Perception Of Body Image, Sarah Christian

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Many women are not satisfied with their current body figures and frequently attempt to improve their figure. Body image discrepancies occur when a comparison between “actual” self to either “ought” or “ideal” selves don’t match up. If there is a difference between these two self-guides then a discrepancy exists. According to a national survey, half of women report negative evaluations of their appearance and worry about being or becoming overweight. One of the strongest socio-cultural pressures that women face with their body image is the media, such as magazines and television. Studies have shown that when exposed to thin body …

Political Engagement Through Debates: Young Citizens’ Reactions To The 2004 Presidential Debates, Mitchell S. Mckinney, Sumana Chattopadhyay May 2007

Political Engagement Through Debates: Young Citizens’ Reactions To The 2004 Presidential Debates, Mitchell S. Mckinney, Sumana Chattopadhyay

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This study examines how exposure to a televised debate affects young citizens’ normative democratic tendencies, attitudes that have been linked to increased civic and political participation, including voting behavior. The authors also are interested in the confidence young citizens express in the political knowledge they possess—their political information efficacy—and specifically how confidence in one’s knowledge may be affected by exposure to such a sustained and “information-rich” source of campaign information as a 90-minute candidate debate. Findings reveal that debates strengthen, at least in the short term, democratic attitudes and also strengthen young citizens’ levels of political information efficacy.

One hundred and seventeen participants viewed photographs of zoo exhibits, 10 from each of the following categories: artificial exhibit with artificial enrichment, artificial exhibit with naturalistic enrichment, naturalistic exhibit with naturalistic enrichment, and naturalistic exhibit with artificial enrichment. Participants rated the photographs on exhibit aesthetic appeal, perceived animal happiness, and effectiveness of the enrichment. Pre- and posttest ratings of the importance of zoo roles were also collected. Results showed support for the hypothesis that participants provided …

Do You Have The Time? Changes In And Implications Of Spouses' Time Together, Jeffrey P. Dew May 2007

Do You Have The Time? Changes In And Implications Of Spouses' Time Together, Jeffrey P. Dew

Faculty Publications

Many Americans say they do not spend enough time with their families. Social changes such as increased productivity expectations in the workplace and the movement of mothers into the paid labor force have added to the feeling that family time is scarce. Time is perceived to be an extremely rare commodity in the U.S., and families desire to spend more of it together.

Encoding Specificity: Applied To Communication Patterns In Recall Processes, Makandal P. Daaga May 2007

Encoding Specificity: Applied To Communication Patterns In Recall Processes, Makandal P. Daaga

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

This study investigated the concept of encoding specificity and attempted to apply it to communication patterns and memory. The hypothesis stated that similar forms of communication during encoding and recall would lead to improved recall performance. Forty undergraduate students were recruited to participate in two free recall trials where the modality of communication (visual vs. auditory) was manipulated to test the hypothesis. Participants were presented with two word lists (15 words each) either via visually (visual) or via audio recording (auditory) and asked to recall either via writing (visual) or speaking (auditory).Trials involving similar forms of communication displayed significantly higher …

Random Walks And Half-Lives In Chilean And Mexican Peso Real Exchange Rates: 1980 - 2003, Andre V. Mollick May 2007

Random Walks And Half-Lives In Chilean And Mexican Peso Real Exchange Rates: 1980 - 2003, Andre V. Mollick

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

Several papers have shown that high-inflation contributes to mean reversion in real exchange rates. This paper studies the Chilean peso (CLP) and Mexican peso (MXN) real exchange rates over 1980-2003. Three datasets are used: two with quarterly and monthly bilateral data (against the U.S. dollar) with consumer and producer price indices and another with monthly real effective rate exchange rates (REER). Unit root tests do not reject the root in levels for both currencies. Half-lives, however, contrast markedly: at 5 years or infinity for the Chilean peso and between 1 and 3 years for the Mexican peso. These findings suggest …

How To Get More From Your Quantitative Libqual+™ Dataset: Making Results Practical, Bradford W. Dennis, Tim Bower

University Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

This research paper outlines three analytic tools utilized in the analysis and interpretation of LibQUAL+™ quantitative data. D-M scores, value rankings, and split-file cross-tabulations were used to assess the service items from the 2004 LibQUAL+™ quantitative data.

We suggest that these tools provide a way to more easily utilize LibQUAL+™ results in taking actions and developing strategic plans designed to improve patrons’ perceptions of service quality. These tools also allow for the continuous evaluation of implemented plans. We discuss how these tools helped produce findings that were informative and in a format that decision makers could easily comprehend and utilize.

How Critical Is Us Assistance?, Sara Agha Husain Dr. May 2007

How Critical Is Us Assistance?, Sara Agha Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

The article examines US economic and military assistance to Pakistan since September 2001, breaking it down into debt relief, military aid, economic assistance and reimbursements for logistics support. Using four key indicators, the author argues that even a complete withdrawal of US aid would have only a marginal impact on Pakistan's budget, foreign exchange receipts and overall economy. The piece concludes that Pakistan should not be unduly concerned about losing US official aid and should instead focus on broader bilateral economic ties.
