Earnings Effects Of Sexual Orientation Revisited: Evidence From The Cps, Clay Rehrig

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Objective. To measure the wage premium or penalty associated with sexual orientation of partnered lesbians and gays and to compare these estimates with those produced using smaller sample sizes and alternative definitions of homosexuality.

Data Source and Sampling Methods. Data are drawn from the Current Population Survey, produced by the U.S. Census Bureau. Extracting household information from the out-going March rotation provides a sample of 37,000 households interviewed in the years 1995 and 2000. Only workers living with a partner are included in the analysis.

Study Design. Following the methodology used by Black et al. (2003), this study uses a …

Moral Emotion Regulation: The Case Of Abortion Attitudes, Steven Nydick May 2007

Moral Emotion Regulation: The Case Of Abortion Attitudes, Steven Nydick

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

With regard to moral judgments. Lawrence Kohlberg claimed that reason and logic lead to answers about right and wrong. By contrast, Jonathan Haidt proposed an “emotivist” theory of morality in which feelings take center stage. I tested Haidt’s theory of moral judgment by showing 59 college undergraduate participants an abortion video while instructing them to increase, decrease, or make no attempt to change their level of emotion during the video. I found that the video succeeded at both increasing negative emotions (particularly disgust) and changing abortion attitudes to a more pro-life stance. Furthermore, the moral views of participants asked to …

The Influence Of Hunger On Attitudes: Does It Go Beyond Foods?, Euiyoung Kate Min May 2007

The Influence Of Hunger On Attitudes: Does It Go Beyond Foods?, Euiyoung Kate Min

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of hunger on attitudes (self-reports and corresponding reaction times) toward foods and non-foods (people). Participants rated their attitudes toward pictures of foods and pictures of people (older and younger males and females) along several evaluative scales (global attitudes and attitudinal bases) while reaction times were recorded. This was done twice (once when hungry, once not), in sessions separated by one week. Consistent with previous research, hunger differentially impacted ratings of the information underlying attitudes. For example, for foods, ratings of negative affect information changed more as a function of hunger …

Temporary Shocks And Offshoring: The Role Of External Economies And Firm Heterogeneity, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan May 2007

Temporary Shocks And Offshoring: The Role Of External Economies And Firm Heterogeneity, Devashish Mitra, Priya Ranjan

Economics - All Scholarship

We construct a model of offshoring with externalities and firm heterogeneity. Due to the presence of externalities, temporary shocks like the Y2K problem can have permanent effects, i.e., they can permanently raise the extent of offshoring in an industry. Also, the initial advantage of a country as a potential host for outsourcing activities can create a lock in effect, whereby late movers have a comparative disadvantage. Furthermore, the existence of firm heterogeneity along with externalities can help explain the dynamic process of offshoring, where the most productive firms offshore first and the others follow later. Finally, we work out some …

Long-Term Unemployed Men: A Social Constructionist Exploration Of Identity Construction, Elizabeth A. Scott May 2007

Long-Term Unemployed Men: A Social Constructionist Exploration Of Identity Construction, Elizabeth A. Scott

Theses

Identity construction in long-term unemployed men over the age of thirty-five was explored using discursive psychological analysis (Wetherell, 2001). Forty participants in County Kerry, who had not engaged with statutory agencies providing employment rehabilitation services, were accessed over a three year period in order to identify the reasons for nonengagement. A grounded theory approach (Bryman, 2004) to data collection was utilised. This yielded six broad codes and eighteen categories of discursive resource drawn upon by the men in constructing identities. In explaining their continued absence from the workforce and lack of engagement with services, discourses identified by Levitas (2004) classifying …

A Lakota/Nakota/Dakota Model Of Oratory, Cheryl A. Long Feather May 2007

A Lakota/Nakota/Dakota Model Of Oratory, Cheryl A. Long Feather

Theses and Dissertations

Lakota/Nakota/Dakota people, as well as other Native American tribal groups, did not traditionally use the established, conventional forms of oration to which most in contemporary mainstream society relate. Rather, Native-specific epistemology, ontology and axiology played a central role in forming and supporting the function of communication as well as the speaking conventions that continue to be used today. These culturally-based patterns and structures present both challenges and opportunities that have been only marginally explored in various disciplines such as education, social and behavioral science, and psychology. This body of work exists for the purpose of exploring a traditionally Native understanding …

Seam Effects Changes Due To Modifications In Question Wording And Data Collection Strategies: A Comparison Of Conventional Questionnaire And Event History Calendar Seam Effects In The Psid, Mario Callegaro May 2007

Seam Effects Changes Due To Modifications In Question Wording And Data Collection Strategies: A Comparison Of Conventional Questionnaire And Event History Calendar Seam Effects In The Psid, Mario Callegaro

Survey Research and Methodology Program: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A seam effect occurs in panel studies when within-wave changes are less frequent than between-wave changes (comparing data gathered from two different interviews). This study explores the changes in the magnitude of seam effects among labor force states (employment, unemployment, not in labor force) using the last seven waves of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics collected between 1995 and 2005. The panel underwent several changes: data were collected with conventional questionnaires (CQ) until 2001. The interval between waves was changed from one year to two years in 1997. The data regarding labor force transitions were collected with Event History …

Emotions And Crime Over The Life Course: A Neo-Meadian Perspective On Criminal Continuity And Change, Peggy C. Giordano, Ryan D. Schroeder, Stephen A. Cernkovich May 2007

Emotions And Crime Over The Life Course: A Neo-Meadian Perspective On Criminal Continuity And Change, Peggy C. Giordano, Ryan D. Schroeder, Stephen A. Cernkovich

Sociology Faculty Publications

A symbolic interactionist perspective on the emotions is presented that highlights their social character, forges links to cognitive processes, and suggests ways in which emotions influence long-term patterns of criminal involvement. This neo-Meadian perspective contrasts with theories of desistance that focus on the role of informal social controls and develops the view of an emotional self that flourishes somewhat independent of the major role transitions typically emphasized in sociological studies of the life course. The authors also explore ways in which attention to the emotional realms of experience adds to traditional treatments of the impact of adult transition events ( …

For The Greater Good Or Greed? Redistributing Private Space Through Eminent Domain Power: Relocating The Dallas Cowboys Stadium To Arlington, Texas, Kim Probasco May 2007

For The Greater Good Or Greed? Redistributing Private Space Through Eminent Domain Power: Relocating The Dallas Cowboys Stadium To Arlington, Texas, Kim Probasco

Public Affairs Theses - Archive

The use of eminent domain power to take private land for private use continues to grow in the United States. Many American people lost their homes or businesses to city and council driven economic development in low-income neighborhoods. This paper seeks to explore the social implications that eminent domain power has on residents and examines power that is used by cities and councils to create economic development through the taking of land in low-income communities. I explore these issues through a case study of the Dallas Cowboys Stadium relocation to Arlington, Texas utilizing discourse analysis. I use Henri Lefebvre's conceptual …

Student Attitudes And Shame Dynamics Before And After A Bullying Prevention Program, Anne M. Manees

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

In light of school violence, bullying has been exposed as an important factor in student well-being and safety. This study investigated changes in shame dynamics and student attitudes related to bullying before and after students participated in a bullying prevention program offered at an elementary school. Students from four, third-grade classrooms (n = 118) participated in curriculum from Steps to Respect, a bullying prevention program. Students were administered questionnaires measuring perceptions and attitudes related to bullying at school and cards from the Thurston-Cradock Test of Shame (TCT) , a projective test designed to assess shame dynamics, and rated by teachers …

Concurrent Validity Bridging The Gap Between A Questionnaire Of Everyday Memory And A Formal Test Of Memory, Benjamin Kessler May 2007

Concurrent Validity Bridging The Gap Between A Questionnaire Of Everyday Memory And A Formal Test Of Memory, Benjamin Kessler

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The purpose of this study is to examine how concurrently valid a questionnaire of everyday memory is with several formal tests of memory. Memory questionnaire development was at an all time high in the late 1970's and early 1980's. During the mid 1980's there was an absence of interest in memory questionnaires as is evidenced by an absence of the topic in the literature. The questionnaires developed in the late 1970's and early 1980's yielded such varying results that it calls into question the reliability of both the memory questionnaires and the results of the studies that utilized them. A …

Manager Retention And The Steamboat Ski Resort, Michael D. Gumbiner May 2007

Manager Retention And The Steamboat Ski Resort, Michael D. Gumbiner

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The material for this paper centers on the Steamboat Ski Resort Corp. The ski resort was chosen for this study because of its need for a management retention plan. Steamboat was ranked as a top 10 international ski resort in North America by Snow Country Magazine (“Top 50 ski resorts,” 1997). It has maintained this distinction for many years. It has been noted for its idealistic “champion power” and its unpopulated vast terrain. In particular, it has always scored high in the customer experience categories for exceptional down-home friendly people. A chart, prepared by Net promoters.com, on customer and employee …

Does Teaching Problem-Solving Skills Matter?: An Evaluation Of Problem-Solving Skills Training For The Treatment Of Social And Behavioral Problems In Children, Bryan B. Bushman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parent training combined with problem solving skills training has been proposed as a comprehensive treatment for childhood oppositional behaviors, poor child social skills, and parental stress. The current study compared Parent Training + Problem Solving Skills Training with a Parent Training + nondirective condition. Parents of 32 children first attended Parent Training. After the parents completed Parent Training, children were randomly assigned to individual therapy in either a Problem Solving Skills Training condition or a nondirective condition. Data comparisons between the groups were made at postindividual therapy and at 6-week follow-up. Results indicated that children in the Problem Solving Skills …

Psychosocial Variables And Their Relationship To Diabetic Outcome Among The Strong Heart Study Cohort, Brian D. O'Leary May 2007

Psychosocial Variables And Their Relationship To Diabetic Outcome Among The Strong Heart Study Cohort, Brian D. O'Leary

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United Sates. Certain Native American groups have been harder hit than the mainstream population, both in prevalence of the disease and in rates of related complications. The highest known prevalence in the world is found among a Southwestern U.S. Tribe, and other Native American Tribes have demonstrated similar prevalence rates. It has been shown that certain psychological factors such as depression and hostility impact both the occurrence and outcome of certain diseases, including diabetes.

This study examined whether those individuals who have not met the criteria …

The Temporal Relationship Between Environmental Factors And Psychological Symptoms In Native American Adolescents, Georgia Lee Matt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Native American youth often experience high rates of environmental risk factors that may put them at increased risk for developing psychological problems, yet research within this high-risk population is severely limited.

The present study was designed to provide information on the rate of psychological symptoms in a sample of Native American youth, and evaluate the impact of environmental factors (risk, protective, and cultural) on psychological disorder symptoms over time. Data were collected with a sample of Native American youth using the Youth Self Report, the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory–Adolescent 2, and a researcher-designed Biodemographic Questionnaire.

Findings indicate that clinically …

An Examination Of The Structure Of Affect In A Sample Of Inpatient Adolescents, Marietta A. Veeder

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Multiple studies investigating the validity of the tripartite model of affect in youth have been supportive of the model; however, few studies have examined the model in narrow age bands or large clinical samples. The current study examined the structure of affect in a sample of psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents. Structural equation modeling was used to examine two-factor (negative affectivity [NA] and positive affectivity [PA]) and three-factor models (NA, PA, and physiological hyperarousal [PH]) with item level data from the Reynolds Adolescent Depression Scale (RADS) and Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), and from the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI), RADS, …
