Free Land!, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel May 2007

Free Land!, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel

Cornhusker Economics

Yes, that was the slogan used with the Homestead Act of 1862. But it has now taken on a slightly different meaning. The phrase “free land” today means free residential lots available to anyone pledging to build a new home in selected communities. As an incentive to entice new residents to repopulate areas of the Great Plains, this is a new and intriguing strategy.

We believe that the time is ripe to present an integrated view of cetacean brains, behavior, and evolution based on the wealth of accumulated and recent data on these topics. Our conclusions support the more generally accepted view that the large brain of cetaceans evolved to support complex cognitive abilities.

Private Sector Whistleblowers: Are There Sufficient Protections?, Richard E. Moberly May 2007

Private Sector Whistleblowers: Are There Sufficient Protections?, Richard E. Moberly

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

In response to the question this hearing presents, my research indicates that whistleblowers have some legal protection, but the protection is likely insufficient. Over 30 Federal statutes protect whistleblowers and relate to a variety of topics, including workplace safety, the environment, public health, and corporate fraud. However, these statutes provide only a relatively limited amount of protection because of their ad hoc and narrow approaches. Rather than protect any employee who reports any illegal activity, Federal statutes only protect whistleblowing related to a specific topic or statute, and then only if the whistleblower works for an employer covered by the …

Employee Resource Groups: A Proposed Model For Employee And Employer Success, Anna Christine Ronovde May 2007

Employee Resource Groups: A Proposed Model For Employee And Employer Success, Anna Christine Ronovde

Theses and Graduate Projects

Many Fortune 100 companies have established employee resource groups in recent years as a diversity and human resources initiative. Because these groups are designed to provide support and mentoring opportunities for women and minority employees, they are often part of an organization's diversity program. Thus, workplace diversity and mentoring programs were a main focus of my research. A deeper understanding of these groups and what potential benefits they can offer are needed in order to ensure they are as effective and successful as possible. I found that employee resource groups can be a highly beneficial addition to an organization, positively …

The Disincentive Of E-Only, Alice Keller May 2007

The Disincentive Of E-Only, Alice Keller

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper outlines the issues libraries face as they consider the transition from print (or hybrid) to electronic-only for journal literature. Although many library managers – in particular in the STM area – are keen to move as swiftly as possible to e-only, there is a series of drawbacks and problems which need to be addressed. This paper uses the three headings of Space, Costs and Availability to explore and discuss these issues. Even though there are many advantages in moving to e-only, there are also many disadvantages which make it more difficult to promote and can lead to serious …

Bowie Kuhn, Richard C. Crepeau May 2007

Bowie Kuhn, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Bowie Kuhn once said that he wanted to be remembered as the Baseball Commissioner who presided over a time of tremendous growth in the popularity of the game, and a time when no one questioned the integrity of the game. I read these words over and over again a few weeks ago in many of the obituaries published at the time of the former Commissioner's death. I cannot say that this is how I will remember him, and I do not know how history will remember him.

A Potential Pollen Proxy For Enso Derived From The Sajama Ice Core, Kam-Biu Liu, Carl A. Reese, Lonnie G. Thompson

Faculty Publications

An annually resolved pollen record spanning a 39-year period ( 1958 - 1996) from the Sajama Ice Cap, located on the western Bolivian Altiplano, reveals significant interannual variations in both pollen concentration and composition. The pollen assemblages within the annual layers are dominated by typical Altiplano taxa, especially Poaceae and Asteraceae. On an annual basis the pollen concentrations are strongly negatively correlated (Pearson's r = - 0.716) with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI). Studies from Sajama and other tropical ice caps have shown that during El Nino years, the weather on the Altiplano is decidedly warmer and drier, which enhances …

Evaluation Of The Impact Of The New Jersey Access Initiative Mentorship Program On Drug Using Behavior In Clients With Opiate Dependence, Jennifer Ingegneri

Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between mentoring services and reported illicit drug using behavior for opiate-dependent individuals. Data used in this study were part of a larger project by New Jersey Access Initiative (NJAI). Participants were 2,424 individuals were addicted to opiates. Results indicated that none of the participants reported receiving mentoring services. In addition, large amounts of incomplete and missing data in the dataset made statistical analyses impossible. Instead, descriptive results on drug usage, living conditions, education, employment, and social support are described. Implications regarding how mentoring services could have impacted participants' drug use are also …

The report, Transformation and Taking Stock: A Summary of Selected Findings from the McCormack Graduate School Diversity Survey, included a comprehensive look at race relations in the Commonwealth at a time of significant transition—demographically and politically. This report was followed by A Benchmark Report on Diversity in State and Local Government, which focused on the percentage of positions filled …

Stanford-Binet Profile Differences Between Normative Children And Those With Learning Disabilities Or Adhd, Seth Michael Tippin May 2007

Stanford-Binet Profile Differences Between Normative Children And Those With Learning Disabilities Or Adhd, Seth Michael Tippin

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The prevalence of learning disorders (LD) and attention-deficit disorders (ADHD) in school-aged children has received a great deal of interest for decades. The history, defining characteristics and methods of assessment remain relevant as many school-aged children continue to receive these diagnoses. The assessment of LD and ADHD can be a difficult and time-consuming process which involves numerous testing instruments and clinical interviews. Both diagnoses typically require intelligence testing, achievement testing, personality assessment and behavioral or syndrome specific testing. The current study sought to develop subtest profiles for the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, Fifth Edition that would serve to streamline the assessment …

City Of Las Vegas Municipal Court House Arrest Program Evaluation, Karen Coyne, Michele Hornstein, Timothy Shattler May 2007

City Of Las Vegas Municipal Court House Arrest Program Evaluation, Karen Coyne, Michele Hornstein, Timothy Shattler

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The City of Las Vegas operates a municipal detention facility, primarily housing offenders who have committed misdemeanor crimes within the 130 square miles of the Las Vegas City limits. Similar to many jurisdictions, within the State of Nevada, but also across the Country, the offender population is on the rise. The City’s inmate population has grown steadily at a rate of 10%, annually, for five years. This trend, when calculated as a future projection, suggests the City must be prepared for the misdemeanant population to swell from its current daily average of 1144 to more than 3000 inmates by the …

Mandating Hpv Vaccination--Private Rights, Public Good, Alexandra M. Stewart May 2007

Mandating Hpv Vaccination--Private Rights, Public Good, Alexandra M. Stewart

Health Policy and Management Informal Communications

New York State's regulations require health care workers who have direct contact with patients or who may expose patients to disease to be vaccinated against seasonal and H1N1 influenza. Courts must take into account constitutional guarantees of personal autonomy, freedom of contract, and freedom of religion when reviewing the current lawsuits. These rights, however, have been constrained when they conflict with government measures that are intended to protect the community's health and safety. Health care workers have a profound effect on patients' health. Although they have the same rights as all private citizens, it is likely that courts will continue …
