Diablo Canyon Archaeology: Prehistoric Hunting Along California Coast, Terry L. Jones
Diablo Canyon Archaeology: Prehistoric Hunting Along California Coast, Terry L. Jones
Social Sciences
Anthropologist Terry Jones of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has evidence suggesting prehistoric human hunters drove a flightless duck to extinction about 4,000 years ago. His theory is based on a 10,000-year history of shell and bone refuse, and other remnants of human settlement, excavated in the 1960s during the construction of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in San Luis Obispo County. The refuse is part of what archeologists call a “kitchen midden”–a trash heap showing what people hunted and ate. The Chumash Indians are among the modern descendants of the coastal dwellers represented at the site.

Changing Learning, Changing Roles: Collaboration At Every Angle, Patricia A. Iannuzzi
Library Faculty Presentations
When I look out into this audience I see a room of campus leaders – by the very nature of our professional expertise and training. I see generalists who think broadly about student learning – who see the connections between disciplines as well as between research and teaching – and between learning that happens within the classroom and external to it. I see organized, articulate, service oriented professionals who know how to facilitate – who are committed to group process – who are task oriented – product driven – and creative. I see strong collaborators – that’s why I want …

Who Moved My Desk? The Future Reference Platforms, Anamika Dasgupta, Steven Ovadia
Faculty and Staff Publications
New communication platforms such as Wikis, Bots, MySpace, Webex, Podcasts, Text-to-speech programs and community-based reference sites offer a means to share information in different formats, supporting specific learning styles, and instruction environments. The effectiveness of these communication platforms in providing reference services depends on many factors: the nature of information being shared, the attitudes of the information seeker and sharer, and the environment and context in which the information is being shared. This presentation will include an introduction and overview of these communication platforms.

The Expectancy-Value Theory Of Achievement Motivation And The Enumeration Of Possible Selves: Evidence For Outcomes During Emerging Adulthood, Janet M. Roberts
The Expectancy-Value Theory Of Achievement Motivation And The Enumeration Of Possible Selves: Evidence For Outcomes During Emerging Adulthood, Janet M. Roberts
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The expectancy-value theory of achievement motivation (Eccles, Adler, Futterman, Goff, Kaczala, et al., 1983; Wigfield & Eccles, 2000) posits that an “individual’s choice, persistence, and performance can be explained by their beliefs about how well they will do on the activity and the extent to which they value the activity” (Wigfield & Eccles, 2000, p. 68). Related research has focused on the enumeration of possible selves and how one’s hoped-for and feared possible selves (Markus & Nurius, 1986) influence motivation and engagement in activities related to goal choices. Most studies of motivation and achievement have focused on children and adolescents …

Accounting For Taiwan Gdp Growth: Parametric And Nonparametric Estimates, Ling Sun, Lilyan Fulginiti
Accounting For Taiwan Gdp Growth: Parametric And Nonparametric Estimates, Ling Sun, Lilyan Fulginiti
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of changes in prices of tradables on economic growth in a highly open economy, Taiwan. We do so by measuring productivity growth with both index number and parametric approaches, and identifying the sources of output growth using a methodology that allows the impacts of changes in the terms of trade to be accounted for. The results show that Taiwan’s economic growth depends on inputs accumulation as well as technical progress with the terms-of-trade effect being negligible.

Prudential Arrangements For Stability And Development Of Islamic Finance, Ishrat Husain Dr.
Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse
Prudential regulations, supervisory mechanisms, monitoring and enforcement arrangements are as important to Islamic finance industry as they are to the rest of the financial industry. The only distinction is that the institutional arrangements governing Islamic finance are to be derived from the specific nature and characteristics of Islamic financial institutions, Islamic financial markets, Islamic financial instruments, Islamic banking laws and the Islamic financial infrastructure. This paper based on a cross country comparison of seven countries which account for most of the Islamic finance activities in the national jurisdictions attempts to highlight the question of adequacy of these institutional arrangements, pleads …
