Detecting Agency From The Biological Motion Of Veridical Vs Animated Agents, Raymond A. Mar, William M. Kelley, Todd F. Heatherton, C. Neil Macrae May 2007

Detecting Agency From The Biological Motion Of Veridical Vs Animated Agents, Raymond A. Mar, William M. Kelley, Todd F. Heatherton, C. Neil Macrae

Dartmouth Scholarship

The ability to detect agency is fundamental for understanding the social world. Underlying this capacity are neural circuits that respond to patterns of intentional biological motion in the superior temporal sulcus and temporoparietal junction. Here we show that the brain's blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) response to such motion is modulated by the representation of the actor. Dynamic social interactions were portrayed by either live-action agents or computer-animated agents, enacting the exact same patterns of biological motion. Using an event-related design, we found that the BOLD response associated with the perception and interpretation of agency was greater when identical physical …

Exploring Strategies For Integrated Information Literacy: From "Academic Champions" To Institution-Wide Change, Claire Mcguinness May 2007

Exploring Strategies For Integrated Information Literacy: From "Academic Champions" To Institution-Wide Change, Claire Mcguinness

Communications in Information Literacy

In this paper, the author critically reviews the strategies that have been adopted by librarians to secure academic support for curriculum-integrated information literacy (IL) instruction, and questions whether the popular approach of targeting individual academics offers a suitable foundation for the establishment of long-term IL programs. The paper suggests that librarians should instead align their IL objectives with the overall academic mission of their institutions and seek out the means to effect a more wide-ranging change in the academic culture, where IL is recognized as a core educational value. Several strategies are suggested by which this aim may be achieved.

Estimating The Cardinality Of Rdf Graph Patterns, Angela Maduko, Kemafor Anyanwu, Amit P. Sheth, Paul Schliekelman May 2007

Estimating The Cardinality Of Rdf Graph Patterns, Angela Maduko, Kemafor Anyanwu, Amit P. Sheth, Paul Schliekelman

Kno.e.sis Publications

Most RDF query languages allow for graph structure search through a conjunction of triples which is typically processed using join operations. A key factor in optimizing joins is determining the join order which depends on the expected cardinality of intermediate results. This work proposes a pattern-based summarization framework for estimating the cardinality of RDF graph patterns. We present experiments on real world and synthetic datasets which confirm the feasibility of our approach.

Breaking The Law! Conditions For And Perception Of Civil Disobedience By Democratic Citizens, Adam Stanley May 2007

Breaking The Law! Conditions For And Perception Of Civil Disobedience By Democratic Citizens, Adam Stanley

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This paper examines actions of civil disobedience and the laws relevant to those actions. Each case study was tested against an operational definition of civil disobedience to see if these actions could be considered a legitimate expression of civil disobedience. The legitimacy of the laws was assessed through the use of two competing legal philosophies of H. L. A. Hart and Ronald Dworkin. Then, the public’s opinion of civil disobedience was measured through the use of polls and survey data. The results showed that the three cases did follow the guidelines of civil disobedience established by the literature, but the …

Financial Liberalization And Money Demand In Mauritius, Rebecca Hodel

Master's Theses - Economics

2 Financial Liberalization and Money Demand in Mauritius Abstract The Bank of Mauritius is considering moving to a formal inflation-targeting framework, which will require, among other things, a better understanding of the monetary policy transmission mechanism. This paper will contribute to this understanding by testing the stability of the money demand function for both M1 and M2 in Mauritius using annual data for the period 1967 to 2005. The Durbin h test and Chow test for structural stability are employed to ascertain whether the current policy framework satisfies the necessary condition for effectiveness. The results demonstrate a stable money demand …
