Reflecting on her involvement in the development of service-learning for American higher education, Professor Permaul has learned that service-learning, when practiced serves society, the learner and the educational institution extremely well. She finds that service-learning as a pedagogy is very compatible with most learning and developmental theories. She further finds that service-learning is a powerful instructional tool, while fulfilling many social challenges and needs.

Fighting Traffic Congestion In Metropolitan Phoenix By Making Public Transportation A Success, David Frias
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
The past two years in the Critical and Creative Thinking Graduate Program have been a time of learning and life changing experiences. I found the confidence to make a career change and gained the knowledge and tools necessary to study the complex problem of traffic congestion and attempt to solve it by utilizing public transportation. My plan to move to Phoenix, Arizona in 2009 motivated me not only to learn about the area and its attempts to fight urban sprawl and traffic congestion, but also to attempt to find solutions to these problems. I utilized creative thinking and critical thinking …

Data were gathered to determine what services were being provided and areas for improvement, Information was gathered from HIV case management survey providers and the Minnesota Department of Human Services HIV/AIDS Division. Fitting Disposition Codes To Mobile Phone Surveys: Experiences From Studies In Finland, Slovenia And The Usa, Mario Callegaro, Charlotte Steeh, Trent D. Buskirk, Vasja Vehovar, Vesa Kuusela, Linda Piekarski
UNL-Gallup Working Papers Series
Using mobile phones to conduct survey interviews has gathered momentum recently. However, using mobile telephones in surveys poses many new challenges. One important challenge involves properly classifying final case dispositions to understand response rates and non-response error and to implement responsive survey designs. Both purposes demand accurate assessments of the outcomes of individual call attempts. By looking at actual practices across three countries, we suggest how the disposition codes of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, which have been developed for telephone surveys, can be modified to fit mobile phones. Adding an international dimension to these standard definitions will …

Consumers nationally, and even globally, continue to embrace e-commerce technology. Since 2001, ecommerce retail sales climbed from $8.3 billion to $31.5 billion in the first quarter of 2007, which is an annual growth rate of more than 27 percent. Although this figure accounts for only 3.1 percent of all 2007 first quarter retail sales, the e-commerce rate is on a continuous rise (U.S. Census Bureau News, May 16, 2007). Additionally, projections see an annual growth rate of at least 19 percent in the near future.

Active Recreation In Parks: Can Park Design And Facilities Promote Use And Physical Activity?, Lynnette Renee Weigand
Dissertations and Theses
Current research is examining the link between the built environment and regular physical activity to improve public health. As communities become denser and individual lots become smaller, locally accessible parks will assume more importance as places to promote physical activity and individual health outcomes.
To determine if park design and facilities can promote use and physical activity, I examined five neighborhood parks in three newer developments near Portland, Oregon (Fairview Village, Sunnyside Village and Orenco Station). I used a multi-method research approach that included interviews with relevant public agencies and developers, field inventories of the parks and surrounding context, observations …

A recent count of American annual deaths caused by firearms, gangs, domestic violence, child abuse and drugs rate higher than all the victims of all wars fought since the Revolutionary War to the present, also a self-inflicted war of choice in Iraq. In other words, we are a nation killing ourselves by tragedies of our own making. What can you do to avert such tragedy in your family? Destroy (not sell) the firearms you have, seek counseling to resolve anger and violence in your family, cure your substance abuse addictions, and live a healthy life to the fullest with your …
The Use Of Verbal And Written Emotional Expression For Empowerment And Healing In Clinical Social Work Practice, Laurie Lynn Dix Schmit
The Use Of Verbal And Written Emotional Expression For Empowerment And Healing In Clinical Social Work Practice, Laurie Lynn Dix Schmit
Masters Theses
Social work practice often demonstrates ambivalence about emotions and emotional expression. Forced by managed care to keep clinical work short-term, and having removed the depth of psychoanalytic and other psychodynamic approaches, social workers have retreated from attending to the emotional life of clients, and now focus mainly in the realm of thoughts and behaviors. By integrating literature from other disciplines with social work, and incorporating contemporary thought on the topic, this paper addresses the importance, challenges and rewards of utilizing emotional expression in clinical social work practice. We find that, by addressing the emotions of our clients, we begin to …

This research examined the relationship between eating attitudes and body image dissatisfaction using the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ). Three cohorts of almost 2,000 undergraduate females from Brigham Young University were given the EAT and BSQ twice a year for two to four years, depending upon their year of entrance to BYU. The data collected were analyzed using correlational statistics. Results indicated that a high positive correlation between the EAT and BSQ existed across semesters and cohorts.

The Selected Works of Dan Kipnis
To determine what services and programs of national library associations are most valuable to newer librarians. As young librarians enter the workforce, many are deciding whether or not to join and become involved with library associations such as SLA, MLA, and their regional chapters. What they decide will become increasingly important to library associations as the traditional member base reaches retirement age. To determine what might attract younger librarians, a survey was emailed to various listservs to ascertain what services are considered most valuable.
