Competition between microfinance institutions (MFIs) in developing countries has increased dramatically in the last decade. We model the behavior of non-profit lenders, and show that their non-standard, client-maximizing objectives cause them to cross-subsidize within their pool of borrowers. Thus when competition eliminates rents on profitable borrowers, it is likely to yield a new equilibrium in which poor borrowers are worse off. As competition exacerbates asymmetric information problems over borrower indebtedness, the most impatient borrowers begin to obtain multiple loans, creating a negative externality that leads to less favorable equilibrium loan contracts for all borrowers.

It surrounds our everyday life in a ubiquitous and pervasive way-physical power, solar power, social power, spiritual power, and so on. It elicits impressions of greatness and grandeur, strength and stamina, energy and engagement. It evokes ideas like force, control, persuasion, authority, influence, impact, and charisma.

This paper demonstrates the value of Adventure Based Counseling (ABC) combined with couples and family counseling. The growth of ABC has gone through powerful changes from starting out with patients in a hospital to now being utilized in individual, group, couples, and family therapy. Looking at some main theoretical methods in the counseling field the totality of ABC is identified and combined with couple and family therapeutic goals. The importance of couple and family interaction has been diminished in our culture and the evolvement of ABC within those structures leads to a more productive family system.

Small-Scale Biodiesel Production: A Feasibility Study, Isabel Call

The objective of the research presented in this paper is the development of cost curves for small-scale biodiesel production and a comparison of relevant technologies. The three technologies considered are the biodiesel pilot plant at the Iowa Energy Center's Biomass Energy Conversion Center, the commercially-sold Fuelmeister, and the bicycle-powered machine currently under development by students at Oberlin College. The price of biodiesel at which production via these technologies becomes profitable and the relative profitability of each will be determined through the use of a linear program. Thirteen-Hundred-Year-Old Bead Adornments From Baar, Canton Zug, Switzerland, Katharina Müller

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

In the year 2000, an Early Medieval (7th-century) cemetery containing more than 200 burials with rich grave goods was discovered in Baar, Canton Zug, Switzerland. Thanks to the painstaking methods used in the excavation and recording of the 2,985 glass, amber, coral, and amethyst beads found with the female burials, it was possible to reconstruct the necklaces and sewn-on appliqués they were part of. Comparisons with mosaic depictions of famous women—such as the Empress Theodora in San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy—suggest that the people of Baar imitated southern Alpine Byzantine bead jewelry fashion.

Objective: Extensive use of specific social contexts (bars and parties, for instance) by homosexuals and bisexuals is thought to be a factor in the higher rates of drinking among these groups. However, much of the empirical evidence behind these assumptions has been based on studies with methodological or sampling shortcomings. This article examines the epidemiological patterns of alcohol contexts in relation to sexual identity, using a large, national, probability population survey. No Business Like Show Business: Tracking Commodification Over A Century Of Variety, Scott B. Fosdick

This baseline survey of 517 executives examined relationship management within business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce. Companies that employed B2B e-commerce evidenced communication and public relations tenets of relationship management. They allowed consumers to order and pay online, to access online support, to contact the company or sales staff, and to get product information. Engendering loyalty, by tracking customer satisfaction, was weak. Commitment to B2B e-customers was high, evidenced through personnel dedicated to B2B e-commerce and stated organizational commitment.

The Omaha Conditions Survey: 2004 was conducted through telephone interviews with adults from a random sample of Omaha-area households. The sample was drawn from households in the Nebraska portion of the Omaha Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, Washington, and Saunders Counties comprise the Nebraska portion of the Omaha MSA.

Cholinergic Basal Forebrain Involvement In The Acquisition Of Differential Reinforcement Of Low Rate Responding Tasks In Rats, Sean Ryan Corley

It was hypothesized that 192 IgG-saporin lesions of the basal forebrain cholinergic system (BFCS) would disrupt differential reinforcement of low rate (DRL) learning in an uncued DRL task, but would not impair acquisition and performance in the cued version of the task. Results suggest that BFCS lesions impair vigilance to the external cues despite continued practice in the cued DRL, whereas continuous attention to internally produced cues recovers with extended practice in the uncued DRL.
