Discussion: Narrow Money, Broad Money, And The Transmission Of Monetary Policy, Gregory Hess

Monetary policy and theory have been greatly transformed since Dale Henderson, Richard Porter, and Peter Tinsley (HPT) first crossed the Board's threshold more than thirty years ago. Judging from the sustained levels of robust growth and moderate rates of inflation in the United States since the early 1980s, both theory and policy have moved in a welfare-improving direction. The dramatic evolution of monetary policy during HPT's tenure simply cannot be overstated. A revolution took place during their watch, and as the custodians and facilitators of research at the Federal Reserve Board, these three amigos should certainly take some credit.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has become one of the most prevalent mental disorders over the last few years and its prevalence is still growing. The disorder is characterized by a wide variety of symptoms such as lack of social behavior, extreme withdrawal, and problems communicating. Because of the diversity in symptoms and the wide variety in severity for those, each autistic child has different needs and requires individualized therapy. This leads to long waiting lists for therapy.

This manuscript provides a therapeutic group model to address gender role conflict in males based on a narrative approach. The use of story telling and metaphor are central to the process because they are reflective of how men tend to communicate. This approach reflects a shift away from traditional counseling approach often seen as the antithesis of a masculine ideology. This process provides group members the opportunities to co-create and re-author socially constructed stories of masculinity and maleness that have taught males to abuse and neglect their bodies while at the same time not seek help. Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) clinically affects children and adolescents through the display of unwanted disruptive, hostile, defiant, and oppositional behaviors. Development of these can be linked to parental psychopathology, family and marital dysfunction, poor parent-child interaction, atypical parenting, maternal age, substance abuse, poor supervision, and inconsistent or harsh discipline. The effects of ODD lead to impaired social functioning, depression, low self-esteem, academic failure, substance abuse, delinquency, and family discord. Compared to other treatments ( e.g., medication, behavior modification, punishment, or removal from the home) the most effective course of treatment for ODD is the use of family therapy and parent …

Level Mapping Characterizations Of Selector-Generated Models For Logic Programs, Sibylle Schwarz, Pascal Hitzler

Assigning semantics to logic programs via selector generated models (Schwarz 2002/2003) extends several semantics, like the stable, the inflationary, and the stable generated semantics, to programs with arbitrary formulae in rule heads and bodies. We study this approach by means of a unifying framework for characterizing different logic programming semantics using level mappings (Hitzler and Wendt 200x, Hitzler 2003), thereby supporting the claim that this framework is very flexible and applicable to very diversely defined semantics.

Individual, Neighborhood, And Situational Factors Associated With Violent Victimization And Offending, Jerry K. Daday, Lisa M. Broidy, Cameron S. Crandall, David P. Sklar

The criminological literature presents substantial evidence that victims and offenders in violent crimes share demographic characteristics, engage in similar lifestyles and activities, and reside in socially disorganized neighborhoods. However, research has examined these relationships separately using either victimization or offending data, and prior studies have not examined these relationships by comparing victims and offenders within the same incidents. This limits the effect of examining whether these factors are associated with victimization and offending in similar or distinct ways. In order to assess flexibility in acquiring and using conflicting response rules, rats with selective lesions of the NBM or sham-lesion controls were subjected to serial reversal training in a simple operant discrimination paradigm. The NBM lesion group did not differ from the control group in acquisition of the original rules; the NBM lesion group required more time to master the changes in rules in the first reversal, but not in subsequent reversals.

Contends that poor discharge planning for elderly patients in American hospitals is the result of reduced lengths of stay which do not give medical social workers adequate time to assess patients' needs. A survey methodology was used to assess social service and community resource needs of hospitalized elderly patients and their family members at Riverside Community Hospital in California. Argues that the results of the survey can be used to improve discharge planning and lead to a more client-centered practice in hospitals.

Student employees (N=86) at a major research institution participated in a new hire orientation training and then responded to questionnaires measuring ten transfer behaviors and eight work environment constructs measuring support, frequency of contact, cohesion, and general means efficacy.
