K’Oando: La Mesa Urbana En Cochabamba, Erin Hatheway
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Striking Out? The Economic Impact Of Major League Baseball Work Stoppages On Host, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade
Striking Out? The Economic Impact Of Major League Baseball Work Stoppages On Host, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade
Economics Department Working Papers
Major League Baseball teams have used the lure of economic riches as an incentive for cities to construct new stadiums at considerable public expense. Estimates of the economic impact of a MLB on host communities have typically been in the vicinity of $300 million. Our analysis suggest these numbers are wildly inflated. Using the baseball strikes of 1981, 1994, and 1995 as test cases, we find the net economic impact for a MLB team on a host city of $16.2 million under one model and $132.3 million under a second model.

Sleep Habits And Patterns Of College Students And Their Relationship To Selected Personality Characteristics, Steve M. Jenkins
Sleep Habits And Patterns Of College Students And Their Relationship To Selected Personality Characteristics, Steve M. Jenkins
Doctoral Dissertations
College is a time of adjustment when many students have a newfound responsibility for many aspects of their lives, including sleep habits and patterns. College students often have sleep schedules that vary greatly, which can result in sleep disturbances. Previous research indicates that college students report significantly more sleep disturbances than the general population. Poor sleep quality has been linked to myriad psychological, physiological, and cognitive difficulties, including mood and anxiety disorders, cardiovascular disease, and poor academic performance. Oftentimes, sleep disturbances can be corrected with basic psychological interventions. Considering the deleterious effects that poor sleep can have on college students, …

Hurt, Perfectly: Artist’S Statement On The Documentary Film, Sam René Garcia
McNair Scholars Research Journal
“Hurt, Perfectly” is a documentary video providing an historical and feminist analysis of the attitudes, histories and laws regarding domestic violence in the state of Idaho. Through a series of interviews and imagery, the video explores domestic violence, presenting it as a responsibility of every community member and simultaneously revealing how every citizen in the community is a victim of domestic violence. The video explores the case of Angie Leon in the context of two Idaho counties—Ada and Canyon. By juxtaposing the neighboring regions, the video attempts to debunk socioeconomic and racial associations and stereotypes commonly attached to domestic violence. …

Target Markets For Grain And Cotton Marketing Consultants And Market Information Systems, Oscar Vergara, Keith H. Coble, Darren Hudson, George F. Patrick, Thomas O. Knight, Alan Baquet
Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications
This paper examines the use of market consultants and market information systems by grain and cotton producers. A model of producer demand for marketing information and consultants is proposed that decomposes price received into exogenous and endogenous components. The analysis is based on a survey of over 1,600 producers. The results suggest that expenditures on market information systems and market consultants are not independent and, more specifically, expenditures on marketing consultants substitute for expenditures on market information systems.

Remittances, Savings And Relative Rates Of Return, Michael A. Quinn
Economics Faculty Publications
This paper presents a model of migrant behavior in which remittances are treated as both a consumption transfer to households and as an alternative savings mechanism for migrants. This approach leads to the implication that migrants ' remittances/savings behavior should be affected by the relative rate of return on their savings and on the savings of their remittance receiving households. Statistical support for this hypothesis is found using data from Mexican workers in the United States. The paper finds this evidence using selectivity corrective remittance and savings equations. These results hold when the equations are estimated separately or jointly . …

The State Of Housing For Hispanics In The United States, Carlos Vargas-Ramos
The State Of Housing For Hispanics In The United States, Carlos Vargas-Ramos
Policy Documents
The picture painted in this brief is mixed. On the one hand, Latinos lag significantly behind the aggregate of the US population in positive housing indicators and are overrepresented in the categories of negative housing indicators, and they do so for 2003 as they did in 2001, 1999 and 1997. On the other hand, over this period there has been some progress in some areas of concern; but this progress has not been necessarily consistent. This policy paper includes recommendations to improve housing for latinos.
Guestworkers And Exploitation, Robert Mayer
Guestworkers And Exploitation, Robert Mayer
Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Are guestworker programs exploitative? Egalitarian and neoclassical theories of exploitation agree that they always are. But these judgments are too indiscriminate. Privileged guests are the exception, and the exception points toward a more sensitive standard for identifying exploitation. This more sensitive standard, the sufficiency theory of exploitation, is used to analyze several guestworker programs. Even when guestworker programs are exploitative, it is argued that the unfairness should be tolerated if the exploitation is modest, not severe, and if the most likely nonexploitative alternative worsens the plight of the disadvantaged.

An Investigation Of Reactance, Coping, Quality Of Life, And Well -Being, Monique Maria Matherne
An Investigation Of Reactance, Coping, Quality Of Life, And Well -Being, Monique Maria Matherne
Doctoral Dissertations
Psychological reactance (reactance) is a personality variable receiving a great deal of attention. Reactance has been defined as the motivational force aroused in an individual when a behavioral freedom is lost or threatened (Brehm, 1966). The current study assessed the interrelationships among psychological reactance, coping, quality of life, and well-being. A total of 353 participants were analyzed for this study. Participants completed four self-report instruments: (1) the Therapeutic Reactance Scale, (2) the Coping Styles Questionnaire, (3) the Overall Quality of Life Scale, (4) the General Well-Being Schedule, and a demographics questionnaire. Significant gender differences existed for reactance, detachment coping, emotional …
