Movers And Shakers: A Qualitative Investigation On The Role Of Policy Entrepreneurs, Jeni Jenkins Apr 2005

Movers And Shakers: A Qualitative Investigation On The Role Of Policy Entrepreneurs, Jeni Jenkins

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Using the theoretical concept of ‘policy entrepreneurs’ in public policy, this study draws on interview data from six key figures in a controversial city debate, to examine the impact, role, and characteristics such entrepreneurs have in policy making in city politics. This paper begins by providing an overview of public problems and the concept of policy entrepreneurs in relation to their role in the agenda setting process of policy formation. A historical summary of the case in study is then provided. Research is based on an in-depth analysis of data collected during one-on-one oral interviews in August 2004 with six …

El Papel Del Café En La Economía De Nicaragua: Desafíos, Estrategias, Y El Futuro, Matt Shuman Apr 2005

El Papel Del Café En La Economía De Nicaragua: Desafíos, Estrategias, Y El Futuro, Matt Shuman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Me llamo Anna Lifson.

Assessment Of Ecuadorian Viewpoints Concerning The Gutiérrez Administration And Current Political Issues, Alissa Barrett

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

During a period of eight days, surveys addressing the Gutiérrez administration and several current political issues were conducted and personal observations were made in the two Ecuadorian cities of Quito and Guayaquil, representing the Sierra and Coastal regions, respectively. It was found that the majority (61%) was not in agreement with Gutiérrez’s government while he was president, and the same percentage was also in agreement with his departure from office.

¿Qué Mas?: Una Mirada A Las Posibilidades De Un “Instrumento Político.”, Rebecca Bor Apr 2005

¿Qué Mas?: Una Mirada A Las Posibilidades De Un “Instrumento Político.”, Rebecca Bor

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Identities In Dialogue: Deconstructing The Dynamics Of Bošnjak-Muslim Identities In Novi Pazar, Christine M. Debacker Apr 2005

Identities In Dialogue: Deconstructing The Dynamics Of Bošnjak-Muslim Identities In Novi Pazar, Christine M. Debacker

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

My research was aimed at understanding how individual identify with larger, collective identities (national, ethnic, religious, etc.). In studying the history and current social situation of the former Yugoslavia countries, I learned that often individuals identify themselves within the terms of nation, ethnicity and religion. And I learned that often in this region those terms were used exchangeably. To better understand how differences among individuals and groups were conceived, I turned to the abounding academic theories written on the topics of nation, nationhood and nationalism.

In looking though the mass of theories, I realized that each academic creates theories of …

The Political Economy Of Giving: Legitimacy, Welfare, And The Influence Of Foreign Ngos In China, Nathan Wallace Apr 2005

The Political Economy Of Giving: Legitimacy, Welfare, And The Influence Of Foreign Ngos In China, Nathan Wallace

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since the death of Mao and the rise of reformers in China, the world has eagerly awaited the results of changes sweeping through the developing nation. Deng Xiaoping and his successors have promised reform, which has come in the form of market liberalization. Now, after 20 years of reform, the Chinese people have seen a boom of economic prosperity. Their nation has joined the WTO and taken a central role in the world economy. Reform has also reduced political oversight of people’s daily lives and allowed the economy and society to exist in a less regulated environment. That being said, …

Observed Incivility At Work And Job Outcomes: The Moderating Role Of Workgroup Characteristics, Catharine Tate

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate group identification and group cohesion as moderators of the relationship between observed incivility and job outcomes. Participants included 36 men and 54 women from a property management company who completed scales assessing observed incivility in their workgroup, feelings of workgroup cohesion and identification, and job related outcomes (e.g., job satisfaction, burnout, turnover intentions, and affective organizational commitment). Results showed that observing incivility at work was directly related to turnover intentions for employees. Results also showed that employees who perceived their workgroup as highly cohesive reported being less committed to the organization. Additionally, …

Operational Evaluation Test Of Mine Neutralization Systems, Ida, U.S. Humanitarian Demining Research And Development, Office Of The Assistant Secretary Of Defense Special Operations And Low-Intensity Conflict

Global CWD Repository

During the Fiscal Year 2003 Humanitarian Demining Research and Development Program Requirements Refinement Workshop, expert deminers expressed a need for a costbenefit and performance analysis for currently available deflagration (burning) and high-order (non-explosive binary mixture) mine neutralization systems, which carry fewer shipping restrictions compared with tradition explosives commonly used for mine neutralization. In response to this request, the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) Acquisition Center-Washington, D.C., published a Federal Business Opportunities (FBO) (formerly Commerce Business Daily) announcement (solicitation number W909MY-04-T0003) on 21 January 2004 on behalf of the Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Command (CERDEC), Night Vision and Electronic Sensors …

Geo-Rent: A Plea To Public Economists, Fred Foldvary Apr 2005

Geo-Rent: A Plea To Public Economists, Fred Foldvary

Faculty Publications

This paper presents an analysis of what is termed “geo-rent,” what the plot-devoid-of-improvements would rent for in an auction. Most of the public finance literature and current thought has disvalued and misunderstood the actual and potential role of land and its rent for public revenue. The qualities of land value that make it a superior source of revenue—having little or no deadweight loss, and capitalizing civic infrastructure and services—are recognized but compartmentalized, ignored in the broader policy discussions. That the “producer surplus” is in reality mostly land rent is little recognized. The “Henry George Theorem” that rent can optimally equal …

Coping With The Trauma Of War At Home And Abroad: The Case Of Bosnian Residents And Refugees In Idaho’S Treasure Valley, Sandina Begic Apr 2005

Coping With The Trauma Of War At Home And Abroad: The Case Of Bosnian Residents And Refugees In Idaho’S Treasure Valley, Sandina Begic

McNair Scholars Research Journal

It has been widely reported that exposure to war-related trauma leads to psychological difficulties in human beings, and it has been hypothesized that these psychological difficulties may be compounded when people leave their war-torn countries and begin their lives as refugees in a new country. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether members of the Treasure Valley’s Bosnian refugee population experience more symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression stemming from the 1992-1995 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina than do current Bosnian residents. The results indicated that local Bosnian refugees report more symptoms of PTSD than their …

Carbon Dioxide For Euthanasia: Concerns Regarding Pain And Distress, With Special Reference To Mice And Rats, Kathleen Conlee, Martin Stephens, Andrew N. Rowan, Lesley A. King Apr 2005

Carbon Dioxide For Euthanasia: Concerns Regarding Pain And Distress, With Special Reference To Mice And Rats, Kathleen Conlee, Martin Stephens, Andrew N. Rowan, Lesley A. King

Laboratory Experiments Collection

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most commonly used agent for euthanasia of laboratory rodents, used on an estimated tens of millions of laboratory rodents per year worldwide, yet there is a growing body of evidence indicating that exposure to CO2 causes more than momentary pain and distress in these and other animals. We reviewed the available literature on the use of CO2 for euthanasia (as well as anaesthesia) and also informally canvassed laboratory animal personnel for their opinions regarding this topic. Our review addresses key issues such as CO2 flow rate and final concentration, presence …

Reasonable Partiality And Animal Ethics, Bernard E. Rollin Apr 2005

Reasonable Partiality And Animal Ethics, Bernard E. Rollin

Attitudes Towards Animals Collection

Moral psychology is often ignored in ethical theory, making applied ethics difficult to achieve in practice. This is particularly true in the new field of animal ethics. One key feature of moral psychology is recognition of the moral primacy of those with whom we enjoy relationships of love and friendship -philia in Aristotle's term. Although a radically new ethic for animal treatment is emerging in society, its full expression is severely limited by our exploitative uses of animals. At this historical moment, only the animals with whom we enjoy philia - companion animals - can be treated with unrestricted moral …

Facts From Faeces: Prey Remains In Wolf, Canis Lupus, Faeces Revise Occurrence Records For Mammals Of British Columbia’S Coastal Archipelago, Michael H. H. Price, Chris T. Darimont, Neville N. Winchester, Paul C. Paquet

Biogeography and Ecological Opportunity Collection

Archipelagos often harbour taxa that are endemic and vulnerable to disturbance. Conservation planning and research for these areas depend fundamentally on accurate and current taxonomic inventories. Although basic ecological information is in its infancy, the temperate rainforest islands of coastal British Columbia are undergoing rapid human-caused modification, particularly logging. We report herein new mammal records for these islands as determined by prey remains in the faeces of Wolves (Canis lupus), the area’s apex mammalian terrestrial predator. Of particular interest is our detection of Marten (Martes americana) on islands previously inventoried and island occupancy by Moose (Alces alces), which have apparently …

Mom's Day Out: Investigating The Proximate Causes Of Allomothering In Squirrel Monkeys, Amber Wright Apr 2005

Mom's Day Out: Investigating The Proximate Causes Of Allomothering In Squirrel Monkeys, Amber Wright

Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses

Allomothering, which is defined as non-material infant care, is a behavior that is found among many animal species. Although it is widely acknowledged in primate species in particular, it is not well understood. Allomaternal behavior is well documented but the proximal causes are not known. Most primate species live in groups and have intense social relations which govern every aspect of their behavior. Allomothering could then be better understood by looking at the social relationships that exist between members of a group. This research tries to better understand what causes certain females to allomother over others by looking at the …

K’Oando: La Mesa Urbana En Cochabamba, Erin Hatheway Apr 2005

K’Oando: La Mesa Urbana En Cochabamba, Erin Hatheway

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
