The Interactive Roles Of Gender And Ethnicity In African-American Women's Mental Health, Dianna Nadine Moses-Nunley

Dissertations

Abstract For African-American women, female gender and African-American (AA) ethnicity combine to create experiences of discrimination, discrimination related stress, and mental health issues that are not encountered by individuals who occupy only one of these status variables. Maternal Age, Paternal Age And Effective Fecundability In Rural Bangladesh, Ek Brunson, Dj Holman, D. B. Neill

Social Sciences

Effective fecundability is defined as the monthly probability for a conception that leads to a livebirth. One method of assessing effective fecundability is by examining lengths of first birth intervals. Using demographic records of marriage and birth, we examine the effects of maternal age, paternal age, mother’s education, and religion on effective fecundability in a rural region of Bangladesh. Data came from a prospective demographic and health survey conducted in Matlab thana by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh. Marriage and birth records from 1975 to 1982 were used to generate first birth intervals. A parametric hazards model …

Effects Of Grandmother's Presence And Work Effort On Fertility, Survivorship, And Weight In Two Ethnic Groups In N.E. India, D. L. Leonetti, D. C. Nath, N. S. Hemam, D. B. Neill

Social Sciences

Hypotheses regarding the selection for extension of post-menopausal life in humans depend on showing that reproductive success is enhanced via positive effects of older persons on the fertility and offspring viability of descendants. We investigate grandmother effects in 617 patrilineal Bengali and 772 matrilineal Khasi households in N.E. India. Direct access to resources varies. Bengali women do no field labor nor do they market or own property. Khasi women own property and are productive workers in the fields and in wage labor and manage the household resources via selling and buying in the markets. The current living status and the …

Farm Program Spending Under The President’S 2006 Budget Proposal, Roger Selley, Bruce B. Johnson

Cornhusker Economics

According to Secretary of Agriculture Johanns news release on February 7, 2005, the President’s 2006 budget proposes a net reduction in farm support program spending nationally of about $587 million in 2006, and $5.7 billion from 2006 through 2015. These proposals include: reducing the payment limitation for all commodity payments, making marketing assistance loans based on historical production and reducing all commodity payments to farmers by 5 percent. It is difficult to estimate the impact of any changes in the payment limitation. Nearly all producers have their business arrangements configured to avoid the current payment limitations, and their ability to …

A Framework For The “Entrepreneurial” Learner Of The 21st Century, Connie I. Reimers-Hild, James W. King, John E. Foster, Susan Fritz, Steven S. Waller, Daniel W. Wheeler

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

Successful distance learners and entrepreneurs may be similar in that they seek out and capitalize on opportunities and marshal resources to achieve their goals. Further, entrepreneurial behavior is a vital asset in the rapidly changing global knowledge economy of the 21 st Century. This paper presents a theoretical framework for examining the characteristics of successful distance learners through the lens of entrepreneurship. The proposed theoretical framework suggests a relationship between the entrepreneurial personality, which is the combined score of locus of control, need for achievement and risk taking propensity, with success and persistence in the academic environment.
