Taichman, Jason Christie, Rosette Biester, Sandra Kaplan, John Hansen-Flaschen, Harold I. Palevsky, C. Gregory Elliott

Faculty Publications

The effects of pulmonary arterial hypertension on brain function are not understood, despite patients' frequent complaints of cognitive difficulties. Using clinical instruments normally administered during standard in-person assessment of neurocognitive function in adults, we assembled a battery of tests designed for administration over the telephone. The purpose was to improve patient participation, facilitate repeated test administration, and reduce the cost of research on the neuropsychological consequences of acute and chronic cardiorespiratory diseases. We undertook this study to validate telephone administration of the tests. Methods: 23 adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension underwent neurocognitive assessment using both standard in-person and telephone test …

‘Omaha Blues’ Recalls Lost Childhood, Timothy G. Anderson Apr 2005

‘Omaha Blues’ Recalls Lost Childhood, Timothy G. Anderson

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Faculty Publications

In 1997, I walked into Joe Lelyveld’s office and handed him a newspaper clipping about his parents. Lelyveld was executive editor of the New York Times, and I was one of his nearly 1,100 news department employees. The clipping, from a World-Herald column, noted that the Lelyvelds had once lived in Omaha; that Arthur, Joe’s father, had been rabbi at Temple Israel in the early 1940s; that his mother, Toby, had taught at the University of Omaha; and that the Lelyvelds had divorced in 1964. The news was that Toby had died in New York at age 85. If I …

Snowpack Control Over The Thermal Offset Of Air And Soil Temperatures In Eastern North Dakota, Andrew Grundstein, Paul E. Todhunter, Thomas Mote Apr 2005

Snowpack Control Over The Thermal Offset Of Air And Soil Temperatures In Eastern North Dakota, Andrew Grundstein, Paul E. Todhunter, Thomas Mote

Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications

[1] The close relationship between air and ground temperatures has been used to reconstruct paleoclimate conditions from ground temperatures. Unfortunately, the presence of snow decouples air and ground temperatures and obscures their relationship. The objective of this paper is to investigate the role that snowpack conditions play in affecting the relationship between air and soil temperatures. The annual thermal offset between mean annual soil and air temperatures is examined over a 12 year period (1990–2002) at Fargo, ND, using observed soil temperatures along with simulations from a physically based snowpack model. Early season snow cover does not necessarily lead to …

A Preliminary Evaluation Of Heartland Head Start, Michelle Uhlenkott '05 Apr 2005

A Preliminary Evaluation Of Heartland Head Start, Michelle Uhlenkott '05

Honors Projects

Head Start, a federally funded preschool program for low-income families, works to nurture the children academically, socially, and nutritionally. In the past couple of years social critics and the federal government have begun questioning the efforts of Head Start, arguing that the children in the program do not progress enough in academic areas for the money spent on them. Heartland Head Start, the local chapter which manages thirteen preschool classrooms and 325-330 children annually, is mandated by the federal government to observe and test the children three times per year on multiple indicators to monitor their academic progress. This study, …

The Usability Study Of The Coates Library Website: Final Report, Benjamin R. Harris Apr 2005

The Usability Study Of The Coates Library Website: Final Report, Benjamin R. Harris

Library Faculty Research

Philosophies underlying web design principles and the usability of web architecture change over time. What worked 5 years ago may be irrelevant today, and design fads quickly come and go. Therefore, it is helpful to conduct research studies in the usability and design of web pages to determine how these resources continue to perform well and what areas require revision or would benefit from improvement. After a number of revisions and after two years in its current iteration, a usability study of the Coates Library website would give librarians and web team members the opportunity to evaluate the site. In …

The Comparative Advantages Of Family-Owned Businesses, Jeffrey S. Royer Apr 2005

The Comparative Advantages Of Family-Owned Businesses, Jeffrey S. Royer

Cornhusker Economics

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 97 percent of the farms in the United States are family farms (Banker and MacDonald). In addition, many agricultural input suppliers, marketing and processing firms, and other agricultural businesses are family-owned or controlled. Among the food processing and wholesaling companies that are family-owned or controlled are Archer Daniels Midland, Campbell Soup, Pilgrim’s Pride, Smithfield Foods, J. M. Smucker, and Tyson Foods (Boland). More generally, over 35 percent of the firms included in the Standard and Poor’s 500 Index are family-held firms (Anderson and Reeb).
