Sustainable Growth In Financial Sector Of Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr. Apr 2005

Sustainable Growth In Financial Sector Of Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

It is pertinent to ask whether the reforms brought about in the financial sector of Pakistan will persist generating sustainable growth in the sector or quickly dissipate. In my view there are at least eight factors that attest to the sustainability of growth in the financial sector. Of course, the sector cannot be divorced from the overall external, domestic and macroeconomic conditions. If there is a breakdown in political stability or macroeconomic situation is under stress, then these factors will not be operative. This analysis assumes stability, continuity of good policies and good governance. What are these factors

Testing Backward Linkages Of Fdi In China, Zhuomin Liu Apr 2005

Testing Backward Linkages Of Fdi In China, Zhuomin Liu

Lingnan Theses

Inward FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) affects productivity of local industries through three channels- direct effects, horizontal spillovers, and vertical linkages. This study focuses on the backward linkages of FDI in the 28 two-digit manufacturing sectors in China, as well as their horizontal and forward linkage effects. Two related tests, firm level pooled data test 1999-2002 and industrial level panel data test 1994-2003 are conducted to investigate whether backward linkages from multinational buyers brings productivity gain to local suppliers. Firm level tests provide convincing evidence that increase backward linkage of FDI will lead to productivity gains. This includes not only total …

Interrelationships Of Workplace Relocations, Residential Relocations And Commuting Patterns, Chansung Kim Apr 2005

Interrelationships Of Workplace Relocations, Residential Relocations And Commuting Patterns, Chansung Kim

Dissertations and Theses

During the past few decades, the populations of many U.S. and European cities have shown the same residence and workplace mobility patterns: Annually, approximately 10 percent of the population changed residences and approximately 20 percent of employed workers changed workplaces within the same metropolitan area. According to a U.K. transportation panel survey, annually, about 20 percent of commuters changed their commute mode.

Even though the Seattle metropolitan region experienced a substantial amount of residential and workplace mobility and a boom in employment and population in the 1990s, the morning commute time and distance was roughly constant. To explain this situation, …

Glutamate Receptors In Perirhinal Cortex Mediate Encoding, Retrieval, And Consolidation Of Object Recognition Memory., Boyer D Winters, Timothy J Bussey Apr 2005

Glutamate Receptors In Perirhinal Cortex Mediate Encoding, Retrieval, And Consolidation Of Object Recognition Memory., Boyer D Winters, Timothy J Bussey

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Object recognition is consistently impaired in human amnesia and animal models thereof. Results from subjects with permanent brain damage have revealed the importance of the perirhinal cortex to object recognition memory. Here, we report evidence from rats for interdependent but distinct stages in object recognition memory (encoding, retrieval, and consolidation), which require glutamate receptor activity within perirhinal cortex. Transient blockade of AMPA receptor-mediated synaptic transmission within perirhinal cortex disrupted encoding for short- and long-term memory as well as retrieval and consolidation. In contrast, transient NMDA receptor blockade during encoding affected only long-term object recognition memory; NMDA receptor activity was also …

Supreme Court Rules Against Attempt To Beat County Zoning Deadline, J. David Aiken Apr 2005

Supreme Court Rules Against Attempt To Beat County Zoning Deadline, J. David Aiken

Cornhusker Economics

One of the most misunderstood concepts in zoning law is that of non-conforming uses, or “grandfathering.” Most zoning regulations exempt existing uses that would not conform to the new (or revised) zoning regulation. These uses (land uses or buildings) are called non-conforming uses because they do not conform to the new (or revised) zoning regulation. The often mistaken belief is that zoning regulations must leave non-conforming uses alone. This is incorrect: Neb.Rev.Stat. § 23-173.01 allows non-conforming uses to be terminated, continued or regulated by a county zoning regulation. As a practical matter, however, most counties will not regulate or terminate …

Social Withdrawal, Observed Peer Acceptance, And The Development Of Self-Perceptions In Children Ages 4 To 7 Years, Larry J. Nelson, Kenneth H. Rubin, Nathan A. Fox Apr 2005

Social Withdrawal, Observed Peer Acceptance, And The Development Of Self-Perceptions In Children Ages 4 To 7 Years, Larry J. Nelson, Kenneth H. Rubin, Nathan A. Fox

Faculty Publications

Children who think poorly about themselves are considered at-risk for a myriad of negative outcomes. Thus, it is important to explore possible origins of such cognitions, particularly in young children. The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between various nonsocial behaviors (i.e., reticence and social withdrawal), observed peer acceptance at ages 4 and 7 years, and self-perceptions at age 7 years in both boys and girls, respectively.

Participants included 163 children (89 females, 74 males) who were seen at age 4 and then again at age 7 years. For girls, results revealed that nonsocial behavior (both reticence …

An Economic Theory Of Infrastructure And Commons Management, Brett M. Frischmann Apr 2005

An Economic Theory Of Infrastructure And Commons Management, Brett M. Frischmann

ExpressO

In this article, Professor Frischmann combines a number of current debates across many disciplinary lines, all of which examine from different perspectives whether certain resources should be managed through a regime of private property or through a regime of open access. Frischmann develops and applies a theory that demonstrates there are strong economic arguments for managing and sustaining openly accessible infrastructure. The approach he takes differs from conventional analyses in that he focuses extensively on demand-side considerations and fully explores how infrastructure resources generate value for consumers and society. As a result, the theory brings into focus the social value …

The Deregulation Of International Trucking In The European Union: Form And Effect, Francine Lafontaine, Laura M. Valeri Apr 2005

The Deregulation Of International Trucking In The European Union: Form And Effect, Francine Lafontaine, Laura M. Valeri

Law & Economics Working Papers Archive: 2003-2009

This paper examines how the deregulation of the international road transport industry in Western Europe has affected 1- the total quantity of cross-border road transport in the region; 2- the degree to which shippers outsource rather than integrate vertically their cross-border transport needs; and 3- the extent to which different countries participate in international road freight transport in Western Europe. Not surprisingly, we find that deregulation has had a large positive effect on the amount of international road transport net of the effect of the trade ties that grew over time among European Union countries. Moreover, consistent with the fact …

The Social And Economic Costs Of Employee Misclassification In The Maine Construction Industry, Françoise Carré, Randall Wilson Apr 2005

The Social And Economic Costs Of Employee Misclassification In The Maine Construction Industry, Françoise Carré, Randall Wilson

Center for Social Policy Publications

With this study, a cross disciplinary team of the Center for Construction Policy Research has taken a first and significant step in documenting employee misclassification in the Maine construction industry. This report documents the dimensions of misclassification and its implications for tax collection and worker compensation insurance.

Misclassification occurs when employers treat workers who would otherwise be waged or salaried employees as independent contractors (self employed). Or as one report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Labor put it, misclassification occurs “when workers (who should be) getting W-2 forms for income tax filing instead receive 1099-Miscellaneous Income forms."
