Transparency In The Government Communication Process: The Perspective Of Government Communicators, Jenille Fairbanks
Theses and Dissertations
This study presents an understanding of the role of transparency in the communication processes of agencies of the United States Federal Government, as guided by principles of stakeholder management, models of public relations, and a model for government agency communication. These theories and models all suggest that increased openness in organizations will result in improved organizational functioning and in some instances, increases in organizational trust. The perspectives presented in this paper were collected through eighteen semi-structured in-depth interviews of professional communicators for various agencies in the United States Federal Government. Paganism is a loosely organized community whose religious ideology incorporates the immanence of Deity. As a religious association with an ideology different from traditional Judeo-Christian faiths, members are often labeled as deviant and subjected to various negative sanctions. By relying on survey data collected on April 9-12, 1996 and in depth personal interviews collected on October 10-13, 1996, this study presents a model that best describes and explains acceptance and participation in pagan spiritualism. This study identifies three characteristics associated with positive ratings of childhood religious affiliation (church disaffection, family closeness, and role), three characteristics associated with feelings of belonging …

People Into Ghosts: Chachi Death Rituals As Shape-Shifting, Istvan Praet
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This article deals with the corporeality of the dead in native South American societies. Focusing on the Chachi of Northwest Ecuador, I question whether the separation of the dead from the living is best analyzed in terms of the lack of a body. While relevant in most ordinary circumstances, the division between having or not having a body hampers ourcapacitytounderstandcrisissituations,especiallywhensomebodydies. I then turn to the particular role played by “ghosts” during funerary rituals,and the ways in which mourners “shift shape” into visible and physically present ghosts, thus assuming the forms of the dead. In Amazonia, body is a central organizing element of social life. Recent discussions in Amazonian anthropology show,on the one hand, the multiple ways in which the body acts in the formation of social relations, and, on the other, how social relations work in the formation of bodies. Bodies are relationally constituted in the diverse embodied processes through which Amazonian peoples form, maintain and regulate relations to each other. It is in this same manner that people also relate to, and are transformed into, different nonhuman persons. This article examines these dynamics of the body among the Yine (Piro) of Eastern …

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek, in his paper, "Imre Kertész's Nobel Prize, Public Discourse, and the Media," discusses aspects of media coverage in German-, Hungarian-, and English-language newspapers and magazines of the 2002 Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded to Imre Kertész. The perspective of Tötösy's analysis is to gauge the importance and impact of media coverage comparatively in the three cultural and media landscapes. Based on selected examples from newspapers and magazines with an international scope, Tötösy argues that the reception of Kertész's Nobel Prize suggests the convergence of the media (as the message) and the contents of the message within …
