Partnerships for Children and Families Project

This report highlights results from our study of three innovative child welfare programs in Ontario attempting to modify front line child protection practice. These programs endeavor to deliver child welfare services in ways that promote greater accessibility and acceptability of services for families, provide increased levels of assistance to families, afford a better understanding of daily living circumstances of children and families, and engage the community in protecting children. Study results confirm that the three programs were successful in accomplishing these goals. Parents’, service providers’, and community members’ perceptions of these programs showcase the positive helping relationships and community partnerships …

The ‘international system’ concept of the traditional triad and the English School’s (hereafter ES) methodological pluralism are both aspects of the School that are taken for granted. However, neither the international system concept nor the ES’s methodological pluralism are well understood. In both cases, over the years the debate has been patchy and unsustained. With regards to the international system concept, the debate has largely revolved around whether the concept remains relevant.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects on the Hoffman reflex and motor response with an analgesic (Biofreeze®). Design: The study was a 2X6 design. The independent variables in this study were treatment and time. The dependent variables were the H-reflex (volts) and the M response (volts). Treatment was randomly assigned to control for the effects of order. Setting: This study took place in the Exercise Physiology Laboratory located in the Health and Human Performance Building at Indiana State University. The development of the wealthy slave-holding elite in the Tidewater region of Northern Virginia during the mid-seventeenth through mid-eighteenth centuries was unique in that it was based on the deliberate formation of kinship networks. The members of the Old World aristocracy that migrated to Northern Virginia brought with them their traditional ideas of society. However, the New World provided opportunities to these immigrants that were unavailable to them in their native country. Therefore, a blend of Old World culture and New World opportunities merged to create a distinctive American society. This society was based on kinship networks among a dose-knit …

The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the benefit needs of public golf course consumer. Ten participants with various demographic backgrounds were interviewed concerning their; a) golf skills, b) frequency of participation, c) playing behavior, d) benefit thoughts, and e) preferences of a public golf course. The conceptions that emerged from the participants' benefit needs in golf included: a) satisfaction, b) achievement, and c) well-being. The subconceptions, referred to as categories in this study associated with satisfaction were enjoyment, convenience, and the cost they accrue for each individual and include all satisfying psychological outcomes related to golf. The purpose of this study was to investigate the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and its' relationship to Type 2 diabetes outcomes. One hundred and sixty-two adults ages 45 to 75 with Type 2 diabetes were recruited from two physicians' offices in the Midwest. Participants completed instruments that assessed (a) diabetes-specific attitude, (b) diabetes-specific self-efficacy, ( c) physician influence, ( d) significant other influence, and ( e) diabetes-specific quality of life. A measurement of metabolic control was also obtained. Multiple regressions were performed using (a) quality of life and (b) metabolic control as criterion variables. This Policy Brief examines issues that can be expected to arise as California moves to significantly expand the use of mandatory managed care arrangements for Medi-Cal enrollees with disabilities. This analysis is based on information gleaned from more than a decade of Medicaid managed care specification analyses for the federal government and private funders, focusing on both the general beneficiary population and persons with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Many churches are struggling to attract younger generations to their services. While the ministry changes from traditional style to contemporary style worked to draw baby-boomers back into the church, it did not have the same effect on people in their 20's and 30's. However, there are churches that draw younger generations in large numbers. Known as postmodern churches, they look significantly different in their worship style and ministry approach. Contemporary churches have attempted to incorporate the same style elements into their services, but have not seen similar results. This study was a secondary analysis designed to examine the ecological system indicators of child maltreatment potential. A total of 263 families living within 200% of the poverty level were included in the sample. Results of the study revealed the exosystem indicator of social support had the greatest impact on child maltreatment while maltreatment of the parent as a child (history of maltreatment), an ontogenic system indicator, was the second highest predictor. Additionally, these two indicators were highly correlated within the structural model. The microsystem indicator of parental educational attainment and the macrosystem indicator of belief in corporal punishment had …

Second Servings: Online Publication And Its Impact On Second-Day Leads In Newspapers, Jack Rosenberry

A content analysis comparing contemporary newspaper leads to ones from 15 years earlier, before Internet publication became commonplace, determined that use of “first day” (direct/summary) leads has declined over that time. The findings support an argument that newspapers’ print editions have become a permanent second-day publication concurrent with the rise of the 24-hour news cycle and the phenomenon of newspapers using their online editions to break news.

This study evaluated how BSW students at two Texas universities, one publicly funded and one privately funded, perceive their level of preparedness, comfort and the importance of addressing / using religion and spirituality in social work. In this study 41 students nearing the completion of their baccalaureate degree and enrolled in a field placement, were invited to complete a multi-faceted questionnaire consisting of 92 very specific questions. Of the 41 students invited to participate in the study, all subjects chose to complete the questionnaire. This large prospective study determined that noncompleters of interdisciplinary tertiary rehabilitation for CDOMDs had comparatively poor socioeconomic outcomes in the year after discharge from treatment, especially on work status and health utilization outcomes. These outcomes are of great relevance to societal, medical, and indemnity costs and future worker productivity. Several risk factors of possible importance in identifying potential noncompleters early in the treatment program were identified that may yield more effective interventions tailored to maintain compliance and decrease the percentage of drop-outs.

Error Management Theory (Haselton & Buss, 2000) proposes that certain human biases evolved as an adaptation to cost differentials between certain types of errors that can be committed in social situations. This study examined whether the hostile attribution bias (Dodge, 1980), a tendency in aggressive children and adults to over-perceive aggressive intent in others, could be accounted for by Error Management Theory. In a vignette study, participants rated their perceived aggression of a potential perpetrator in a car accident. Different vignettes depicted the same situation under various conditions in terms of who accompanied the "participant". Conditions were changed in order …

Attachment Style And Relationship Predictors Of Adult Children's Responsive Caregiving To Dependent Parents, Brent T. Tucker

The purpose of this study was to examine whether anxious attachment, avoidant attachment, relationship closeness, and trust in the relationship predict adult children caregivers' (ACC) level of responsiveness to their dependent parents. Eighty-four adult children who provide support for a dependent parent were included in this study. Furthermore, correlations of avoidant attachment style with responsive caregiving and anxiety attachment style with responsive caregiving were investigated. A multiple regression was conducted and it was found that anxious attachment, trust, and relationship closeness stastically predicted responsive caregiving of ACCs caring for dependent parents [R2 = .26, F (3, 80) = 9.47, p < .001]. This linear combination of variables accounted for 26% of the variance in responsive caregiving. A voidant attachment was not found to predict responsive caregiving. There were no significant bivariate correlations found between anxious attachment and responsive caregiving or between avoidant attachment and responsive caregiving.

This study examined the influence of Chinese American parents on their children's ethnic identity. Two research questions were designed to examine these relationships: Does the personal construct of Chinese American parents influence their children's ethnic identity and does the length of stay in the United States of Chinese American parents influence children's ethnic identity? Parental influence was identified as parents' ethnic behaviors, parents' ethnic values, parents' personal construct, and their length of stay in the United States. Studies of locomotion in virtual environments assume that correct geometric principles define the relationship between walking speed and environmental flow. However, we have observed that geometrically correct optic flow appears to be too slow during simulated locomotion on a treadmill. Experiment 1 documents the effect in a head-mounted display. Experiment 2 shows that the effect is eliminated when the gaze is directed downward or to the side, or when the walking speed is slow. Experiment 3 shows that the effect is unchanged by stride length. Experiment 4 verifies that the effect is not attributable to image jitter. The change in …

Significant advances have recently been made concerning the integration of symbolic knowledge representation with artificial neural networks (also called connectionist systems). However, while the integration with propositional paradigms has resulted in applicable systems, the case of first-order knowledge representation has so far hardly proceeded beyond theoretical studies which prove the existence of connectionist systems for approximating first-order logic programs up to any chosen precision. One of the most frequently studied areas in professional baseball is the Reserve Clause. Originally introduced in 1879 by the National League, the Reserve Clause indefinitely tied a player's services to his current team and was implemented in an attempt to prevent baseball salaries from increasing and reduce team expenses.
