Common Fare: An Example Of “Blanket” Rates In Hawai’I Waterborne Trade, Henry S. Marcus, H David Bess, Michael E. Valdez

Journal of Transportation Management

Blanket” rate structures apply uniform rates to a geographical region in spite of differences in the costs of carrying the goods. They are generally utilized by carriers to achieve some strategic objective, whether rate simplification, to be more competitive, or to meet some political objectives. While blanket rates are common in land transportation, the Hawai’i waterborne trade offers a unique example of this pricing mechanism. How Unobservable Productivity Biases The Value Of A Statistical Life, Thomas J. Kniesner, W. Kip Viscusi, James P. Ziliak, Christopher Woock

Economics - All Scholarship

A prominent theoretical controversy in the compensating differentials literature concerns unobservable individual productivity. Competing models yield opposite predictions depending on whether the unobservable productivity is safety-related skill or productivity generally. Using five panel waves and several new measures of worker fatality risks, first-difference estimates imply that omitting individual heterogeneity leads to overestimates of the value of statistical life, consistent with the latent safety-related skill interpretation. Risk measures with less measurement error raise the value of statistical life, the net effect being that estimates from the static model range from $5.3 million to $6.7 million, with dynamic model estimates somewhat higher.

Firing a sales staff which acts in an immoral and illegal manner may appear to be an easy solution, but, as the staff at Existo’s finds out, is only the tip of the iceberg of the company’s real problems. Students are confronted in this two-part case with two critical decision points: In Part A one of Existo’s customers has in her possession a seemingly fraudulent letter from one of the exsalesman from the Springfield operation which offered the customer a higher discount than the original contract agreement. This experiential exercise, designed for our introductory business course, uses a classroom debate to teach the concepts of stakeholders, social obligation/social responsibility, and ethical frameworks for decision-making. The basis for the debate is the request by Weaver’s Cove Energy to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Fall River, Massachusetts. Weaver’s Cove has proposed the facility for an abandoned industrial site on the waterfront. The exercise addresses the three learning goals listed above through readings, position construction, and the debate itself. The rationale for the assignment and the chosen pedagogy are presented. Looking Beyond The Shipyard: Economic Development Challenges Of Southern Maine And Seacoast New Hampshire, Charles S. Colgan

Regional Studies

The threatened closure of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has spurred an intense examination of the future economic prospects for York County, Maine and Rockingham County, New Hampshire. This report provides the first integrated analysis of the shipyard’s effects on both the Maine and New Hampshire economies. The shipyard accounts for more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs across the two-state region. Over 80% of these jobs are in York County, with an additional 10% in Rockingham County and the balance spread through the rest of Maine and New Hampshire. The total jobs associated with the shipyard account for 3.5% of …

Poverty, Race And The Contexts Of Achievement: Examining Educational Experiences Of Children In The American South, Maryah Stella Fram, Julie Miller-Cribbs, Lee Van Horn

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper reports findings of a study examining child-, classroom-, and school-level factors that effect academic achievement among public school children in the South. Using ECLS-K data, we compare and contrast the learning environments in high/low minority and high/low poverty schools. A sizeable minority of Southern children attend schools that are race and/or class segregated; on multiple dimensions these schools are less desirable than are schools attended by more privileged children, and children attending these schools have lower levels of academic achievement. Results from 3-level random intercepts models show that a range of child and family factors, as well as …

The process of political socialisation of adolescents includes more than the acquisition of knowledge about society, citizenship and the political system. In a democracy, citizens are expected to participate actively in the political process. Active participation, however, requires citizens to believe in their own ability to influence the course of politics, in other words, to feel politically efficacious. Therefore, enhancing control beliefs and the willingness to act politically could be viewed as important areas of civic and citizenship education. In 1994, following the filming of Schindler's List, many survivors of the Nazi Holocaust came forward to offer their stories. Realizing that time was running out to document these personal histories, film director Steven Spielberg established the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation (SVHF). In late 2003, the U-M University Library initiated contact with the SVHF with the goal of bringing access to the Video History Archive to the U-M campus.

Psychometric Assessment Of The Comprehensive Effects Of Alcohol Questionnaire: Comparing A Brief Version To The Original Full Scale, Lindsay S. Ham, Sherry H. Stewart, Peter J. Norton, Debra A. Hope

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The current set of studies compared the psychometric properties of the original Comprehensive Effects of Alcohol Questionnaire (CEOA) to a 15-item version (B-CEOA) in a nonclinical undergraduate sample (N = 581), and attempted to replicate and extend the B-CEOA findings in an undergraduate sample referred to an alcohol intervention (N = 734). Psychometric assessment included construct validity, internal consistency, and concurrent validity, using both “positive” and “negative” expectancy items in all analyses. Results provided further support for the empirical validity of the original CEOA, and provided support for the use of the B-CEOA despite the reduction in the …

Landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) affect communities and individuals long after conflicts end and therefore have a profound effect on opportunities for post-conflict peacebuilding. In the immediate post-conflict phase the presence, or simply the threat, of landmines can hamper refugee return and the implementation of humanitarian assistance programmes. They pose a long-term social, economic and environmental threat that denies the use of fertile land and access to water and affects flows of people, goods and services. There is also an important security risk from abandoned explosive ordnance stockpiles or caches which, if not properly secured or destroyed following the end …
