The Wilson’s Library Literature Online tutorial (LLOT) was designed for the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College. This article provides background on the institution, summarize findings from a literature review of use of library tutorials at the graduate level, discusses the planning and the needs assessment for the tutorial, discusses the educational strategies used in the tutorial and its strategic design based on the literature review, proposes an evaluation form for the tutorial, and a budget for the tutorial.

This article examines what a public forum is, and whether or not a library can legitimately claim to be one. Beginning with an imaginary visit to a rather odd public park, and a brief review of the development of the legal doctrine of the public forum, an attempt is made to establish that the library 1) falls far short of being a genuine public forum, 2) is actually ambivalent about being a forum at all, and 3) could, if it really wanted to, become much more of a forum by making a very simple change in its online catalog.

Philosophically, materialists and idealists understand the world differently. In materialist theory information directly represents the natural world, whereas idealism understands it to be the very structure of thought. Some of the problems arising between information theory and the actual practice of librarianship are due to mixing concepts from incompatible theories. The concept of information favored by materialist theories is not interchangeable with the concepts preferred by idealists and critical theorists. Materialism overemphasizes the empirical features of information, while giving short shrift to the possibility that information can be both factual and evaluative. The empowered intentional learner is a starting point towards a grounded theory in information literacy instruction. The authors engage this theory in a critical dialogue with instructional practice, in this instance a for-credit college freshman class built around information literacy concepts. Only through such reflection, where theory informs practice and practice informs theory, is it possible to develop a grounded theory where a less privileged role for the instruction librarian takes a back seat role to the control students should have over their own learning.

Do Imports Cause Economic Growth? A Time-Series Investigation Of The U.S. Data, Peter J. Saunders, Koushik Ghosh

This paper investigates the relationship between imports and economic growth in the US in the long run and the short run. Quarterly data ranging from the first quarter of 1970 to the fourth quarter of 2000 are used to investigate this relationship. Cointegration tests using Johansen's (] 988) technique are used to analyze the long run relationship between imports and economic growth (measured by nominal GDP). Test results indicate that imports and economic growth are related in the long run. The short run analysis of the data is conducted within vector error correction (VEC) testing framework. Poverty And Fertility In The American South, Leonard M. Lopoo

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This project first reports descriptive evidence of the characteristics of mothers in the American South and compares them to mothers in other regions of the country. Women in the South (and West) tend to have their children at younger ages than those in the Midwest and Northeast. Mothers in the South (and West) also have much lower levels of education and are more likely to be African American or Hispanic compared to women in the Midwest and Northeast. Next, this paper attempts to link the characteristics of the mothers in the American South to the high rates of poverty there. …

Faculty-Librarian Collaboration To Teach Research Skills: Electronic Symbiosis, Navaz P. Bhavnagri, Veronica Bielat

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

This article discusses faculty-librarian collaboration to integrate technology in a course that focuses on teaching empirical research methodologies and library research skills to elementary and early childhood education graduate students. Vygotsky’s theory, standards in teacher education, and information literacy standards form the conceptual framework that supports this collaboration. The purpose and procedures of this collaboration, as well as student, faculty, and librarian outcomes, are discussed. This present collaboration on bibliographic instruction and the use of Blackboard courseware is framed within the context of past history of collaboration and future plans to expand this collaboration.

Ranking Inequality: Applications Of Multivariate Subset Selection, William C. Horrace, Joseph T. Marchand, Timothy M. Smeeding

Economics - All Scholarship

Inequality measures are often presented in the form of a rank ordering to highlight their relative magnitudes. However, a rank ordering may produce misleading inference, because the inequality measures themselves are statistical estimators with different standard errors, and because a rank ordering necessarily implies multiple comparisons across all measures. Within this setting, if differences between several inequality measures are simultaneously and statistically insignificant, the interpretation of the ranking is changed. This study uses a multivariate subset selection procedure to make simultaneous distinctions across inequality measures at a pre-specified confidence level. At George Washington University, librarians and faculty have partnered to provide an effective introduction to information literacy to all freshmen. The structure of the new writing program promotes goals that are at the intersection of the Council of Writing Program Administrators and Association of College and Research Libraries. Furthermore, the structure maintains the collaboration and conversation among the two parties, promoting an on-going and evolving relationship.

Medicaid's Role In Treating Children In Military Families, Peter Shin, Sara J. Rosenbaum, D. Richard Mauery

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This analysis examines Medicaid's role in meeting the health care needs of children in military families who receive their health insurance coverage through TRICARE. TRICARE is the Department of Defense's worldwide health insurance program for active duty and retired military service members and their families. The 2000-2002 National Survey of Children with Special Health Care Needs, as well as a series of semi-structured telephone interviews, were used to assess Medicaid's role as a supplemental insurer for military children with special health care needs (CSHCN).
