Exchange Rate Regimes And The Twin Economies Of Hong Kong And Singapore, Yue Ma, Y. Y. Kueh, Raymond, C. W. Ng
Exchange Rate Regimes And The Twin Economies Of Hong Kong And Singapore, Yue Ma, Y. Y. Kueh, Raymond, C. W. Ng
CAPS Working Paper Series
Based on a small, open-economy IS-LM prototype model, this paper examines the sources of macroeconomic instabilities in Hong Kong and Singapore operating under two similar cu訂ency board arrangements (CBAs). The empirical findings suggest that in general both extemal and intemal factors contribute to the macroeconomic volatilities observed in the two economies. Interestingly, whilst in Hong Kong interest rate is the single most important factor accounting for the variation in real GDP, price level and money supply, in most cases in Singapore the volatilities of these three macro variables cannot be attributed to a significant single facto r. Interest rate in …

Macroeconomic Instability In Hong Kong : Internal And External Factors, Yue Ma, Y.Y. Kueh, Raymond C.W. Ng
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
The paper examines the sources of macroeconomic instability in Hong Kong under the linked exchange rate regime. A prototype IS-LM model is estimated, with adaptation to the restrictions posed by the US dollar peg that has been in place in Hong Kong since 1983. Among all external and internal factors of instability examined, local Hong Kong interest rate is found to have a dominant effect on real GDP, price and money supply. Over the long run, however, the US interest rate is the driving force behind the Hong Kong interest rate. Foreign inflation also affects Hong Kong's domestic demand and …
Racial Identity And The Development Of Body Image Issues Among African American Adolescent Girls, Sharlene Nagy Hesse-Biber, Stephanie A. Howling, Patricia Leavy, Meg Lovejoy
Racial Identity And The Development Of Body Image Issues Among African American Adolescent Girls, Sharlene Nagy Hesse-Biber, Stephanie A. Howling, Patricia Leavy, Meg Lovejoy
The Qualitative Report
As readers, children with dyslexia are vulnerable to becoming academically, socially, and emotionally detached from education. Traditional educational practices tend to use quantitative measures to diagnose children to better serve their needs and researchers, who study students with special needs often focus on a deficit model that quantify just how far a child is from the norm. This practice, while full of good intentions, often creates emotional scars and feelings of inferiority in a child. This reductionist view of a disability is most likely different from the lived experience of the person with the disability. To get a complete picture, …
Relating The Categories In Grounded Theory Analysis: Using A Conditional Relationship Guide And Reflective Coding Matrix, Karen Wilson Scott
Relating The Categories In Grounded Theory Analysis: Using A Conditional Relationship Guide And Reflective Coding Matrix, Karen Wilson Scott
The Qualitative Report
This paper describes the process for employing two principal instruments for relating the categories identifying the central phenomenon in grounded theory analysis. The Conditional Relationship Guide contextualizes the central phenomenon and relates structure with process. The second tool, the Reflective Coding Matrix, captures the higher level of abstraction necessary to bridge to the final phase of grounded theory analysis, selective coding and interpretation and ultimately to the theory generation. Examples of each instrument are provided and discussed.
Outcomes-Based Education In The English Second Language Classroom In South Africa, Gawie Schlebusch, Motsamai Thobedi
Outcomes-Based Education In The English Second Language Classroom In South Africa, Gawie Schlebusch, Motsamai Thobedi
The Qualitative Report
This study focuses on the impact of race, and its intersection with gender, in influencing and/or preventing the development of disordered body image. Specifically, Black samples are examined to see the role that racial identity plays in the process of developing such attitudes. Using qualitative data analysis methods rooted in grounded theory, the study finds that race is intrinsically linked to the notion of self-esteem, non-internalization, and maternal support, and that in turn these factors serve to prevent the African American sample from the development of body image dissatisfaction
Studying Human-Centered It Innovation Using A Grounded Action Learning Approach, David J. Pauleen, Pak Yoong
Studying Human-Centered It Innovation Using A Grounded Action Learning Approach, David J. Pauleen, Pak Yoong
The Qualitative Report
This paper describes how two research methodologies, grounded theory and action learning, were combined to produce a rigorous yet creative and flexible method for field study of a recent IT-based innovation, virtual teams. Essentially, an action learning program was used to train facilitators of virtual teams and generate research data while grounded theory techniques were used to analyze and interpret the data. This paper shows how this combined method can be used to develop local and practical theory for complex, human-centered areas of information technology. The implications of this grounded action learning approach for practice and research in IS will …

Beyond The Horizon: Visitor Meaning-Making And The Vatican Frescoes, Lee Brodie
The Qualitative Report
The re-birth of South Africa in 1994 has brought the implementation of effective educational policies. Simultaneously, the Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) approach has been introduced to advance teaching and learning of the Learning areas in schools in South Africa. This article focuses on the learning of English as a Second Language (ESL) in Grade eight. The focus is furthermore on schools from the Black township areas, called previously disadvantaged schools. The introduction of OBE in South Africa heralds an era of meaningful teaching. The use of OBE strives to root out the last vestiges of Apartheid education. With an OBE approach, …
Using Qualitative Methods To Understand The Educational Experiences Of Students With Dyslexia, Debby Zambo
Using Qualitative Methods To Understand The Educational Experiences Of Students With Dyslexia, Debby Zambo
The Qualitative Report
The paper argues that the systematic review of qualitative research is best served by reliance upon qualitative methods themselves. A case is made for strengthening the narrative literature review and using narrative itself as a method of review. A technique is proposed that builds upon recent developments in qualitative systematic review by the use of a narrative inductive method of analysis. The essence of qualitative work is described. The natural ability for issues of ethnicity and diversity to be investigated through a qualitative approach is elaborated Recent developments in systematic review are delineated, including the Delphi and Signal and Noise …
Rethinking Validity In Qualitative Research From A Social Constructionist Perspective: From Is This Valid Research? To What Is This Research Valid For?, Jeffrey P. Aguinaldo
Rethinking Validity In Qualitative Research From A Social Constructionist Perspective: From Is This Valid Research? To What Is This Research Valid For?, Jeffrey P. Aguinaldo
The Qualitative Report
This article theorizes the issue of validity that is premised upon social constructionist assumptions, particularly as it is applied to the assessment of qualitative research. As a social construction, validity must thus be interrogated for its discursive function within the social sciences. I will argue that, as a criterion of assessment, validity polices the social science enterprise and thus, functions as a practice of power through the de/legitimation of social knowledge, research practice, and experiential possibilities. This critique will lead into a reformulation of validity that actively recognizes and negotiates its practice of power. Within this reformulation, research findings are …
Faster, Richer, Better: Rapid Appraisal Techniques For The Study Of Is Implementation In Virtual Communities, Linda Wilkins, Paula Swatman, Tanya Castleman
Faster, Richer, Better: Rapid Appraisal Techniques For The Study Of Is Implementation In Virtual Communities, Linda Wilkins, Paula Swatman, Tanya Castleman
The Qualitative Report
A major issue in Information Systems (IS) research is how to combine relevance and rigor (Benbasat & Zmud, 1999) and reduce the widening gap between research results and adoption (Dunn, 1994). Qualitative researchers make use of interpretivist methods to add richness and depth to their understanding of user problems. Interpretivist methods applied to IS implementations can thus result in research which communicates those findings more effectively. However standard interpretivist data-collection and analysis methods can be time-consuming and expensive. Findings based on these methods may be irrelevant to practitioners by the time they reach publication stage. A potential solution to this …
Underwater Women In Shakespeare Films, Charles Ross
Underwater Women In Shakespeare Films, Charles Ross
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper, "Underwater Women in Shakespeare Films," Charles Ross looks at the film tradition of representing the social oppression of women by scenes submersion, a trope that has its literary roots in the classics, the French Middle Ages, the Renaissance, and the novel. Ross argues that unlike classic directors such as Kurosawa, Kozintsev, and Polanski, modern filmmakers not only like to enhance the female body, but also to draw on this trope as a cinematic shorthand to symbolize the oppression of women by various forces. Hollywood films made in the 1990s often go overboard in their attempts to make …
Method Acting And Pacino's Looking For Richard, Peirui Su
Method Acting And Pacino's Looking For Richard, Peirui Su
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her paper, "Method Acting and Pacino's Looking for Richard," Peirui Su explores the influence of method acting on Al Pacino's decision to film Shakespeare's Richard III as an unconventional docudrama. She compares Pacino's film to Laurence Olivier's 1955 film of Richard III and Ian McKellen's 1995 modernized version to show how Pacino's documentary structure solves the problems raised by films that try either to recreate the Elizabethan world or to update Shakespeare, thereby introducing anachronisms. Su argues that Pacino engages US-American audiences by filming interviews and open rehearsals. Su concludes her paper by analyzing the well-known scene of Richard's …
Race And Othello On Film, Laura Reitz-Wilson
Race And Othello On Film, Laura Reitz-Wilson
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Race and Othello on Film," Laura Reitz-Wilson discusses Shakespeare's treatment of race in Othello and compares it to what Hollywood as a producer of culture has done. Reitz-Wilson looks at nine different film versions and analyzes their approaches to Othello's race and character. She parses the historical and textual evidence for racism in Shakespeare's and concludes that it exists and should not be overlooked. Othello's otherness is, in fact, directly connected to his blackness, but Hollywood has rarely captured the tenuous line Shakespeare creates between barbarian and civilized Venetian. Her analysis of the film versions of Othello …

(Wp 2004-01) Inappropriate Pooling Of Wealthy And Poor Countries In Empirical Fdi Studies, Bruce A. Blonigen, Miao Grace Wang
Economics Working Papers
This paper examines the question of whether less-developed countries' (LDCs') experiences with foreign direct investment (FDI) systematically different from those of developed countries (DCs).
We do this by examining three types of empirical FDI studies that typically do not distinguish between LDCs and DCs in their analysis. First, we find that the underlying factors that determine the location of FDI activity across countries vary systematically across LDCs and DCs in a way that is not captured by current empirical models of FDI. Second, the effect of FDI on economic growth is one that is only supported for LDCs in the …

Effects Of Board Structure On Firm Performance: A Comparison Of Japan And Australia, Ingrid Bonn, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This article compares the effects of board size, proportion of female directors, proportion of outside directors and average age of directors on firm performance in Japanese and Australian firms. We found that board size and age of directors were negatively associated with the performance of Japanese firms. For Australian firms, outsider ratio and female director ratio were positively associated with performance.
Entry Mode And Performance In A Transitional Economy: A Framework For Foreign-Invested Enterprises In China, Howard Davies, Jin K. Han, Namwoon Kim, Jae H. Pae
Entry Mode And Performance In A Transitional Economy: A Framework For Foreign-Invested Enterprises In China, Howard Davies, Jin K. Han, Namwoon Kim, Jae H. Pae
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
A conceptual framework is developed, bringing together entry mode, the influence of state officials, and the adoption of a customer-driven orientation in order to explain the performance of foreign-invested firms in a transitional economy. The model is tested on a sample of firms in China across eight provinces and cities, spread across the relatively developed South Coast, the Central Belt formed by Shanghai and the Yangzi basin and the less-developed North and West. We find that the decision to enter through a joint venture reduces the customer focus of the enterprise. Contrary to expectation, however, we find no positive relationship …
"I Think They Discriminated Against Me": Using Prototype Theory And Organizational Justice Theory For Understanding Perceived Discrimination In Selection And Promotion Situations, Michael M. Harris, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye
"I Think They Discriminated Against Me": Using Prototype Theory And Organizational Justice Theory For Understanding Perceived Discrimination In Selection And Promotion Situations, Michael M. Harris, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Research in industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology has generally focused on objective measures of employment discrimination and has virtually neglected individuals' subjective perceptions as to whether a selection or promotion process is discriminatory or not. This paper presents two theoretical models as organizing frameworks to explain candidates' likelihood of perceiving that discrimination has occurred in a certain selection or Promotion situation. The prototype model stresses the importance of the prototypical victim-perpetrator combination, the perceived intention of the decision-maker, and the perceived harm caused as possible antecedents of perceived employment discrimination. In the organizational justice model, procedural, informational, interpersonal, and distributive fairness play …

Surveillance Of The Balto-Finnic Speakers: A Geolinguistic Inquiry, Lindsay E. Gwyther
Surveillance Of The Balto-Finnic Speakers: A Geolinguistic Inquiry, Lindsay E. Gwyther
Honors Theses
The Balto-Finnic languages of northeast Europe are part of the larger Uralic language family. Today, there are seven Balto-Finnic speaking nations, two of which govern their own independent sovereignties (Finland and Estonia). The other five nations lie precariously within the territorial borders of Russia and Latvia for the most part. This paper examines the geographic expanse and status of these languages over time and through space and develops a series of maps to better illustrate these patterns. Historical research demonstrates that their distribution has decreased in area, but strengthened and centralized in certain regions, enabling their presence in a predominantly …
Road Congestion Pricing In Singapore: 1975-2003, Sock-Yong Phang, Rex S. Toh
Road Congestion Pricing In Singapore: 1975-2003, Sock-Yong Phang, Rex S. Toh
Research Collection School Of Economics
Facing traffic congestion in the Central Business District and enormous demands on scarce land resources by the growing number of motor vehicles, Singapore, a small island city-state the size of Seattle, embarked on a bold decision to reduce road congestion by implementing the famous Area Licensing Scheme in 1975. This was a manual system of tolls for multiple entries into the Restricted Zone. While achieving the intended effect of cutting down on the volume of vehicular traffic in the Restricted Zone, the authors (and others) found that the problem of congestion had merely shifted in time and place. Many changes …
