The Douglas County Drug Court: Characteristics Of Participants, Case Outcomes And Recidivism, Cassia Spohn
The Douglas County Drug Court: Characteristics Of Participants, Case Outcomes And Recidivism, Cassia Spohn
Past Publications
The purpose of this report is to describe the characteristics of all offenders (N = 255) who were bound over to Douglas County District Court in 2001 and who were subsequently diverted to the Douglas County Drug Court. We present descriptive data on the characteristics of the drug court participants, focusing on their background characteristics and prior criminal record and on their case characteristics. We also present descriptive data on recidivism for drug court participants and for traditionally adjudicated offenders and compare the recidivism rates of these two groups of offenders, controlling for other predictors of the likelihood of recidivism.
Mapping The Small Arms Trade: Insights From Social Network Analysis, David Todd Kinsella
Mapping The Small Arms Trade: Insights From Social Network Analysis, David Todd Kinsella
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
In recent years, researchers have increasingly turned their attention to the proliferation of small arms, a transnational trade amounting to over $7 billion in value during 2002. Small arms are difficult to track and are not the stuff of military parades, but they are immensely destructive. The trade in small arms should be understood not as a market but as a network, one that shares some important properties with networked forms of organization studied by sociologists. I make this argument and then employ quantitative methods developed for the study of social networks in an effort to show the basic structure …

A Quantilogram Approach To Evaluating Directional Predictability, Oliver B. Linton, Yoon-Jae Whang
A Quantilogram Approach To Evaluating Directional Predictability, Oliver B. Linton, Yoon-Jae Whang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
In this note we propose a simple method of measuring directional predictability and testing for the hypothesis that a given time series has no directional predictability. The test is based on the correlogram of quantile hits. We provide the distribution theory needed to conduct inference, propose some model free upper bound critical values, and apply our methods to stock index return data. The empirical results suggests some directional predictability in returns especially in mid range quantiles like 5%-10%.
An Elementary Discussion Of Commodity Money, Fiat Money And Credit: Part 1, Thomas Quint, Martin Shubik
An Elementary Discussion Of Commodity Money, Fiat Money And Credit: Part 1, Thomas Quint, Martin Shubik
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
In this paper we present a series of models, all within the context of a simple two-good economy, which bring out the distinctions among the different types of money and financial institutions. The models emphasize the physical properties of the economic goods, moneys, and trading systems. Part 1 covers models in which the money is a consumable storable; the economies in Part 2 use durable money, fiat money, or credit. Under this framework we are able to successfully contrast the role of private money lenders, banks, bilateral credit systems, and credit clearinghouses. We are also able to model the importance …
Three Strikes And You’Re Out: Reply To Cooper And Willis, Ricardo J. Caballero, Eduardo Engel
Three Strikes And You’Re Out: Reply To Cooper And Willis, Ricardo J. Caballero, Eduardo Engel
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Cooper and Willis (2003) is the latest in a sequence of criticisms of our methodology for estimating aggregate nonlinearities when microeconomic adjustment is lumpy. Their case is based on “reproducing” our main findings using artificial data generated by a model where microeconomic agents face quadratic adjustment costs. That is, they supposedly find our results where they should not be found. The three claims on which they base their case are incorrect. Their mistakes range from misinterpreting their own simulation results to failing to understand the context in which our procedures should be applied. They also claim that our approach assumes …

Us Dairy Product Trade: Modeling Approaches And The Impact Of New Product Formulations, Charles F. Nicholson, Phillip M. Bishop
Us Dairy Product Trade: Modeling Approaches And The Impact Of New Product Formulations, Charles F. Nicholson, Phillip M. Bishop
Agribusiness
Several domestic and international developments increased interest among the US dairy industry in world markets during the 1990s. One development was the passage of the NAFTA and Uruguay Round (URA) trade agreements in the mid-decade, and their successors, the current “Doha Round” of international trade negotiations now underway. Another development during the 1990s was additional (positive) experience gained by the US dairy industry in export markets. Much of this experience came about because increases in world market prices for butter and powder in 1995-96 made US exports more competitive. The Dairy Export Incentive Program (DEIP) is also credited with improving …

Introducing Dialogue To Graduate Students, Monica W. Tracey, David L. Solomon, James L. Moseley
Administrative and Organizational Studies
Scholars and practitioners in adult education commonly agree on the importance of communication and interaction in the adult classroom. Frequently, however, learners are not provided with guidelines on how to interact and communicate with others in such settings. This paper reports on an experiential orientation to the practice of dialogue for adults in a graduate program
Does Money Matter? By Laurence H. Meyer In Federal Reserve Bank Of St. Louis Review Sept./Oct. 2001: A Review, Gloria A. Joseph-Raji
Does Money Matter? By Laurence H. Meyer In Federal Reserve Bank Of St. Louis Review Sept./Oct. 2001: A Review, Gloria A. Joseph-Raji
Economic and Financial Review
The major objective of the paper was to assess the influence of money and the role of monetarism in shaping the current thinking about macroeconomic modeling and the conduct of Monetary Policy in the United States. The author opined that the monetarist idea that Monetary Policy has responsibility for inflation was now conventional wisdom.
The Role Of Foreign Direct Investment And Natural Resources In Economic Development By Jose De Gregorio: A Review, P. D. Golit
The Role Of Foreign Direct Investment And Natural Resources In Economic Development By Jose De Gregorio: A Review, P. D. Golit
Economic and Financial Review
The paper analyzed the role of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and discussed the part played by natural resources in economic growth. Some of the issues regarding FDI in developing countries were considered, particularly, two issues highlighted in recent discussions and research. The first was whether and through which channels FDI affects economic growth. The second was the impact on economic growth of the exploitation of natural resources, normally developed by foreign investors. The policy implications regarding the treatment of FDI in developing countries were examined.

MassWorks Series, Institute for Community Inclusion
Welcome to MassWorks, our initiative for disability, workforce development, and employment professionals in Massachusetts. All too often, it seems, we work towards the same goals from different sides. With the many day-to day demands of our jobs, it's easy to miss opportunities to share ideas and resources across agencies. The aim of MassWorks is to bring information to workforce and disability professionals who have the goal of improving employment outcomes for Mass. residents with disabilities.

Consortia Purchasing: The Himmelfarb Experience, Patricia Wilson, Anne Linton
Consortia Purchasing: The Himmelfarb Experience, Patricia Wilson, Anne Linton
Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations
Most academic health sciences libraries are faced with either zero growth or shrinking budgets. At the same time, faculty, staff, and students are demanding access to more and more resources, and libraries are expected to support students in new and expanding programs in areas such as public health and genetics. The format of choice is electronic, and 24/7 service from any location is the expectation. The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library found it was necessary to build a series of strategic alliances to meet these new demands in difficult financial times. Alliances have been formed with campus libraries, campus academic support …
