Development Of A Multidimensional Scale To Measure Attitudes Toward Workers With A Disability, John Kegley Mar 2004

Development Of A Multidimensional Scale To Measure Attitudes Toward Workers With A Disability, John Kegley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Existing measures of attitudes toward individuals with a disability have been shown to suffer from several shortcomings in their application in organizational settings. Indirect measurement has been beyond the scope of most organizations due to the complex and expensive implementation of these methods. Direct measures have been shown to be susceptible to threats to internal validity, such as reactivity and socially desirable responding. Further, existing direct measures have focused on unidimensional aspects of attitudes toward individuals with disabilities. Research, however, has demonstrated that attitudes are multidimensional in nature. There is a need for a multidimensional scale to tap those underlying …

Relationships Between Personality And Individual Perceptions Of Social Cohesion, James Garrett Mar 2004

Relationships Between Personality And Individual Perceptions Of Social Cohesion, James Garrett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research explored personality correlates of social cohesion. Groups of two were given a task to perform that required cooperation between the two team members. This task exposed each team member to the other's personality. Upon completion of the task, the individual perceptions of social cohesion were assessed by each individual. We hypothesized that extraversion, emotional stability, and agreeableness of one team member will correlate positively with the other team member's perception of social cohesion. These hypotheses were not supported. However an exploratory analysis showed that an individual's level of extraversion and conscientiousness were positively correlated to that same individual's …

World Bank Project Performance Assessment Report: Croatia, Emergency Transport And Mine Clearing Project, Gichd . Mar 2004

World Bank Project Performance Assessment Report: Croatia, Emergency Transport And Mine Clearing Project, Gichd .

Global CWD Repository

The Emergency Transport and Mine Clearing Project, approved in 1996, covered the first phase of a larger reconstruction program following the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, ensuing hostilities, and the subsequent Dayton peace agreement (signed in December 1995). The project objectives were to repair and reconstruct the surface transport networks within Croatia, especially those leading to Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), and clear landmines specifically in areas of high economic priority for reconstruction, starting with the transport networks. While the transport component was straightforward with established agencies, mine clearing was complex because no established organization existed to handle the work in …

Differences In Response To Hypoxia In The Three-Spined Stickleback From Lotic And Lentic Localities: Dominance And An Anaerobic Metabolite, L. U. Sneddon, J. Yerbury Mar 2004

Differences In Response To Hypoxia In The Three-Spined Stickleback From Lotic And Lentic Localities: Dominance And An Anaerobic Metabolite, L. U. Sneddon, J. Yerbury

Aquaculture Collection

Dominance hierarchies of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus from river and pond populations were subjected to hypoxia (20%, range±1%). Under hypoxia, the hierarchies were less stable in terms of rank position and tissue L-lactate was higher in river fish than pond fish under normoxia and hypoxia. Dominant fish gained mass under normoxia but lost mass under hypoxic conditions possibly due to them maintaining high levels of aggression.

A Critical Assessment Of Protection For Key Wildlife And Salmon Habitats Under The Proposed British Columbia Central Coast Land And Resource Management Plan, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont, R. John Nelson, Katrina Bennett Mar 2004

A Critical Assessment Of Protection For Key Wildlife And Salmon Habitats Under The Proposed British Columbia Central Coast Land And Resource Management Plan, Paul C. Paquet, Chris T. Darimont, R. John Nelson, Katrina Bennett

Habitat Assessment and Management Collection

The Central Coast Land and Resource Management Plan (CCLRMP) table recently declared a consensus1 on proposed protected areas for British Columbia’s Central Coast. This region is recognized for its globally rare and largely intact mainland and island ecosystems and land use decisions should reflect this importance. We evaluated the efficacy of this proposal using a spatial assessment of habitat. We focus on protected areas in the context of the overall CCLRMP. We examined the level of protection provided by the CCLRMP in three key coastal habitats: deer winter range, wolf reproductive habitat, and salmon reproductive and rearing habitat. Assessment of …

A Neurocomputational Model Of Analogical Reasoning And Its Breakdown In Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration, Robert G. Morrison, Daniel C. Krawczyk, Keith J. Holyoak, John E. Hummel, Tiffany Chow, Bruce L. Miller, Barbara J. Knowlton Mar 2004

A Neurocomputational Model Of Analogical Reasoning And Its Breakdown In Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration, Robert G. Morrison, Daniel C. Krawczyk, Keith J. Holyoak, John E. Hummel, Tiffany Chow, Bruce L. Miller, Barbara J. Knowlton

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Analogy is important for learning and discovery and is considered a core component of intelligence. We present a computational account of analogical reasoning that is compatible with data we have collected from patients with cortical degeneration of either their frontal or anterior temporal cortices due to frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD). These two patient groups showed different deficits in picture and verbal analogies: frontal lobe FTLD patients tended to make errors due to impairments in working memory and inhibitory abilities, whereas temporal lobe FTLD patients tended to make errors due to semantic memory loss. Using the ‘‘Learning and Inference with Schemas …

Vertical Structure And Strategic Environmental Trade Policy, Stephen F. Hamilton, Till Requate Mar 2004

Vertical Structure And Strategic Environmental Trade Policy, Stephen F. Hamilton, Till Requate

Economics

The idea that environmental trade policy can be used to achieve competitive advantage in international markets has important implications for the way we conceive free trade. This paper considers strategic environmental policy in a model that makes explicit the vertical structure that supports production of the traded good. Including intranational vertical relationships in the analysis of strategic environmental trade policy has substantial qualitative effects. When vertical contracts are allowed, the optimal policy to levy on a polluting input under both quantity and price competition in the international market is the Pigouvian tax.

Fish Stock And Fishery Enhancement In Western Australia. A Summary Report., Department Of Fisheries Mar 2004

Fish Stock And Fishery Enhancement In Western Australia. A Summary Report., Department Of Fisheries

Fisheries Management Papers

This summary paper provides an overview of the key proposals set out in the full policy discussion paper, Fisheries Management Paper No 175. It does not discuss the theoretical background for the framework presented and therefore readers interested in such discussion are directed to Fisheries Management Paper No 175.

Both papers have been prepared to encourage public involvement in the development of policy for stock enhancement within Western Australian waters. Stock enhancement can involve an existing fishery or creation of a new fishery through the translocation of fish. It affects both public and private waters.

Gender And Cosmos Emplaced: Women's Houses And Men's Houses In Bariai, West New Britain, Papua New Guinea, Naomi Mcpherson

Pacific Studies

In Papua New Guinea, the men's cult houses are dramatic examples of vernacular architecture that have overshadowed the importance and symbolic meanings of the domestic dwelling, or women's houses. This essay is an ethnography of house forms, specifically women's houses and men's cult houses in Bariai, West New Britain. The focus is on relationships of articulation between the built environment and gender concepts within the framework of Bariai cosmology, which show how gender concepts and relations are emplaced and the built environment is gendered.

The Relationship Between Stress, Satisfaction, And Emotional Intelligence In College Students, Jessica Largen Mar 2004

The Relationship Between Stress, Satisfaction, And Emotional Intelligence In College Students, Jessica Largen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The relationship between stress and satisfaction has been well documented. However, little is known about the possible mediating effect that emotional intelligence may have on that relationship. This study addressed the role emotional intelligence plays between stress and satisfaction. By collecting measures of stress, life satisfaction, satisfaction with school, and emotional intelligence, this researcher examined the question "Does emotional intelligence serve as a moderator in the relationship between satisfaction and stress?" Results indicated that, after removing the effects of stress, emotional intelligence and satisfaction demonstrated a positive significant relationship. Emotional intelligence was related to the Big Five factors of Conscientiousness, …

Termination Of Supplemental Security Income Benefits For Drug Addiction And Alcoholism: Results Of A Longitudinal Study Of The Effects On Former Beneficiaries, James A. Swartz, Jim Baumohl, Arthur J. Lurigio Mar 2004

Termination Of Supplemental Security Income Benefits For Drug Addiction And Alcoholism: Results Of A Longitudinal Study Of The Effects On Former Beneficiaries, James A. Swartz, Jim Baumohl, Arthur J. Lurigio

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article reviews the results of a multisite cohort study on effects of terminating Supplemental Security Income benefits for drug addiction and alcoholism. Within 2 years of the program's termination, 35 - 43 percent of participants requalified for disability benefits for another impairment. Regardless of requalification status, substance abuse treatment participation declined sharply and illegal drug use was prevalent. Although many of those who did not requalify lost income, medical benefits, and housing, these losses lessened over time and were not associated with increased psychological or medical problems or with declines in other aspects of participants' lives.

Fishing Lifestyles: ‘Territorians’, Traditional Owners And The Management Of Recreational Fishing In Kakadu National Park, Lisa Palmer Mar 2004

Fishing Lifestyles: ‘Territorians’, Traditional Owners And The Management Of Recreational Fishing In Kakadu National Park, Lisa Palmer

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

The relationships between traditional Aboriginal land owners and other Park users in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory are characterised by competing agendas and competing ideas about appropriate ways of relating to the environment. Similarly, the management of recreational fishing in the Park is permeated by the tensions and opposition of contested ideas and perspectives from non-Aboriginal fishers and Aboriginal traditional owners. The local know- ledge and rights of ‘Territorians’ [non-Aboriginal Northern Territory residents] are continually pitted against the local knowledge and rights of Aboriginal tra- ditional owners. Under these circumstances, debates between non-Aboriginal fishers and Aboriginal traditional owners …
