Beyond Ethical Leadership: Striving For Authentic Leadership In A New Corporate Context, Mark N. Langseth
Beyond Ethical Leadership: Striving For Authentic Leadership In A New Corporate Context, Mark N. Langseth
Theses and Graduate Projects
Recent corporate scandals in the U.S. - at Enron, WorldCom, Arthur Andersen, and elsewhere - have prompted renewed interest in business ethics. Consistent with the vast majority of organizational leadership literature, however, this new interest in ethics is overwhelmingly focused on the internal practices of corporations. In both the modern organizational leadership literature and recent literature regarding corporate ethics, very little attention has been given to examining leadership from the perspective of the ultimate societal (external) impact of either an organization's products/services or the processes by which they are produced. This essay presents a model of "authentic leadership" in which …

A Season Of Hope, C. William Pollard
A Season Of Hope, C. William Pollard
C. William Pollard Papers
Reflecting on how both Christians and Jews are "prisoners of hope" during Christmas and Hanukkah, Pollard offers his audience a hopeful vision of business, one in which management's servant leadership leads to a positive corporate ethos. Such leadership can, he argues, help to create organizations that are not just profit-driven but also morally conscious.

Nebraska Hospital Preparedness For Psychological Consequences Of Public Health Emergencies (Survey Results Summary), Denise Bulling
Nebraska Hospital Preparedness For Psychological Consequences Of Public Health Emergencies (Survey Results Summary), Denise Bulling
University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
The University of Nebraska Public Policy Center recently surveyed hospitals across Nebraska to evaluate behavioral health readiness in the event of a disaster, act of terrorism (including bioterrorism) or other mass-casualty incident. The survey also asked about hospitals’ ability to effectively coordinate with other emergency service providers, such as law enforcement, in the event of a critical incident.
Behavioral health readiness refers to a hospital’s capacity to effectively manage and respond to the psychological needs of patients, staff, and their families resulting from a large scale event or emergency. In many hospitals in Nebraska this capacity is not maintained internally …

In June 1998, the Board of Education of the School District of Philadelphia passed a resolution mandating that all students demonstrate citizenship competencies by completing a service-learning project for promotion to grades 5 and 9 and for high school graduation. This resolution, part of Children Achieving–– Philadelphia’s education reform plan––launched an initiative supporting service-learning practice on an unprecedented scale for one school district.
Four years later, the District had formed partnerships with over 250 community agencies, trained 2,400 teachers in the philosophy and methodology of service-learning, and leveraged approximately $20 million per year in financial and in-kind resources to support …

Community Capital: More Than Just Money, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel
Community Capital: More Than Just Money, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel
Cornhusker Economics
When you think of the word, capital, dollars or money probably comes to mind. What if I told you there were at least six kinds of capital within every community? Capital is more than just... capital. Cornelia and Jan Flora, in their recent book, Rural Communities: Legacy and Change (2003), identify several kinds of capital that are present in varying degrees in all communities. You might think of it as layers on an onion, with each layer relying on the next (Figure 1). These layers of capital are the building blocks or assets within communities. These common elements can be …

Igniting Concern About Refugee Injustice, Sharon Callaghan, Brian Martin
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
Injustice is a prominent theme in the news but there is far less attention to how to be effective in opposing it. For activists, it is crucial to understand how reactions against injustice can be ignited and/or inhibited. Injustice towards refugees provides a revealing case study.
