Social Ethics: Sociology and the Future of Society provides a complex yet accessible statement of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's mature sociological theory of ethical life. Her perspective is welded intellectually to sociology and evolutionary thought and concretely to the well-being of children throughout the world. We have failed, writes Gilman in Social Ethics, to teach even "a simple, child-convincing ethics based on social interactions, because we have not understood sociology" (emphasis added). Coping With Work-School Conflict Through Social Support, Kyle Gerjerts

In the present study, we extended previous research by examining both the primary appraisal and buffering functions of social support on work-school conflict. Moreover, we looked at social support from both supervisors and coworkers. We also advanced the literature by examining two previously unexamined consequences of work-school conflict. We measured job satisfaction as a psychological indicator of strain and somatic complaints as a physical indicator of strain. We viewed work-school conflict as a stressor and predicted that higher levels of it would be related to lower job satisfaction and more somatic complaints. The reference to foreign court judgments by the US Supreme Courts - particularly in cases involving the US Constitution - has sparked controversy. This controversy flared in Lawrence v. Texas, where Justice Scalia criticized Justice Kennedy for reference to judgments by the European Court of Human Rights in Justice Kennedy's majority opinion striking down the Texas sodomy statute. This article examines the issue from a different perspective: references to 'foreign' court judgments (including US Supreme Court opinions) by the Supreme Court of Ireland. Objective. Most research on child abuse in Tanzania and Kenya is unpublished in the international literature. The purpose of this paper is to examine the various commentaries and reports extant, towards an overview of the nature and frequency of child sexual abuse in Tanzania and Kenya. Methods. Contacts were made with academics, government departments, NGOs and UN agencies. This was followed by a field trip in the summer of 2001 where all available reports were examined and a wide range of interviews conducted. Results. Purpose:One risk associated with epilepsy surgery is memory loss, but perhaps more important is how patients perceive changes in their memories. This longitudinal study evaluated changes in memory self-reports and investigated how self-reports relate to changes on objective memory measures in temporal or extratemporal epilepsy patients who underwent surgery.

Methods: Objective memory (Wechsler Memory Scale–Revised) and subjective memory self-reports (Memory Assessment Clinics Self-Rating Scale) were individually assessed for 136 patients ∼6 months before and 6 months after surgery. A measure of depressive affect (Beck Depression Inventory–2nd Edition) was used to control variance attributable to emotional distress.

Sexual boundary violations by clergy have received heightened media attention in recent years with far reaching implications for the long-term well-being of the Church as an institution. While much has been written about the causes and implications of sexual misconduct by clergy, very little research has addressed preventative efforts. The importance of research training at explicitly Christian doctoral programs is suggested on the basis of four reasons: the need to hold science and practice together, the need for skills to evaluate interventions, the need to serve a society with a growing interest in religion and spirituality, and the need to assess the effectiveness of explicitly Christian doctoral programs. A discussion of these issues serves as an introduction to the rest of this special issue that focuses on research training at seven explicitly Christian programs.

Some in social work have called for a paradigm shift away from a focus on problems to a focus on strengths, empowerment, and capacity building. This call sets up an unnatural dichotomy, asking social workers to identify with one side or another. In this article, we review social work history to argue that the best social work practice has always maintained a dual focus on both problems and capacity building. Throughout our history, those who championed a problem-oriented practice also emphasized strengths and growing client capacity, and today's strength-based, capacity-oriented practitioners typically advocate for the solving of consumer's presenting problems.

This map of Utah's Southwest features a cartographic illustration created by draping four cross-blended hypsometric tint ramps over a grayscale hillshade. A hypsometric tint ramp is essentially a blend of one or more colors that is associated with an elevation range. A cross-blended hypsometric tint derived image consists of two or more color ramps with at least one ramp presenting the terrain in a "dry" condition and the other in a "moist" or vegetated condition. The addition of a satellite image derived vegetation index allows vegetation colors to appear where the terrain is vegetated irrespective of elevation.

Marine fisheries and fishing societies develop around the resources provided by a particular ecosystem. As they exploit these resources, fisheries transform the ecosystem, which pushes fishery and society to adapt in turn. This process is illustrated by fisheries, ecological and social data tracking dramatic changes on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula and its adjacent marine ecosystem, the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence. There a longstanding fishery for cod and other groundfish collapsed in the 1990s, and was replaced by fisheries targeting invertebrates. The new invertebrate fisheries have different socioeconomic characteristics than the former groundfish fisheries. The shift in target species reflects deep …

Hortaliza: A Youth "Nutrition" Garden In Southwest Detroit, Kameshwari Pothukuchi

This paper documents a youth garden that was developed in 2000 through a university-community partnership in a low-income, predominantly Latino neighborhood in southwest Detroit. It involved four community-based organizations and several residents -- youth among them -- from the neighborhood, in garden planning, set-up, and management. Kids grew vegetables of different kinds to take home and ate healthy snacks at the garden. They learned about the importance of vegetables and fruits to healthy diets, the nutritional value of particular vegetables, and how to grow vegetables. At the end of the season, we documented increased interest among kids in eating fruits …

Religious Switching Does Parents' Education Matter?, Amy Adamczyk

How are switching to more liberal religious preferences and apostasy affected by educational attainment? Previous research has focused on the relationship between religious adherence and college attendance. In this paper, I extend this work by looking at whether differences between parent and child educational attainment affect later religious devotion among respondents who at one time were Protestant. Using data from the 1998 General Social Survey, I test whether conservative religious commitment among college-educated children with less educated parents is different from commitment among the college-educated children of educated parents. Findings reveal that respondents who have earned an associate’s degree, but …

The Metabolic Syndrome poses an important public health threat to the U.S. health care delivery system. Disparate access to quality health care makes African Americans (blacks) especially susceptible to the adverse effects of MS. Although direct evidence suggests that early treatment of MS risk factors saves lives, no study to date has compared the cost effectiveness of such measures in blacks and the general population. Interventions that promote early treatment of MS risk factors may improve public health but could also lead to excess costs that are ultimately borne by society. Momentum Strategies Versus Directional Momentum Strategies: A Comparative Study With Stocks, Zi Ning

In replicating the study by Akhbari and Gressis (2002) in mutual funds, this paper compares the profitability of traditional momentum strategy with the directional momentum strategies in stock markets. Not only the past quarterly return but also the patterns of monthly returns within a quarter are considered. The evidence shows that the raw return findings are similar to the findings in mutual fund study. However, the risk- adjusted returns are not consistent with the raw returns and statistically insignificant, very probably, due to the extremely small sample size.

This paper presents findings from the Illinois Hispanic Family Profile and from Latino Consortium Round Table discussions regarding the unique linguistic, cultural and transnational issues present in child welfare practice with Latino families. To provide a knowledge base for program planning and casework with Latino families, this paper describes the Latino population as a whole, the characteristics of Latino children and families involved with the child welfare system, and innovative Latino child welfare initiatives in Illinois. Policy, practice, and research implications and recommendations are presented.

In this interview, Norman J. Groetzinger discusses major trends and challenges in community men- tal health since 1975 when he became executive director of the Counseling Center of Lake View, in a Chicago neighborhood. He places these trends in broa der state and federal contexts and illustrates how mental health agencies and the Counseling Center of Lake View, in particular, have responded to these challenges. Many times persons with mental illn ess were better served as a result, but at times the changes ended up complicating how professionals go about doing their work.
