De-Platonizing And Democratizing Education As The Bases Of Service Learning, Ira Harkavy, Lee Benson Apr 1998

De-Platonizing And Democratizing Education As The Bases Of Service Learning, Ira Harkavy, Lee Benson

Service Learning, General

The theoretical bases of academic service learning are examined, with particular attention to John Dewey’s contributions. The service learning movement is conceptualized as part of an ongoing—and still unsuccessful—effort to “de-Platonize” and democratize American higher education in particular and American schooling in general.

What Are Students Learning?: Assessing Service Learning And The Curriculum, Kathryn Blash Cumbo, Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur

Service Learning, General

Service learning, a method of learning and teaching, has the potential to move our educational system into the 21st century by providing a vehicle for integrating the needs of schools and communities while reflecting current reform agendas and providing meaningful learning experiences for students. In order for service learning to play a role in the transformation of our schools, however, educators must become successful at linking service to learning- making connections between service experiences and academic learning explicit. This paper explores the meaning of learning in service learning by explicating: a) how service learning links to current standards based reform …

Weaving Service-Learning Into The Fabric Of Your College, Nan Ottenritter, C. David Lisman Apr 1998

Weaving Service-Learning Into The Fabric Of Your College, Nan Ottenritter, C. David Lisman

Higher Education

Institutionalizing service-learning can be a rich and complex process. The following ideas about sustainability are offered as points to keep in mind as we go about getting service-learning programs more solidly grounded within our institutions. We've organized our ideas into the following categories: institutional mission, faculty outcomes, student outcomes, community impact, coordination of services, and advancement of the field. Most topics are accompanied by a checklist and "thought prompts." The checklist provides a guide for improving service-learning programs from the perspective of many different constituencies across an institution. The thought prompts are key words that frequently surface in discussions about …

Cross-Cultural Field Placements: Student Teachers Learning From Schools And Communities, Laura L. Stachowski, James M. Mahan Apr 1998

Cross-Cultural Field Placements: Student Teachers Learning From Schools And Communities, Laura L. Stachowski, James M. Mahan

Higher Education

The student teaching experience is typically characterized by a collaboration of school and university-cooperating teacher and university supervisor- to prepare novice educators for the instructional, managerial, and disciplinary demands of classroom teaching. Less often are individuals and groups outside of the immediate school environment perceived as active and important contributors to learning outcomes and professional development for student teachers. However, an increasing number of teacher educators are addressing the role of the community in providing student teachers with information and insights that will enhance the classroom experience in vital ways.

A Pedagogy For Citizenship: Service Learning And Democratic Education, Meta Mendel-Reyes Apr 1998

A Pedagogy For Citizenship: Service Learning And Democratic Education, Meta Mendel-Reyes

Higher Education

Maria clutches the papers tightly. After over two hours of waiting through reports, announcements, awards, and other agenda items that seemed much less urgent than hers, the chance to speak has nearly arrived. She looks at the determined face of the African American woman seated beside her, one of several residents living across the street from a trash incinerator that has brought pollution, disease, noise, and rats to their quiet neighborhood. At last, they would have the opportunity to tell their story to elected officials who could do something about it. Maria glances down at the statistics that took her …

The Effects Of Pretherapy Information On The Client's Perception Of A Counselor's Values And Receptiveness To Treatment, James C. Thomas Apr 1998

The Effects Of Pretherapy Information On The Client's Perception Of A Counselor's Values And Receptiveness To Treatment, James C. Thomas

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Over the past thirty years there has been a growing awareness in the psychological community that a counselor's personal values, including religious values, influences the therapy relationship. Despite this awareness, few counselors have made it a practice of sharing their value orientation with their clients. One way of helping clients make informed choices about whether they want to enter therapy with a certain counselor is to give them information before therapy begins about a counselor's personal values that may influence the therapy relationship. This study partially replicates the work of Lewis and Epperson ( l 991) and shows that pre …

Sociometric Status And Aggression As Predictive Of Childhood Conflict, Laura Warren '98 Apr 1998

Sociometric Status And Aggression As Predictive Of Childhood Conflict, Laura Warren '98

Honors Projects

Following recent trends in the study of children's conflict, researchers compared relationship strength between conflict resolution style and the personal variables of aggression and sociometric status. Participants consisted of 136 fourth-and fifth-grade students, who completed assessments measuring sociometric status and aggression, as well as reports on both hypothetical and real-life conflict resolution styles. Results revealed aggression levels to be more strongly associated with antisocial styles of conflict management, while sociometric status was a stronger predictor of assertive styles of resolution. In contrast to previous research, children's reported use of prosocial methods was consistent across all measures of conflict. Implications of …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Factors Driving Intermodal Transportation Usage, Philip T. Evers, Carol J. Emerson Apr 1998

An Exploratory Analysis Of Factors Driving Intermodal Transportation Usage, Philip T. Evers, Carol J. Emerson

Journal of Transportation Management

The purpose of this study is to investigate certain aspects of a transportation choice model proposed by Krapfel and Mentzer (1982) pertaining to the influence of shipper perceptions on the selection of a mode. Specifically, this study attempts to identify the impact that shipper perceptions of intermodal and over-the-road truck service, as well as other characteristics of the shipper, have on intermodal usage. The research findings support the notion that shipper perceptions affect modal usage and indicate areas in which intermodal providers should focus their attention to improve intermodal usage.

Union Pacific/Southern Pacific Merger: Impact On Shippers, Paul D. Larson, H Barry Spraggins Apr 1998

Union Pacific/Southern Pacific Merger: Impact On Shippers, Paul D. Larson, H Barry Spraggins

Journal of Transportation Management

In the Summer of ‘96, Union Pacific Railroad merged with Southern Pacific to create the largest American railroad. Controversy continues to surround the merger. This paper reports results of a recent merger-impact survey. Survey respondents were rail and intermodal shippers. Among the interesting research findings are the following: (1) while shippers report a negative impact due to less rail competition, trackage rights granted to Burlington Northern/Santa Fe have failed to dampen this impact; (2) railroad service has deteriorated, but freight rates have remained stable; and (3) service problems are more severe for rail, as opposed to TOFC/COFC, shippers.

Linking To Full Texts, Carol Tenopir Apr 1998

Linking To Full Texts, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

IT HAS BECOME routine for librarians to help a patron compile a comprehensive customized bibliography from online or CD-ROM indexes. In fact, patrons no longer consider it sufficient to compile a list of resources. Although searching indexes and abstracts was never the end of the information seeking process, in the print world an index search was so tedious that users focused energy on the search process. Interlibrary loan could suffice for articles the library didn't hold. Now, as library users become familiar with the convenience of online searching and their expectations rise, they expect instantaneous access to full articles.

Economic Cost Models Of Scientific Scholarly Journals, Donald W. King, Carol Tenopir Apr 1998

Economic Cost Models Of Scientific Scholarly Journals, Donald W. King, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper summarizes costs of publishing scientific scholarly journals. Activities are described for five publishing components: article processing (e.g., manuscript processing, editing , composition, etc.), non-article processing (i.e. similar activities related to covers, tables-of-content, letters, book reviews, etc.), reproduction (e.g., printing, collating, binding, etc.), distribution (e.g., wrapping, labeling, sorting, mailing, subscription maintenance, etc.), and support (e.g., marketing, administration, finance, etc.). A model is derived for each of these components consisting of cost parameters (e.g., number of issues, pages, subscriptions, etc.) and cost elements (e.g., cost per page of editing, set-up cost per issue, postage cost per issue copy mailed, etc.). …
