Pastoral Resources And Their Management In The Sandstone-Yalgoo-Paynes Find Area, Western Australia, A M E Van Vreeswyk, P. T. Godden
Agriculture reports
This report covers about 94,700 square kilometres of rangelands in the Sandstone-Yalgoo-Paynes Find area of Western Australia. The area lies within 27°S and 30°S latitudes, and 115°30'E and 120°E longitudes and includes the towns of Sandstone, Yalgoo and Paynes Find. The northern, southern, and eastern limits of the survey area are largely defined by the boundaries of the 1:250,000 scale series map sheets. The western limit is the boundary between the pastoral and agricultural area.

Cheap Talk And Co-Ordination With Payoff Uncertainty, Sandeep Baliga, Stephen Morris
Cheap Talk And Co-Ordination With Payoff Uncertainty, Sandeep Baliga, Stephen Morris
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Two players seek to co-ordinate their behavior in an incomplete information setting. We show that if each player’s preferences over his opponent’s action is independent of his own action or type, then cheap talk cannot expand the set of equilibrium outcomes.
A Theory Of The Onset Of Currency Attacks, Stephen Morris, Hyun Song Shin
A Theory Of The Onset Of Currency Attacks, Stephen Morris, Hyun Song Shin
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The swiftness and devastating impact of recent financial crises have taken many market participants by surprise, and pose challenges for economists seeking a theory of the onset of a crisis. We propose such a theory based on two features. The actions of diverse economic actors which undermine the currency are mutually reinforcing, while the fragmented nature of the media create small disparities in their information. In such circumstances, the beliefs of market participants can be tracked in the same way as the economic fundamentals, and an attack is triggered when the economic fundamentals deteriorate sufficiently to fall below the minimum …
Temporary Employment: The Spanish Experience, Catalina Amuedo-Dorantes
Temporary Employment: The Spanish Experience, Catalina Amuedo-Dorantes
Dissertations
In an effort to promote employment flexibility and reduce the unemployment rate, Spanish authorities deregulated temporary employment in the early 1980s. Nonetheless, the deregulation of temporary employment took place at the margin, favoring the development of a dual labor market in which temporary workers constituted a second class of workers involuntarily employed and enduring limited advancement opportunities.
Using data from the Spanish labor force survey, Spanish temporary employment and job transitions into and out of temporary employment are examined. The study first evaluates the incidence of Spanish temporary employment and its involuntary and demand-led character. Secondly, the analysis reveals temporary …
Estimating Yield Curves By Kernel Smoothing Methods, Oliver B. Linton, E. Mammen, Jens Perch Nielsen, C. Tanggaard
Estimating Yield Curves By Kernel Smoothing Methods, Oliver B. Linton, E. Mammen, Jens Perch Nielsen, C. Tanggaard
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We introduce a new method for the estimation of discount functions, yield curves and forward curves for coupon bonds. Our approach is nonparametric and does not assume a particular functional form for the discount function although we do show how to impose various important restrictions in the estimation. Our method is based on kernel smoothing and is defined as the minimum of some localized population moment condition. The solution to the sample problem is not explicit and our estimation procedure is iterative, rather like the backfitting method of estimating additive nonparametric models. We establish the asymptotic normality of our methods …
Dynamic Common Agency, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki
Dynamic Common Agency, Dirk Bergemann, Juuso Välimäki
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We consider a general model of dynamic common agency with symmetric information. We focus on Markov perfect equilibria and characterize the equilibrium set for a refinement of the Markov perfect equilibria. Particular attention is given to the existence of a marginal contribution equilibrium where each principal receives her contribution to the coalition of agent and remaining principals. The structure of the intertemporal payoffs is analyzed in terms of the flow marginal contribution. As a byproduct, new results for the static common agency game are obtained. The general characterization results are then applied to two dynamic bidding games for a common …

Portable Wood Burning Camp Stove: United States Patent, John B. Hall Professor
Portable Wood Burning Camp Stove: United States Patent, John B. Hall Professor
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Portable camp stove, wherein solid-fuel, especially of dried tree and bush twigs, is burned upon a supporting fuel grate positioned at bottom of a combustion-chamber. Solid-fuel is added directly into the combustion-chamber during operation through alligned stoke holes in a chimney and a vented-fire-ring, and then dropped vertically downward through an exhaust vent. Air for primary combustion is drawn into the combustion-chamber through a ring of intake apertures adjacent to and above the stove's bottom plate. Stove's outer wall is spaced apart from the wall of the combustion-chamber and the two walls are joined together and sealed by a top …

Do All The Resource Problems In The West Begin In The East?, Jason Shogren
Jason Shogren
Economics can make good policy better and bad policy go away - a message often constrained by the political realities surrounding federal resource policy toward the West. This essay responds to these challenges to economic reasoning based on the lessons learned after a stay at the Council of Economic Advisers. My goal is to help make apolitical economists more effective advocates of efficiency.

Returns To Public Investments In Agriculture With Imperfect Downstream Competition, Stephen F. Hamilton, David L. Sunding
Returns To Public Investments In Agriculture With Imperfect Downstream Competition, Stephen F. Hamilton, David L. Sunding
Economics
A multiple-market framework is developed to measure the size and distribution of research benefits. The model considers an upstream raw product market and a downstream finished product market and allows for imperfect competition in the intermediary food-processing sector. A central conceptual result is derived: an increase in raw product output is a sufficient condition for cost- reducing innovations in the farm sector to increase social welfare. A special case of linear farm supply and isoelastic processing production functions reveals that necessary conditions for welfare to decrease are a convergent farm supply shift, an oligopsonistic upstream market configuration, and increasing returns-to-scale …

Fiat Money And The Efficient Financing Of The Float, Production And Consumption. Part I: The Float, Martin Shubik
Fiat Money And The Efficient Financing Of The Float, Production And Consumption. Part I: The Float, Martin Shubik
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The basic distinction in the optimization conditions between the general equilibrium model of a T period exchange economy and a strategic market game process model is between a set of equations homogeneous of order zero and a set of nonhomogeneous equations. The latter have an amount M of outside or fiat money added to the system. If there is an outside bank willing to lend or accept deposits at an interest rate rho > 0 at the end of time T the initial amount of money M will have been consumed in interest payments to the outside bank. The price level …
Residential Choices And Prospective Risks Of Nursing Home Entry, Kenneth A. Couch, Duke Kao
Residential Choices And Prospective Risks Of Nursing Home Entry, Kenneth A. Couch, Duke Kao
Center for Policy Research
Nationally representative estimates of the prospective risk of entry into a nursing home and the likelihood of residing in a nursing home are obtained using data from the Longitudinal Study of Aging: 1984-1990. The roles of demographic characteristics, kin availability, and health status in determining entry into and residence in nursing homes is examined. Caregivers facilitate community residence and reduce the risk of nursing home entry for those with functional limitations. Dementia in combination with functional limitations increases the risk of nursing home entry.
Traditionality, Modernity, And Household Composition: Parent-Child Coresidence In Contemporary Turkey, Hakan Aykan, Douglas A. Wolf
Traditionality, Modernity, And Household Composition: Parent-Child Coresidence In Contemporary Turkey, Hakan Aykan, Douglas A. Wolf
Center for Policy Research
We investigate the patterns and correlates of currently married adult children’s coresidence with their parents in Turkey, using data from the 1993 Turkish Demographic and Health Survey. We are particularly interested in “traditional” patterns of coresidence—that is, coresidence with one or both of the husband’s parents—and the effects of variables measuring traditionality at the individual and contextual levels on coresidence with any parent, and with the husband’s parents. The results indicate that coresidence among currently married children is not the norm. However, the odds of coresidence with the husband’s parents, given that a couple coresides with any parent, are very …
