Anorexia Nervosa And Bulimia Nervosa: The Patients' Perspective, Benita J. Quakenbush

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Eating-disorder clients show low motivation, poor follow-through, and inordinate premature dropout rates in treatment. To date, little research has been conducted that might provide clinicians with an understanding of the critical factors that may aid clients' recovery. Such factors may be used by clinicians to better motivate clients to collaborate in treatment. The purpose of this study was to identify some of the critical factors that women with eating disorders believed were crucial in prompting or facilitating their recovery. Identification of these factors was accomplished through a systematic content analysis of semistructured interviews with recovered or recovering bulimics and anorexics. …

The Relationships Of Gender And Age With Peer Acceptance In Primary-Grade, Multiage Classrooms At Edith Bowen Laboratory School, Thomas Anthony Shuster

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study describes the effects of gender and age on peer acceptance in primary-grade, multiage classrooms at Edith Bowen Laboratory School at Utah State University. The population described consisted of six multiage classrooms composed of male and female students from 6 to 8 years old. The classrooms were approximately balanced by gender and age. Students spent the entire day and received all instruction in the multiage setting.

Students completed "Work With" and "Play With" sociometric rating-scale instruments. For both instruments, results revealed the existence of "gender cleavage"--both genders preferred work and play partners of their own gender. In general, age …

Perceived Children's Characteristics And Other Factors Relating To Parents' Psychological Well-Being In Midlife, Catherine D. Stogner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research examined child-parent relationships from the perspective of the psychological well-being of parents during midlife and while launching children. A subsample of 1,253 parents from the National Survey of Families and Households was studied using variables from both waves (1988 and 1993) of longitudinal data. Fathers and mothers were analyzed separately for depression and self-satisfaction at the second wave (1993) in relation to their< perceptions of child, adjustment and child-parent relationships in 1988, and parents' employment and their marital status in 1993.

Analyses showed that fathers' depression scores in 1 g93 were significantly related to fathers' perceptions of child adjustment (total and positive), and fathers' age, marital, and employment status. Mothers' depression scores were associated with their …

Fulfillment Of Marital Expectations In Relation To Communication Style And Parents' Marital Interactions, Shawn Corey Edgington May 1996

Fulfillment Of Marital Expectations In Relation To Communication Style And Parents' Marital Interactions, Shawn Corey Edgington

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships of communication variables and parent marital variables with the fulfillment of marital expectations among newlyweds. Little research has been done on newlywed expectations and communication. This is an exploratory study conducted to determine how newlyweds' exposure to parents' marital interactions and communication styles correlated with newlyweds' fulfillment of marital expectations. Fifty newlywed couples (married 3-6 months) filled out the Marital Comparison Level Index (MCLI) questionnaire about their level of fulfillment of expectations. Couples were then videotaped talking to one another about the strengths of their marriage followed by a discussion …

Infant Physical Attractiveness, Affect, Temperament, And Gender In Relation To Tester Behavior, Andrea D. Hart May 1996

Infant Physical Attractiveness, Affect, Temperament, And Gender In Relation To Tester Behavior, Andrea D. Hart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Easily observable infant characteristics have been shown to influence others; perceptions of infant competence. This study examined the relation between infant characteristics and a tester's willingness to repeat opportunities for the infant to pass items during administration of a cognitive test. Results showed that infant physical attractiveness was related to lower elicited infant performance (the ratio of items initially failed). Positive affect was related to higher test scores. Because first impressions are likely to contribute to future relationships, it may be important to educate adults who interact with infants about the effects of stereotyping infants based on first impressions.

Risk Factors Associated With Early Adolescent Sexual Values And Behaviors, David Macbeth May 1996

Risk Factors Associated With Early Adolescent Sexual Values And Behaviors, David Macbeth

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Adolescent sexual activity and subsequent pregnancy are ii an increasing dilemma facing American society . There appears to be an increase in the incidence of casual sexual activity among adolescents that leads to over 50% of students between grades 9 and 12 having been involved in sexual intercourse. This study examines changes in adolescent sexual attitudes, behaviors, and values in a select population over a 2-year time span.

A survey of 548 families with adolescents was used to determine the impact of the Facts and Feelings home-based sexual abstinence program on mean scores for academic aspirations, academic achievement , sexual …

Adolescents' Recollection Of Early Physical Contact: Implications For Attachment And Intimacy, Mark D. Oleson May 1996

Adolescents' Recollection Of Early Physical Contact: Implications For Attachment And Intimacy, Mark D. Oleson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three hundred seventy-six college students responded to a measure designed to examine retrospective accounts of the physical affection received during early childhood. The study looked exclusively from the perspective of the adolescent. Assessing the importance of touch in human development, and the role it plays in adult attachment and the ability to form and maintain close and intimate relations with others was the purpose of the study.

Six separate measures were used to assess the role of touch in adolescent development: three items from Gupta and Schork to assess physical affection (touch); Simpson's attachment style measure; Gerlsma, Arrindell, Van der …

Adolescent Friendship Pairs: Similarities In Identity Status Development, Behaviors, Attitudes, And Intentions, James F. Akers May 1996

Adolescent Friendship Pairs: Similarities In Identity Status Development, Behaviors, Attitudes, And Intentions, James F. Akers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Similarities between adolescent friends have been established for many characteristics, including the physical, behavioral, psychological, academic, and social domains of development. Past research and theory also support the notion that psychological and behavioral characteristics are likely related to ego-identity characteristics. This study was primarily a test of the logical extension of the previous statements: Best friends are more similar than nonfriends on identity characteristics. It was also hypothesized that best friends are more similar than nonfriends on behaviors, attitudes, and intentions expected to be related to identity.

A sample of 1,159 grade 10-12 students responded to a survey that included …

During a time of national and local debate over welfare reform, research is needed to determine the effectiveness of specific welfare programs and the impact on the lives of households participating in these programs. The objective of this study was to determine the effect housing and food expenditures have on the diet quality of low-income families. Participants for the study were drawn from government-subsidized housing rolls and housing assistance waiting lists. Diet quality was measured by 16 variables: percent RDA protein, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, and calcium consumed; percent calories from protein, carbohydrates, fat, and alcohol; and the …

The Effect Of Immediacy And Salience Questionnaire Response Rates, Audrey Matsumoto May 1996

The Effect Of Immediacy And Salience Questionnaire Response Rates, Audrey Matsumoto

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this study, a theory that identified salience and immediacy as two constructs that significantly determine questionnaire response rates was tested. This theory emphasized the importance of identifying and rating factors that impact the immediacy and salience of a questionnaire to a specific population. It was proposed that factors that make a questionnaire highly immediate and salient to a given population should be identified first, and then implemented into the construction and administration of the questionnaire. In this way, researchers can manipulate the variables, which will maximize the response rate for their specific population before distribution. A questionnaire that is …

Sources Of Recreational And Community Conflict From Tourism In Moab, Utah, Susan R. Van Patten May 1996

Sources Of Recreational And Community Conflict From Tourism In Moab, Utah, Susan R. Van Patten

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A written survey of 200 Moab residents was used to measure residents' attitudes 11 toward tourism. Three regression models were developed using variables identified in the tourism literature to measure the relative importance of interpersonal contacts with tourists, negative impacts to outdoor-recreation experiences, and community experience in predicting attitudes toward tourism. Interpersonal contacts and recreation impacts both had fairly high predictive capabilities. It was concluded that interactions between recreation visitors/tourists and local residents should be a focus of further research.

Data from the Moab resident survey were also used in conjunction with a survey of mountain bikers visiting or living …

This thesis looks at the history of electronic newspaper delivery systems at several newspapers and provides an in-depth study of how one Utah daily newspaper, the Deseret News in Salt Lake City, developed its own electronic newspaper over a period of years and convinced its board of directors to support it. It outlines the process of defining goals, policies and processes for creating and managing the system. It contains results of a survey conducted of subscribers to the electronic edition, called Crossroads. The survey provides demographic profiles of Crossroads users, shows how often the electronic edition is used in their …

Visitor Use Of Interpretive Facilities At Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming, Rizal Bukhari May 1996

Visitor Use Of Interpretive Facilities At Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming, Rizal Bukhari

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Visitors expect to a gain high-quality outdoor experiences at any recreation site they visit. In order to support that effort, most recreation managers utilize interpretive facilities to educate and inform visitors about the site. It is important for interpretive managers to be aware of what kind of interpretive media could best be used in a given setting for the type of visitor anticipated. To accomplish this goal, it is necessary to understand visitors' behavior and incorporate that understanding into the interpretive planning process.

This study looks at visitor use of interpretive facilities provided at Fossil Butte National Monument, Wyoming. The …

Review Of Peopling The Plains: Who Settled Where In Frontier Kansas By James Shortridge, D. Aidan Mcquillan May 1996

Review Of Peopling The Plains: Who Settled Where In Frontier Kansas By James Shortridge, D. Aidan Mcquillan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Kansas was born in the bloody prelude to the Civil War, a contested territory between North and South. The settlement frontier had penetrated only the eastern third of the state before war broke out; the western two-thirds saw the frontier push westward for several decades after the war, from 1865 to 1885. In the state's extreme western parts the frontier expanded and contracted several times between 1890 and 1930. James Shortridge sets out to explore the origins of Kansas cultural geography with such questions as: Who were these "first effective" settlers on the Kansas frontier? Where did they come from? …

Niches Of Homelessness In Rural Nebraska: Bolstering Existing Understandings, Sharon Lord Gaber May 1996

Niches Of Homelessness In Rural Nebraska: Bolstering Existing Understandings, Sharon Lord Gaber

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Rural homelessness, particularly in the Great Plains region, is under-researched. Most current understandings of homelessness are based on research in metropolitan regions. This paper suggests that the general structural frameworks. which have been developed to model homelessness in metropolitan areas. can serve as a useful starting point for understanding rural homelessness in Nebraska. By using a "key informant" survey of homeless service providers in Nebraska it is clear that there are several niches of homeless persons (Native Americans, migrant workers. meat-packing workers, and transients) present in Nebraska that are not discussed in the existing literature.

Review Of Politics In The Postwaramerican West Edited By Richard Lowitt, Clive S. Thomas May 1996

Review Of Politics In The Postwaramerican West Edited By Richard Lowitt, Clive S. Thomas

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This volume is a welcome addition to the sparse literature on western politics. Its approach is threefold. First, it views postwar western politics from a historical perspective as opposed to that of political science or economics; and editor Richard Lowitt has gathered together mostly historians to write the chapters. Second, instead of examining western politics comparatively by themes or by major events affecting political developments, the book unfolds state by state. There are a total of nineteen chapters coinciding with the volume's definition of the West as the nineteen states from the Great Plains to the Pacific Ocean, including Alaska …

Review Of Geologic Field Trips In Nebraska And Adjacent Parts Of Kansas And South Dakota Edited By Robert F. Diffendal, Jr. And Charles A. Flowerday, James E. Martin

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This guidebook was published in conjunction with the Geological Society of America's North-Central and South-Central sectional meeting held in Lincoln during the spring of 1995. As a result, the diversity of the field trips mirrors the wide geological interests represented at such a gathering. Subjects range from paleontology and stratigraphy to engineering geology. All of the articles provide important geological data often unobtainable in print elsewhere. Eleven field trips were presented during the GSA meeting; two are not included in the guidebook and are available separately, although the source of these materials is not apparent.

Review Of Wild Animals And Settlers On The Great Plains By Eugene D. Fleharty, Charles A. Flowerday May 1996

Review Of Wild Animals And Settlers On The Great Plains By Eugene D. Fleharty, Charles A. Flowerday

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Wild Animals and Settlers on the Great Plains is an informative but flawed book. As an example of environmental history written by a biologist unacquainted with the fundamentals of doing history, it fails to offer any theory (or theories) of history governing the time and place under scrutiny. What it does provide is a huge amount of information drawn from diaries, letters, and newspapers in an inadequately edited form. Lacking primary quantitative data, Eugene Fleharty, a zoologist at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, painstakingly provides a great deal of qualitative, albeit anecdotal, information about Euro-American settlement in Kansas …

Review Of Wetland And Environmental Applications Of Gis Edited By John G. Lyon And Jack Mccarthy, Scott E. Richert May 1996

Review Of Wetland And Environmental Applications Of Gis Edited By John G. Lyon And Jack Mccarthy, Scott E. Richert

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Wetlands are commonly defined as areas periodically or permanently inundated with water and typically characterized by vegetation requiring saturated soil for growth and reproduction. They have become increasingly important in environmental research as their benefits to environmental systems (wildlife habitat, flood control, for example) have become better understood. Wetland and Environmental Applications of GIS is an original contribution to the study of wetlands and other aquatic environments because it is the first book to address the inventory, monitoring, and management of wetlands and other surface waters by using geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing, and computer modeling.

The volume is …

Review Of Future Harvest: Pesticide-Free Farming By Jim Bender, George E. Ham May 1996

Review Of Future Harvest: Pesticide-Free Farming By Jim Bender, George E. Ham

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Jim Bender provides the rationale for pursuing pesticide-free farming and a detailed model of conversion based on his experiences on his own 642 acre farm in southeast Nebraska. Reviewing such deeply ingrained characteristics of conventional agricultural systems in the Plains as separation of livestock from crop production, minimal crop diversity, and the lack of multi-year crop rotations, he recommends that conversion be undertaken gradually over several years as more experience is gained with pesticide-free systems.

In preparing for conversion from conventional to pesticide-free agriculture, one must learn to build terraces and waterways to control soil erosion, to rotate and diversify …

Fate Of Wetlands Associated With The Central Nebraska Irrigation Canal System, Jason D. Ekstein, Scott E. Hygnstrom May 1996

Fate Of Wetlands Associated With The Central Nebraska Irrigation Canal System, Jason D. Ekstein, Scott E. Hygnstrom

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Changes in wetlands in the vicinity of the Phelps and £65 canals operated by Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District in South-central Nebraska were examined using aerial photographs taken on seven occasions from 1938 to 1981. According to previous research, nearly 90% of the original wetlands within the surrounding Rainwater Basin were destroyed or altered by draining and filling between 1900 and 1980. Within a zone extending 10 kilometers on each side of the Phelps and £65 canals, however, we observed an increase in the number and total area of wetlands, which we hypothesize to have been caused by …

Leisure And Aging In Southern Saskatchewan, Ralph Nilson, David Weaver, Carlton Yoshioka May 1996

Leisure And Aging In Southern Saskatchewan, Ralph Nilson, David Weaver, Carlton Yoshioka

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This study examined the psychological and socio-economic dimensions of the leisure experience patterns of the expanding older adult population in the Canadian Great Plains or Prairie region. Survey data were collected from a random sample of 2,969 of persons 65 years of age and older residing in southern Saskatchewan. Results indicated that older adults have a wide range of leisure activities with involvement in numerous individual and community related pursuits. However, when differentiated by season, winter activities tended to be passive, solitary, inexpensive, and home-based activities. Moreover, important psychological dimensions in perceived health and activity of older adults did not …

Review Of Atlas Of Oklahoma Climate By Howard L. Johnson And Claude E. Duchon, John A. Harrington Jr. May 1996

Review Of Atlas Of Oklahoma Climate By Howard L. Johnson And Claude E. Duchon, John A. Harrington Jr.

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Thematic atlases depicting aspects of past weather events and climatic summaries are an important resource for researchers, educators, and the general public. The authors of the Atlas of Oklahoma Climate have produced an engaging text providing a good overview of a subject about which both are highly knowledgeable: Howard Johnson serves as an Assistant State Climatologist in the Oklahoma Climatological Survey; Claude Duchon is a Professor in the School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma.

The atlas is divided into six major sections: an "Introduction"; "Geography and Oklahoma's Weather and Climate"; "Annual Climate"; "Seasonal Climate"; "Wind and Humidity"; and …
