Proof Strategies For Hardware Verification, Robert Eastham, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan May 1996

Proof Strategies For Hardware Verification, Robert Eastham, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

Kno.e.sis Publications

Ascertaining correctness of digital hardware designs through simulation does not scale-up for large designs because of the sheer combinatorics of the problem. Formal verification of hardware designs holds promise because its computational complexity is of the order of number of different types of components (and not number of components in the design). This approach requires the specification of the behavior and the design in a formal language, and reason with them using a theorem prover. In this paper we attempt to develop a methodology for writing and using these specifications for some important classes of hardware circuits. We examine digital …

An American In Paris: Defining American Interests In Post Cold War Europe, Kelly Parker

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

For the last fifty years or so, the members of the field of political science have studied the phenomenon known as the Cold War. It has fascinated many scholars and almost demands attention. The reason is this: the Cold War, even though some would argue that it was a governmental affair, affected so much more than military policy. Economies were built around it. Loyalties were built around it. The world divided around it. Most people could not have imagined the end of the Cold War ten years ago. Even now it is difficult to truly grasp the reality of the …

Ecology, Economy And Ecotourism: Sustaining People And The Environment, Richard Snow May 1996

Ecology, Economy And Ecotourism: Sustaining People And The Environment, Richard Snow

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Tourism is the world's largest industry. The fastest growing segment of the travel and tourist trade is ecotourism. The concept of sustainable development insists that humans cooperate with nature in the search for an ecological economy which can support present and future populations. Ecotourism attempts to attain this elusive goal by preserving ecosystems while generating revenue for local communities. In this study, the researcher examines the positive and negative effects of ecotourism on people, culture, and landscape. An analysis of tourism data seems to suggest that developing countries, which are popular ecotour destinations, are benefitting economically and ecologically from properly …

An Empirical Investigation Into The Causes Of The Dollar's Decline (1985-1993), Ricky Stagg May 1996

An Empirical Investigation Into The Causes Of The Dollar's Decline (1985-1993), Ricky Stagg

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this paper, the writer develops and estimates a synthesis of the monetary and the portfolio-balance approaches of exchange rate determination in an attempt to explain the dollar's recent depreciation. Since 1985, the U.S. dollar has declined against the German deutsche mark and the Japanese yen. Different explanations have arisen as to the cause of the dollar's depreciation. Some economists blame U.S. monetary policy makers for flooding the world with dollars. Others ascribe fault to fiscal policy makers for not being able to bring the budget and current account deficits under control. And still others attribute most of the U.S.'s …

Factors Which Influence Recidivism Rates For Individuals At A Regional Treatment Center (Rtc) Who Have Been Dually Diagnosed With Mental Illness/Chemical Dependency (Mi/Cd), Gina Marie Schmerler

Theses and Graduate Projects

This exploratory study was conducted to examine factors associated with the recidivism rate of hospitalization admissions for individuals who have been admitted to a mentally ill and chemically dependent unit at a local Regional Treatment Center (RTC). The subject population consists of 23 men and 7 women between the ages of 19-49 years of age who have been court-mandated to the state treatment facility due to severe psychological disorders. For the purpose of this study, the term recidivism is defined as readmission to the facility within one year of discharge. The data were drawn from existing records, such as psychosocial …

An Exploration Of The Needs Of Students Who Attend An Alternative Junior High School, Chrislee Jacobs May 1996

An Exploration Of The Needs Of Students Who Attend An Alternative Junior High School, Chrislee Jacobs

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the needs of students who attend Plymouth Christian Youth Center's (PCYC) alternative junior high school, which is located in North Minneapolis. Previous research indicates that students who attend alternative schools may be dealing with a multitude of issues, and therefore, have a wide array of needs which must be addressed. Due to the unique characteristics of alternative schools, these school environments seem to more efficiently meet the needs of their students. Existing literature suggests that when students' needs are met, their school experience will be more satisfying and successful.

The purpose of this research was to explore parental satisfaction with CTARS, an early intervention program, housed in an elementary in South East Minneapolis. The study also examined whether there was a. Relationship between parental satisfaction and improved child’s school performance. Finally, the study identified resilient attributes in children within this program. The research focused on parents of 5th grade students who participated in CTARS during the 1994-95 academic school year. The research design included both qualitative and quantitative methods. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to 24 parents. Findings indicate that, parental participation and satisfaction with CTARS does …

For Appearance's Sake : Gender Attitudes And Risky Health Behavior, Jennifer L. Douglas May 1996

For Appearance's Sake : Gender Attitudes And Risky Health Behavior, Jennifer L. Douglas

Master's Theses

One hundred and forty male and female students were given questionnaires which assessed their gender attitudes, their tanning and smoking behavior, their knowledge about and perceived personal risk of lung and skin cancer, and their beliefs that tanning and slenderness are attractive. A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed significant gender differences in tanning and in gender attitudes; women tanned more than men ... and women had more egalitarian attitudes toward gender than did men ... However, there were no differences between men and women in amount of weight-control smoking. A standard multiple regression revealed that the belief that tanning …

The Canoe As Failure On The Canadian Plains, Norman Henderson May 1996

The Canoe As Failure On The Canadian Plains, Norman Henderson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Canadians mythologize the aesthetics and importance of canoe travel in their nation s development. However, on the Plains, the canoe proved a far from ideal transport mode. The navigation history of a typical small northern Plains river, the Qu'Appelle, illustrates the problems European canoeists faced on the Plains. Key problems included inadequate wood supplies, highly seasonal and variable river flows, meandering rivers, and the lack of feasible portages between major watersheds. Additional handicaps, dangerous in combination, were restricted visibility while canoeing and poor relations with Plains Indian nations. Retracing the forgotten Qu’Appelle river fur trading route confirmed historical evidence of …

Empirical Valuation Of Prairie Potholes: Five Case Studies, Jay A. Leitch, Brett Hovde May 1996

Empirical Valuation Of Prairie Potholes: Five Case Studies, Jay A. Leitch, Brett Hovde

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Dollar values were estimated for four prairie potholes and a wetland complex in North Dakota. Assessing these values required careful consideration of the ecological values and the societal values on a site-specific basis. Assessments of value were made from four perspectives owner, user, regional, and social. Values of specific outputs and total values varied among the five study sites. Annual per hectare values varied from the $10 owner value for the Nome wetland to the $921 regional value for the Alice wetland. The greatest analytical obstacle to obtaining more refined estimates was the physical and biological data needed to technically …

Review Of Peopling The Plains: Who Settled Where In Frontier Kansas By James Shortridge, D. Aidan Mcquillan May 1996

Review Of Peopling The Plains: Who Settled Where In Frontier Kansas By James Shortridge, D. Aidan Mcquillan

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Kansas was born in the bloody prelude to the Civil War, a contested territory between North and South. The settlement frontier had penetrated only the eastern third of the state before war broke out; the western two-thirds saw the frontier push westward for several decades after the war, from 1865 to 1885. In the state's extreme western parts the frontier expanded and contracted several times between 1890 and 1930. James Shortridge sets out to explore the origins of Kansas cultural geography with such questions as: Who were these "first effective" settlers on the Kansas frontier? Where did they come from? …

Review Of A Time To Lose: Representing Kansas In Brown V. Board Of Education By Paul E. Wilson, Anna Shavers May 1996

Review Of A Time To Lose: Representing Kansas In Brown V. Board Of Education By Paul E. Wilson, Anna Shavers

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The fortieth anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Brown v. Board of Education became for many a time to reflect on the wisdom of the Court's decision and to critique its success in desegregating America's public schools. Paul E. Wilson, a law professor at the University of Kansas, has written A Time to Lose not so much to address those issues but a more personal question: why had he argued before the Supreme Court on the wrong side? In his dedication, Wilson sets forth the book's tone and goal: "For Harriet and our children, who believe I was on …

Review Of Rural Development In The United States: Connecting Theory, Practice, And Possibilities By William A. Galston And Karen J. Baehler, Don Macke May 1996

Review Of Rural Development In The United States: Connecting Theory, Practice, And Possibilities By William A. Galston And Karen J. Baehler, Don Macke

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

William Galston and Karen Baehler provide an excellent comprehensive overview of rural development policy and approaches. Their book is enriched by Galston's perspective as a Clinton White House domestic policy advisor and the Who's Who of rural development experts who reviewed and contributed to it.

Part one offers a progressive, expansive panorama of rural development in the United States in the 1990s. Particularly fine is the first chapter's review of critical trends and policy choices. The balance of the work is a textbook approach to seven fundamental sectors within the rural economy: natural resources, manufacturing, services, tourism, the elderly, high …

Niches Of Homelessness In Rural Nebraska: Bolstering Existing Understandings, Sharon Lord Gaber May 1996

Niches Of Homelessness In Rural Nebraska: Bolstering Existing Understandings, Sharon Lord Gaber

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Rural homelessness, particularly in the Great Plains region, is under-researched. Most current understandings of homelessness are based on research in metropolitan regions. This paper suggests that the general structural frameworks. which have been developed to model homelessness in metropolitan areas. can serve as a useful starting point for understanding rural homelessness in Nebraska. By using a "key informant" survey of homeless service providers in Nebraska it is clear that there are several niches of homeless persons (Native Americans, migrant workers. meat-packing workers, and transients) present in Nebraska that are not discussed in the existing literature.

Review Of Politics In The Postwaramerican West Edited By Richard Lowitt, Clive S. Thomas May 1996

Review Of Politics In The Postwaramerican West Edited By Richard Lowitt, Clive S. Thomas

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

This volume is a welcome addition to the sparse literature on western politics. Its approach is threefold. First, it views postwar western politics from a historical perspective as opposed to that of political science or economics; and editor Richard Lowitt has gathered together mostly historians to write the chapters. Second, instead of examining western politics comparatively by themes or by major events affecting political developments, the book unfolds state by state. There are a total of nineteen chapters coinciding with the volume's definition of the West as the nineteen states from the Great Plains to the Pacific Ocean, including Alaska …
