Western Meadowlark Impaled On Barbed-Wire Fence, Lawrence D. Igl
Western Meadowlark Impaled On Barbed-Wire Fence, Lawrence D. Igl
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Recently, Allen and Ramirez (1990, Wilson Bull. 102:553-558) summarized known observations of bird mortality associated with barbed-wire fences. Most reported cases of bird mortality from barbed-wire fences were of non-passerine birds. On 16 June 1993 in Slope County in western North Dakota (NW 1/4, Sec. 10 T134N R103W), I found a dead western meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta) with its right wing impaled by a barb on the middle strand of a three-strand barbed-wire fence. Barbs on the wire were spaced about 12-15 cm apart. The bird was adult-sized, but plumage characteristics indicated that it was a young-of-the-year with well-developed …
Second Record Of White Ibis In North Dakota, Jennifer W. Marlow, Lawrence D. Igl, Melody R. Hartman
Second Record Of White Ibis In North Dakota, Jennifer W. Marlow, Lawrence D. Igl, Melody R. Hartman
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
The breeding range of the white ibis (Eudocimus albus) in the United States is generally restricted to coastal regions along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean north to Virginia (Frederick et al. 1996, Conserv. BioI. 10:203-216). During the breeding season, the white ibis is nomadic and highly opportunistic in its use of unpredictable food resources (Frederick et al. 1996; Bildstein 1993, White ibis: wetland wanderer. Smithsonian Inst. Press, Washington, D.C.). There is one previous record of a white ibis in North Dakota on 4 August 1954 (Gammell and Huenecke 1955, Audubon Field Notes 9:34-36; Lokemoen 1979, …
A Relationship Between River Modification And Species Richness Of Freshwater Turtles In Iowa, Terry J. Vandewalle, James L. Christiansen
A Relationship Between River Modification And Species Richness Of Freshwater Turtles In Iowa, Terry J. Vandewalle, James L. Christiansen
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Comparisons were made of turtle populations in Red Rock Reservoir and the major rivers of the Mississippi River and Missouri River damage systems in Iowa. Of the inland rivers of the Mississippi drainage examined in this study, the Des Moines River had the least amount of remaining turtle habitat. Number of turtle species ranged from five in the Des Moines River to 11 in the Mississippi River, but only three species were found in Red Rock Reservoir. In the Missouri drainage, number of turtle species ranged from three in both the Little Sioux and Nishnabotna rivers to five in the …

Street Gangs—Future Paramilitary Groups?, Robert J. Bunker
CGU Faculty Publications and Research
The New York and Oklahoma City bombings have shown that the United States is no longer immune to politically motivated terrorist attacks. The latter proved that no part of the country was invulnerable; even worse, the perpetrators may be our own disenfranchised citizens.
Is it possible that street gangs' engaging in such activity looms on the horizon? Although it is unlikely that they would act on a political agenda, the emerging patters are all too familiar. The expanding presence of street gangs in the United States can be linked both to military trends in the non-Western world and to future …

Typologies Of Homeless Youth, Orion Isis Gray
Typologies Of Homeless Youth, Orion Isis Gray
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
This paper is a shortened version of Gray’s thesis.
Typologies of homeless youth help researchers and service providers understand who they are working with. However, most of the work on "homeless and runaway youth," as they are often referred to, does not take into account the subtypes within this vast population. Instead of taking such distinctions for granted, this paper focuses on them. The different sections of the paper define and examine these different subtypes. By the conclusion of the thesis, the reader should be able to form an educated opinion on the utility of some of the different typologies …
Yes -- Neural Network Learning Theory Can Resolve The Behavioral Cognitive Controversy, Warren W. Tryon
Yes -- Neural Network Learning Theory Can Resolve The Behavioral Cognitive Controversy, Warren W. Tryon
Psychology Faculty Publications
The positive comments and constructive ton with which Forsyth, Hawkins, and Hutchinson (1996) begin their response to Tryon's (1993b, 1995a, 1995b) thesis that Neural Network Learning Theory (NNLT) can resolve the behavioral cognitive controversy identifies consistencies between Radical Behaviorism (RB) and connectionistic Neural Network Learning Theory (NNLT). The questions they raise in subsequent sections are important to achieving rapprochement of the cognitive behavioral schism and are therefore addressed here. The primary task of unification is to combine the positive contributions of both the behavioral and cognitive perspectives without rejecting or compromising important values of either orientation. For reasons presented below, …
Stress At Work, Coping, And Workers' Health Of An Acquired Firm In Hong Kong, Oi Ling Siu
Stress At Work, Coping, And Workers' Health Of An Acquired Firm In Hong Kong, Oi Ling Siu
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
The structure of the Occupational Stress Indicator (OSI) was adopted as the model to investigate the impact of acquisition stress on workers' health effects. Data were obtained from 101 employees of an acquired firm in Hong Kong. Workers' perceived work pressure was negatively related to job satisfaction, and positively related to mental ill-health, and physical ill-health. Hierarchical moderated regression analyses were employed to study the stressor-strain relationship, and the extent coping strategies moderate this relationship. The results showed that a combination of stressors related significantly to the strain effects, but only a few individual stressors were strong predictors. Coping strategies …
Public Policy On Local Administration In Hong Kong : Past, Present And Future, Yiu Chung Wong
Public Policy On Local Administration In Hong Kong : Past, Present And Future, Yiu Chung Wong
Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series
This paper attempts to delineate the historical evolution of public policy on local administration (district administration) in Hong Kong. Development since the 1980s will be dealt with, and finally local administration under the Special Administrative Region (SAR) after 1997 will be envisaged. However, in contradistinction to the current usage of the term, I shall use “local administration” in a broader sense, including not only administration at the distinct level but also at the central level. As Hong Kong is a small city, the representative structures of the local administration is closely linked with the system in the central level.

Factors Related To Earthquake Preparedness Among Child Care Professionals: Theory And Policy Implications, Ellen N. Junn, D. Guerin
Factors Related To Earthquake Preparedness Among Child Care Professionals: Theory And Policy Implications, Ellen N. Junn, D. Guerin
Office of the Provost Scholarship
With increasing numbers of children enrolled in child care, the safety of the child care environment and the preparedness of personnel to prevent injuries and fatalities in the event of natural disasters becomes an important public policy issue. In this study, earthquake preparedness and its correlates were examined in 25 child care centers located in a southern California community adjacent to the San Andreaas Fault. Extensive survey, interview, and on-site observational data were collected. Findings indicated a wide range of preparedness in child care centers. Half of the child care centers lacked basic essentials required to cope in the aftermath …
