A Hoard Of Stone Beads Near Lake Chad, Nigeria, Graham Connah Jan 1996

A Hoard Of Stone Beads Near Lake Chad, Nigeria, Graham Connah

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

In 1980, a small pot containing 622 carnelian and quartz beads was found accidentally at Ala, in the Nigerian part of the clay plain south of Lake Chad. It appears to constitute a hoard of wealth which its owner buried and subsequently failed to retrieve. Beads of this sort first appear in this area in the second half of the first millennium A.D., but also occur in second-millennium deposits. However, they are usually found as grave goods, and the Ala discovery is almost the only example of a hoard of such beads known to the author. Their presence on the …

Imitation Pearls In France, Marie-José Opper, Howard Opper Jan 1996

Imitation Pearls In France, Marie-José Opper, Howard Opper

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

To achieve the perfect imitation pearl has been the goal of numerous European beadmakers for over 700 years. In France, the art of making false-pearls spread rapidly after Jacquin discovered how to fill hollow glass beads with a pearl-like substance in the 17th century. Since that time, many diverse recipes have been tried and used to satisfy the French public's enormous appetite for affordable, yet elegant, imitations of fine pearls. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, these types of beads became even more popular than before, as they emerged as the principal components of costume jewelry worn by celebrated …

Beads, Pendants And Buttons From Early Historic Creek Contexts At The Tarver Sites, Georgia, Thomas J. Pluckhahn Jan 1996

Beads, Pendants And Buttons From Early Historic Creek Contexts At The Tarver Sites, Georgia, Thomas J. Pluckhahn

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Recent excavations conducted on historic Creek Indian components at the Tarver (9JO6) and Little Tarver (9JO198) sites in central Georgia produced an extensive collection of European trade material, including a large sample of glass and lapidary beads, pendants and buttons. The bead collection is significant for its size, as well as the fact that virtually all of the material was recovered from undisturbed and tightly dated burial contexts attributable to the relatively brief period between about 1695 and 1715.

Akyem Te: The Technology And Socio-Cultural Setting Of The Abompe Bauxite-Beadmaking Industry, Ghana, Yaw Bredwa-Mensah Jan 1996

Akyem Te: The Technology And Socio-Cultural Setting Of The Abompe Bauxite-Beadmaking Industry, Ghana, Yaw Bredwa-Mensah

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Drawing primarily on data obtained from recent research at Akyem Abompe, Ghana, this paper examines the technology and socio-cultural setting of a stone-beadmaking industry in the forest zone of Ghana. Preliminary ethnographic observation of the industry not only reveals that it is community-based, but that it also interacts in a complex way with other local crafts in the village. The production process and marketing of the beads are discussed, as is the antiquity of the industry.

Collections At Risk: Revisiting Serial Cancellations In Academic Libraries, Tina E. Chrzastowski, Karen A. Schmidt Jan 1996

Collections At Risk: Revisiting Serial Cancellations In Academic Libraries, Tina E. Chrzastowski, Karen A. Schmidt

Staff publications, research, and presentations

In 1993, Tina E. Chrzastowski and Karen A. Schmidt published a longitudinal study of serial cancellations from five midwestern academic research libraries. 1 The study found that actual title cancellation overlap was small (4.3%), meaning that many unique titles were being cancelled. A profile for an "at-risk" serial title, one most likely to be cancelled, was also determined. The titles most often cancelled were English-language titles in the sciences having a higher-than-average subscription price. The present study builds on the original research, adding two more years of cancellation data as well as serial order data. Results show that the rate …

Culture, Ideology, And Community: The Dynamics Of Accommodation And Resistance To Restructuring Of The Mexican Sugar Sector, Donna Chollett Jan 1996

Culture, Ideology, And Community: The Dynamics Of Accommodation And Resistance To Restructuring Of The Mexican Sugar Sector, Donna Chollett

Anthropology Publications

Neoliberalism has provoked profound and diverse consequences for rural Mexico, escalating the agricultural crisis for producers and workers in various sectors. Against this context, recent improvements in the sugar sector raise interesting questions about its relative economic success under the neoliberal paradigm. This article contrasts two cane zones--one that experienced economic recovery and another affected by abandonment of the sugar mill--to argue that in the interstices of modernizing neoliberalism, cane growers and mill workers who were subjected to politics of exclusion struggle to ensure the survival of their culture, community, and economic livelihood.

Front Matter, Coalition For Education In The Outdoors (Ceo)

Research in Outdoor Education

The Coalition for Education in the Outdoors initiated a Research Task Force in 1990 with the purpose of supporting the conduct of research in the field and the dissemination of the results. The symposium at Bradford Woods and these proceedings offer evidence of the success of this task force. At the first symposium in 1992, there was general agreement that the symposium be a regular occurrence. The 1994 and 1996 Symposia and these Proceedings are indicators of the Coalition's continued support of research in outdoor education. Information on future events will be available through the Coalition office.

Outdoor Education And Spirituality, Tom Smith Jan 1996

Outdoor Education And Spirituality, Tom Smith

Research in Outdoor Education

The question at hand is that of researching the impact of outdoor recreational and educational experiences on the spiritual development of the individual. I approach that question from the perspective of a facilitator of personal growth who has long advocated the methodologies considered as experiential outdoor/challenge/adventure education.

Outdoor Education And The Schools, Bert Horwood Jan 1996

Outdoor Education And The Schools, Bert Horwood

Research in Outdoor Education

The research reported to gatherings sponsored by the Coalition for Education in the Outdoors has had relatively little connection with school-based outdoor education. In this paper, I will explore the potentially fruitful interface between education in the outdoors and the schools. The exploration is influenced by the uncertainty of our times, and I have organized this report to reflect two views. One is that the social ferment of the mid-1990s is normal and that we can continue to conduct research in the way that Kuhn (1974) characterized as "normal science." The second view is that the social fabric of the …

Responsible Environmental Behavior: Metaphoric Transference Of Minimum-Impact Ideology, J. Porter Hammitt, Wayne A. Freimund Jan 1996

Responsible Environmental Behavior: Metaphoric Transference Of Minimum-Impact Ideology, J. Porter Hammitt, Wayne A. Freimund

Research in Outdoor Education

This abstract represents a thesis research project that studied changes in National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) students' attitudes, intentions, and behavior, as they pertain to the environment, resulting from participation in NOLS' Wind River Wilderness course. It was hypothesized that an increase in these concerns would result from the metaphoric transference of minimum-impact ideology to daily life. Prominent theories from the fields of social psychology and environmental education relating attitudes, intentions, behavior, and other considerations were incorporated into the theoretical framework of the study.

Providing An Authentic Wilderness Experience? Thinking Beyond The Wilderness Act Of 1964, William T. Borrie, Joseph W. Roggenbuck Jan 1996

Providing An Authentic Wilderness Experience? Thinking Beyond The Wilderness Act Of 1964, William T. Borrie, Joseph W. Roggenbuck

Research in Outdoor Education

Six facets of a wilderness experience are suggested (oneness, humility, primitiveness, timelessness, solitude, and care) based on the writings of wilderness philosophers such as Henry David Thoreau and John Muir. In structuring our lessons in wilderness, we could do well to broaden our notion of wilderness be- yond the Wilderness Act.

Ethical Frameworks, Moral Practices And Outdoor Education, Karen M. Fox, Mick Lautt Jan 1996

Ethical Frameworks, Moral Practices And Outdoor Education, Karen M. Fox, Mick Lautt

Research in Outdoor Education

Discoveries and insights from quantum physics and chaos theory help create new metaphors about. ethical frameworks and moral practices in outdoor education. Using concepts such as fractals, fields, and strange attractors, we explore new ways to view research results, scholarly writings, and creative endeavors related to outdoor education. In addition, we evaluate four themes related to the present ethical discourse in outdoor education and sketch new directions for moral practice.

A Research Update Of Adventure Therapy (1992-1995): Challenge Activities And Ropes Courses, Wilderness Expeditions, And Residential Camping Programs, H. Lee Gillis, Donna Thomsen

Research in Outdoor Education

n 1992 a review of research in adventure therapy offered a perspective that utilized work in psychotherapy as a lens to view the current state of the field. From that review, several recommendations were made to gain respect within the field of traditional mental health. This update examines the recommendations made in 1992 and updates them utilizing research that has taken place in adventure therapy and borrowing liberally from suggestions made for enhancing the field of psychotherapy. The article makes the following points. First, the field of adventure therapy must create a collective document that addresses its accomplishments and effectiveness. …
