Archeological Testing At Pflugerville Bottling Works, Travis County, Texas, John W. Clark Jr. Jan 1996

Archeological Testing At Pflugerville Bottling Works, Travis County, Texas, John W. Clark Jr.

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Archival research and archeological test excavations in connection with proposed development of Dessau Road in north Travis County revealed the presence of the Pflugerville Bottling Works near the north end of the project. The plant was established in 1914 and moved to Austin in 1927. Archeological excavations exposed a midden, paved area and filled brick cistern but did not expose evidence of the building. Because of the lack of an associated building, those parts of the site within the proposed right-of-way are not considered eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

The present report outlines all investigations at site 41PC476 from June 26-30, 1996. It also details the methods used and the results obtained during test excavation of the site. A brief analysis of the cultural materials identified at the site is included. Eroded burned rock concentrations are exposed on the surface of site 4 1PC476, and fire-cracked rock was found below the ground surface as well. Although a few lithic artifacts were found in test excavations, no ethnobotanical remains were identified. All diagnostic artifacts were recovered from the surface. The artifactual evidence indicates an Archaic period occupation with lithic activities …

Building User-Oriented Web Sites For Archives, R Philip Reynolds Jan 1996

Building User-Oriented Web Sites For Archives, R Philip Reynolds

Librarian and Staff Publications

For years the banking industry did not consider electronic services for customers as "real" business. Then in 1994, a study entitled "New Paradigms in Retail Banking" by the Bank Administration Institute (BAI) and First Manhattan Consulting Group revealed that more than half of all retail banking transactions occurred by way of an electronic medium. People were no longer going to their branch offices, but conducted business with their phones, PCs, and ATM cards. Suddenly banking executives stopped asking "Why should we offer electronic services?" and started asking "Why aren't we offering electronic services?" This same revolution in thought is inevitable …

Social Support Mechanisms Among Athletes With Disabilities, Jeffrey J. Martin, Carol Adams Mushett Jan 1996

Social Support Mechanisms Among Athletes With Disabilities, Jeffrey J. Martin, Carol Adams Mushett

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

The purpose of this investigation was to describe social support mechanisms of swimmers with disabilities and examine relationships among social support, self-efficacy, and athletic satisfaction. Results indicated that athletes felt satisfied with the social support they received. Mothers and friends provided primary support in a variety of areas requiring non-sport-related knowledge. Additionally, there were important secondary sources of support in areas requiring sport-specific knowledge. Coaches were primary sources of support in areas that required sport expertise. Fathers were also important sources of secondary support in areas that required both sport expertise and nonsport expertise. Correlational results suggested that athletes who …

In Making China Modernized: Comparative Modernization Between Mainland China And Taiwan, Wen-Hui Tsai

Maryland Series in Contemporary Asian Studies

The first edition of In Making China Modernized: Comparative Modernization between Mainland China and Taiwan was written and completed in the early 1990s at a time when hostilities between both sides of the Taiwan Strait had begun to diminish through increasing people-to-people and cultural contacts. A lot has been happening since the publication of the first edition, however, and in March of 1996, mainland China and Taiwan became the foci of world attention. Headlines on the worldwide news media and global communication networks reported a growing tension between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, with all eyes on the …

The Business Of Our Lives, Thomas F. Head Jan 1996

The Business Of Our Lives, Thomas F. Head

Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts

I view John Woolman's "A Plea for the Poor" through the eyes of my own experience. In particular, two aspects of my experience shape my vision: that of being an economist and that of being a Quaker. The economist in me is sensitive to statements about prices, wages, rents, production, distribution, equality, inequality, contracts, poverty and wealth. The Quaker in me responds especially to the language of the spirit. When Woolman speaks of God, the Creator, our Redeemer, Jesus Christ, pure wisdom, Divine love, tender mercies, universal love, the Fountain of universal light and love, our Lord, our Saviour and …

Religion And Ethics In The Thought Of John Bellers, T. Vail Palmer Jr. Jan 1996

Religion And Ethics In The Thought Of John Bellers, T. Vail Palmer Jr.

Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts

The lives and writings of seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Friends have had an enormous impact on later generations of Quakers. They have also received due attention from church historians. George Fox's Journal has achieved a measure of fame as a Christian devotional classic. Beyond this, only two of these early Friends have received significant attention, after their time, in circles beyond the Quaker family. One of these Friends, William Penn, is well enough known to need no further comment. The other one is John Bellers. His writings have had their chief impact on Socialist and Communist thinkers. Robert Owen, early …

A Nature Nudge, Gary K. Fawver Jan 1996

A Nature Nudge, Gary K. Fawver

Truth's Bright Embrace: Essays and Poems in Honor of Arthur O. Roberts

For a number of years now, I have believed that informal and formal outdoor experiences built on a biblical knowledge base can be beneficial and should be purposely pursued throughout one's life. My intentions for a vocational ministry in the outdoors have been to reconnect people with the natural realm, to assist them in rediscovering the outdoors. In support of that, I conducted an action research project to demonstrate the benefits of God's natural world, the outdoors, in the lives of a select group of people through a five-day "immersion" in that outdoor environment. The outdoor setting became the mechanism …

Experiences Of Bidialectism In College-Educated African Americans: An Exploratory Study, Ina N. Owens

Masters Theses

This study was undertaken to explore experiences of bidialectism in college-educated African Americans. The major questions in this study attempted to answer the following: 1) How do college-educated African Americans perceive and negotiate differences between Black and Standard English? 2) Does negotiating two language systems impact their sense of cultural identity? If so, in what ways? and, 3) Is there a conflict involved in negotiating two language systems? If so, what is the nature of the conflict?

Eight interviews were conducted with graduate students who were both Black and Standard English speakers. Subjects ranged in age from 22 to 50. …

Rural And Urban Police Officer Attitudes Toward Psychologists And Psychological Services, Kara Gettman Jan 1996

Rural And Urban Police Officer Attitudes Toward Psychologists And Psychological Services, Kara Gettman

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Psychologists are frequently called upon to work with law enforcement personnel, yet little research has been conducted to examine the attitudes of police officers toward psychologists and psychological services. The purpose of this study was to survey police officers in both urban and rural settings in an attempt to gauge their attitudes toward psychologists and psychological services. The researcher designed the questionnaire that was used because no single assessment instrument currently exists which measures all of the potentially relevant variables The attitudes assessed included the perceived need for psychologists and psychological services, the preferred roles for psychologists in law enforcement …

Sex Differences In Television Viewing And Attention: Do Males Really Channel Surf More Than Females?, Melissa Morrison Jan 1996

Sex Differences In Television Viewing And Attention: Do Males Really Channel Surf More Than Females?, Melissa Morrison

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Channel surfing is often thought of as a male-dominated pastime; however, previously there was no objective data supporting this conclusion. In the present study television viewing and channel surfing were monitored in 44 college students who simultaneously performed an auditory vigilance task. In addition, a survey was administered to determine self-reported individual television viewing habits. Results showed that males channel surfed at almost twice the rate of females. In addition, after the first test tone they generally detected more tones in the vigilance task than females. It was concluded the high channel surfing rate of males reflected lower levels of …

Religious Orientation And Homophobia: An Application Of The Allport And Batson Conceptualizations, Scotty K. Caudill Jan 1996

Religious Orientation And Homophobia: An Application Of The Allport And Batson Conceptualizations, Scotty K. Caudill

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study elucidates the relationship between the intrinsic, extrinsic, and quest religious orientations and prejudice toward gay men and lesbians. Measures of the religious orientations, homophobia, social desirability, and demographic items were administered to 228 university student volunteers. As predicted, the intrinsic orientation correlated positively and significantly with homophobia even with social desirability controlled, and the quest orientation correlated negatively and significantly with homophobia, also with social desirability controlled. Contrary to prediction, however, the extrinsic orientation di d not correlate significantly with homophobia. These findings support previous research suggesting that an intrinsic orientation does not obviate prejudicial attitudes toward all …

A Survey To Determine How The Media Affected Operational Security Of The 1st Armored Division In Bosnia, Stanford E. Angion

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to survey the commanders and public affairs officers who were mobilized and deployed to Bosnia in 1995 with the U.S. Army’s 1st Armored Division as part of Operation Joint Endeavor, for their views about how they think the media affected their units’ operational security. Many articles have been written concerning the adversarial relationship between the military and the media, but little scientific research has been published on the effects of the media on military operational security during times of conflict. This study will build on the research previously conducted by Capt. John B. Snyder …

Critical Decision Making Skills Of Postgraduate Respiratory Care Personnel, Leisa Kay Bowden Jan 1996

Critical Decision Making Skills Of Postgraduate Respiratory Care Personnel, Leisa Kay Bowden

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The researcher of the study became interested in critical decision making skills while working with Respiratory Care post graduates. The researcher of the study noticed through observation a deficiency in critical thinking skills, reasoning abilities and decision making skills of recent post graduate Respiratory personnel. These weaknesses impacted a deterioration in interdepartmental communications and most importantly a deterioration in the quality of patient care. The problem of this study is to determine the effects of critical decision making skills in the College of West Virginia’s 1995 Respiratory Care class as compared to the College of West Virginia’s 1994 Respiratory Care …

Working Effectively With International Students At Higher Education Institutions, Majed J. Khader Phd Jan 1996

Working Effectively With International Students At Higher Education Institutions, Majed J. Khader Phd

Librarian Research

Before addressing special characteristics, needs, and problems of international students, I would like to share with you the answer to questions that some people may have in mind. The questions are: Why do some people travel to foreign countries to study? Why do some countries send their young people to study abroad? Don't these countries have universities at home? Isn't it too costly to send students overseas?

Most countries do have universities, often prestigious universities. And it is indeed costly for these countries to send students overseas to study. But the real issue is not money, nor is it the …
