The Useful Field Of View Of Reading Disabled Children, Jerri Edwards Apr 1995

The Useful Field Of View Of Reading Disabled Children, Jerri Edwards

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Recent research suggests that some reading disabled children process visual information differently due to a transient system or magnocellular pathway deficit. In light of this hypothesis, the present study represents an investigation of the visual processing abilities of both good and poor readers using a new technique which taps several aspects of transient visual input by presenting brief masked targets with varying attentional demand. Sixteen subjects' reading capabilities were assessed by the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test-Revised. The subjects were classified as reading disabled if they had a two or more year lag in reading skill (n=7) or as non-reading disabled …

3,000 Strong, Susan Wehmeyer Apr 1995

3,000 Strong, Susan Wehmeyer

University Libraries' Staff Publications

In its 1OOth year, the Ohio Library Council boasts nearly 3,000 members. This number is a healthy figure in historical terms, but additional expansion is desirable. Additional members will help meet our need to magnify the voice of the association in public relations and in lobbying with the state government.

Our targeted candidates for expanded membership cannot, however, be drawn from the public library sector, which has long been the backbone of the organization. After all, who stands to gain most from an increased tax distribution to public libraries but the people who work there? The OLC leadership has already …

Gophers, Ghosts, And Electronic Dreams: A Feminist Critique Of New Literary Forms, Jennifer Sue Boyers Apr 1995

Gophers, Ghosts, And Electronic Dreams: A Feminist Critique Of New Literary Forms, Jennifer Sue Boyers

Masters Theses

New literary forms was used as a method to show that women writers construct notions of objectivity, subjectivity, reflexivity and privilege fundamentally different than do males who are writing new literary forms. A narrative new literary form construct was employed and epistemological issues were explored in a self-referentially reflexive way.

The history and epistemological assumptions of new literary forms was explored in order to provide a context for the study. The feminist critique examined the use of autobiography in sociological writing, looked at women writers in the area of science studies, and explored essentialist and non-essentialist feminist epistemologies.

It was …

Competitive Long-Distance Running And Its Effect On The Self-Concept Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents: An Evaluative Study, Elizabeth R. Rogers Apr 1995

Competitive Long-Distance Running And Its Effect On The Self-Concept Of Emotionally Disturbed Adolescents: An Evaluative Study, Elizabeth R. Rogers

Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the effectiveness of the "Runaway" program, a competitive long-distance running program, in meeting the program goals for the treatment of emotionally disturbed adolescents. The study reviews Piers-Harris Self Concept Scale (SCS) scores of clients in a long-term in-patient treatment facility. A Post-test only research design was used to compare the scores of those who participated in the program to the scores of those who did not. A statistically significant difference in the self-concept of runners and non-runners tested was obtained . The program met the goal of improving the patients' self-concept.

Quantile Regression Model With Unknown Censoring Point, Moshe Buchinsky, Jinyong Hahn Apr 1995

Quantile Regression Model With Unknown Censoring Point, Moshe Buchinsky, Jinyong Hahn

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The paper introduces an estimator for the linear censored quantile regression model when the censoring point is an unknown function of a set of regressors. The objective function minimized is convex and the minimization problem is a linear programming problem, for which there is a global minimum. The suggested procedure applies also to the special case of a fixed known censoring point. Under fairly weak conditions the estimator is shown to have n -convergence rate and is asymptotically normal. In the special case of a fixed censoring point it is asymptotically equivalent to the estimator suggested by Powell (1984, 1986a). …

Local Politics In The Time Of Turabi's Revolution: Gender, Class And Ethnicity In Western Sudan, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray Apr 1995

Local Politics In The Time Of Turabi's Revolution: Gender, Class And Ethnicity In Western Sudan, Michael Kevane, Leslie C. Gray

Economics

In one small village in western Sudan local political struggles over power and resources are enmeshed in discursive struggles over representations of gender, ethnicity, class and community. Analysis of two specific conflicts illustrates this point. In one conflict over control of a village grain co-operative some villagers sought to exclude women, West African immigrants and the poor from participating in political decision-making. In a second conflict over a roadside market these same villagers, empowered by the divisive rhetoric and policies of the National Islamic Front regime, again mobilised dominant representations of class, gender and ethnicity in an attempt to prevent …
