The Metaphors Of Retirement : Cutting Cords, Disentangling From Webs, And Heading For Pasture, Steven R. Phillips, Betsy Wackernagel Bach Apr 1995

The Metaphors Of Retirement : Cutting Cords, Disentangling From Webs, And Heading For Pasture, Steven R. Phillips, Betsy Wackernagel Bach

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Pondy (1983) states, "Metaphors help to organize the objective facts of the

situation in the minds of the participants" (p. 157). This investigation

sought to provide insight into how actors viewed retirement by uncovering

and analyzing metaphors associated with retirement. Differences in the

metaphors used by retirees and non retirees were also examined. Retirees

used metaphors which indicated that "Transition," "Emotion," "Freedom,"

and "Shedding Weight" are a significant part of the retirement experience.

This study suggests that metaphor analysis provides a richly varied and

salient source of information about social actors' perceptions of

organizational retirement.

Athletic Identity And Sport Orientation Of Adolescent Swimmers With Disabilities, Jeffrey J. Martin, Carol Adams Mushett, Kari L. Smith Apr 1995

Athletic Identity And Sport Orientation Of Adolescent Swimmers With Disabilities, Jeffrey J. Martin, Carol Adams Mushett, Kari L. Smith

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

Measures of athletic identity and sport orientation, developed from self-schema theory, social role theory, and achievement motivation theory, were used to examine international adolescent swimmers with disabilities. The multidimensional Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (Brewer, Van Raalte, & Linder, 1993) was used to assess self-identity, social identity, exclusivity, and negative affectivity. The Sport Orientation Questionnaire (Gill & Deeter, 1988) measured competitiveness, win orientation, and goal orientation. Swimmers reported (a) a strong self-identity, (b) a moderate to strong social identity, (c) negative affectivity with lower levels of exclusivity, (d) strong competitiveness and goal orientation, and (e) moderate win orientation. Self-identity was correlated …

Facts, Things, And The Orphans Of Girard College: Francis Lieber, Protopragmatist, Aviam Soifer Apr 1995

Facts, Things, And The Orphans Of Girard College: Francis Lieber, Protopragmatist, Aviam Soifer

Cardozo Law Review

Rufus Choate, the dominant and domineering Boston lawyer and orator, once described Francis Lieber as "the most fertile, indomitable, unsleeping, combative and propagandizing person of his race." Lieber was indeed always scrambling, always proposing projects and looking for work, always reading and thinking and investigating. The proud inventor of words such as "penology," "bureaucracy," and "jural," Lieber delighted in terming himself a "publicist," yet another of his English neologisms. From his arrival in the United States in 1827 to his death in 1872, Lieber was a restless initiator who managed to be influential in myriad ways in his adopted land, …

Creating Bicultural Identities: The Role Of School-Based Bilingual Paraprofessionals In Ontemporary Immigrant Accommodation (Two Kansas Case Studies), Edmund T. Hamann Apr 1995

Creating Bicultural Identities: The Role Of School-Based Bilingual Paraprofessionals In Ontemporary Immigrant Accommodation (Two Kansas Case Studies), Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This study locates the professional and informal practices of school-based bilingual paraprofessionals (paras) in the context of the larger social phenomenon of acculturation, cultural brokerage, and identity construction. It demonstrates how the paras in two Kansas communities transform an assimilationist mandate into something quite different, the promotion of bicultural identities, as part of a process called “additive biculturalism.” Additive biculturalism incorporates Weiss’s characterization of paras as cultural brokers (1994), but expands upon it significantly. As the first part of additive biculturalism, bilingual paras model and promote bicultural identities among the English-Learner students and parents they work with. As the second …

Social Policy In The Arab World, Jacqueline S. Ismael, Tareq Y. Ismael Apr 1995

Social Policy In The Arab World, Jacqueline S. Ismael, Tareq Y. Ismael

Faculty Books

Social policy may be broadly identified as a category of policies explicitly and specifically designed to deal with the manifold problems of poverty, inequality, and inequity. How a state "deals" with these issues has relied on the perception of social policy as primarily a function of economic variables. An alternative view, however, has seen social policy as primarily a function of ideological variables. While there has been substantial examination of social policy development in advanced industrial states, little is known or systematically studied about social policy determinants in the developing world. Nonetheless, it is starkly evident that patterns of poverty, …

Race And Language On A College Campus, William H. Dozier Apr 1995

Race And Language On A College Campus, William H. Dozier

Masters Theses

This research was used to measure the attitudes of students toward African American English at a predominantly European American University. It was hypothesized that significant differences would be found between the responses of the African American and European American students. Using a random telephone survey of the population, three (Language Legitimacy, Language Acceptance, and Cultural Value) of the four hypotheses were found to be significant. The fourth hypothesis (Employment Inhibition) was rejected indicating that both groups felt language was used as an employment stratification device. The data showed that although there were significant differences in the attitudes by race over …

Limiting Growth In Las Vegas - A Necessary Growth Strategy For The Twenty-First Century, Cheryl Ann Frassa Apr 1995

Limiting Growth In Las Vegas - A Necessary Growth Strategy For The Twenty-First Century, Cheryl Ann Frassa

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Land development in the Las Vegas Valley continues at an unprecedented rate and future growth will no doubt be strongly advocated. Yet, water resources in this desert area are finite, and in the near future, supply will fall short of demand. Plans are underway to supplement the existing supply, and proposals to secure additional sources are under investigation. But there are no guarantees these ambitious endeavors will materialize. In light of the pending water crisis, the pervasive "growth at all cost" policies now dominant in the valley must be abandoned and more realistic land-use policies developed; ones based on the …

Updating The Colorado River Compact, Jeffrey A. Freer Apr 1995

Updating The Colorado River Compact, Jeffrey A. Freer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Water is essential to life in the arid environment of the western United States. For centuries, humans have used the Colorado River to fulfill their needs and until the past 100 years, the use of the river was sustainable. Over the last 100 years, the Colorado River has been dammed and diverted to "reclaim" the arid west for man's use. In 1946, a Department of the Interior report stated that "Tomorrow the Colorado will be utilized to the very last drop. Its water will convert thousands of additional acres of sagebrush desert to flourishing farms and beautiful homes for servicemen, …

Public Choice Or Public Spirit: Toward A More Comprehensive Theory Of Regulation, Gary R. Kitts Apr 1995

Public Choice Or Public Spirit: Toward A More Comprehensive Theory Of Regulation, Gary R. Kitts

Dissertations

This study examines the decisions made by state public utility regulatory commissions from the perspectives of two primary theories of regulatory decision making-- the public choice and public spirit models. The public choice model posits that an agency’s decisions are responsive to the pressures placed upon the organization by competing external interest groups. The public spirit model postulates that an agency’s decisions reflect the relative values of those with authority or influence within the organization. The study hypothesizes that each is incomplete and proposes a process model based on variables derived from both theories.

The research analyzed 240 utility rate …

The Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On State And Trait Body Image And Physical Fitness Among College Women, Sherri L. Hensley Apr 1995

The Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On State And Trait Body Image And Physical Fitness Among College Women, Sherri L. Hensley

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

Cumulative evidence shows body dissatisfaction is a salient problem among women, and is linked to various psychological disorders and disturbances. While numerous perspectives regarding the negative body-image phenomenon exist, one area of scientific inquiry is the relationship between physical exercise and body image. With the current sociocultural emphasis on physical fitness and attractiveness, the effects of exercise on body image warrants serious consideration. The present investigation compared 57 women who participated in a 13-week aerobic exercise program to 29 sedentary control women on the following variables: state and trait body image, cardiorespiratory fitness, and body composition. The exercising women were …

This research was conducted in a large urban elementary school where six students with severe and profound disabilities (SPD) were integrated fully in age-appropriate classrooms. The purpose of the research was to collect evidence regarding the effectiveness of this full-integration program. The results were as follows: (1) Reading and math achievement scores were not affected by the presence of an SPD student in the classroom except for in grade 4 where apparently math achievement was affected adversely. (2) Fourth graders in classes with a fully-integrated SPD student had more positive attitudes about persons with disabilities than students in the control …

Self-Esteem, Sense Of Community, And Participation In Organized Sports: A Study Of Rural High School Students On Virginia's Eastern Shore, Michele K. Lee

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

Using 1995 Survey data collected from high school students on Virginia's Eastern Shore, this study investigates how rural adolescents view themselves and their communities, and specifically how sports participation may affect self-esteem and sense of community. Adolescents, faced with a transition period between high school and adulthood, must begin to make choices such as attending college or technical school, entering the workforce, and/or moving away from their home communities. These choices are particularly important to the Eastern Shore because its economic vitality is in decline and its social vitality is hard hit by out-migration. Analyses of data from Northampton County …

An Examination Of Factors Influencing The Definition Of Rape, Connie Sue Minton Apr 1995

An Examination Of Factors Influencing The Definition Of Rape, Connie Sue Minton

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the concept of rape and factors which influence the definition of rape. A survey consisting of demographic and attitudinal questions and rape scenarios was administered to college students at two middle-sized universities in the southeast. The results indicate that as the level of intimacy between the victim and the rapist increases the likelihood of a situation being defined as a rape decreases. In this study religion and political attitudes were two independent variables which did not influence the definition of rape while race, gender, relationships with women, and attitudes toward women were …

The Transference Of Traditional American Indian Oral Narratives Into Contemporary Literature, Barbara A. Baisley Apr 1995

The Transference Of Traditional American Indian Oral Narratives Into Contemporary Literature, Barbara A. Baisley

English Theses & Dissertations

This thesis will examine Native American oral narratives and determine what influence western culture has had on the written recording of these stories. By examining traditional literature, I will analyze a trickster myth in order to establish Native American literary patterns. I will then examine Henry Schoolcraft's translations of Chippewa oral narratives and determine what is characteristic of Native American oral narratives and what alterations he made in order to market these narratives to an audience deeply entrenched in western literature.

I will also distinguish between Native American narratives translated into English and English narratives that contain an Native American …

Conflict In Chechnya: An Overview, Walter Bergen Apr 1995

Conflict In Chechnya: An Overview, Walter Bergen

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

On the night of December 31, 1995, Russian Federation forces launched a massive tank and infantry assault on the city of Grozny. The attack and subsequent defeat of Federal forces by lightly armed Chechen irregulars, propelled a little-known Caucasian people and city onto the TV screens and newspaper headlines of the Western world. The purpose of this article is to provide readers with the context for the present conflict in Chechnya, to describe some early efforts at peace making in the region, and to offer a preliminary analysis of the consequences of the conflict. This overview comes from the vantage …
