Jens Horstrup: A Labor Legacy, Shannon Kracht Jan 1992

Jens Horstrup: A Labor Legacy, Shannon Kracht

The Bridge

When Jens Horstrup was a young man, his father Albert taught him that every worker had a right to take part in decisions made by his or her employer. It was a lesson that he carried - and re-taught - for the remainder of his life. Born in July, 1907, in Fredrickshavn to a ship patternmaker father, Jens opted for the bricklaying trade. He served a seven-year apprenticeship in Denmark, worked as a bricklayer in his country for awhile, and, seeking the challenges inherent in new opportunities, traveled to America in 1927. In his book, The Danish Americans, George R. …

My First Ninety Years, Agneta Jensen Slott Jan 1992

My First Ninety Years, Agneta Jensen Slott

The Bridge

My father and mother, John Christian and Anne Jensen and three children, Signius, Katherine and Kamille, came to America from Denmark in 1890. They settled in Tacoma for three years where my father worked as a bricklayer. Fremming, their fourth child, was born while they lived in Tacoma. After three years they came to Enumclaw, bought some wooded acreage which is now part of the King County Fair Grounds. My father cleared a space big enough to build a house. He worked in a logging camp and walked four miles to and from work. In 1893 they moved to Franklin …

The Exploration By Means Of Repertory Grids Of Semantic Differences Among Names For Office Documents., Barbara H. Kwasnik, Corinne Jorgensen, Jan 1992

The Exploration By Means Of Repertory Grids Of Semantic Differences Among Names For Office Documents., Barbara H. Kwasnik, Corinne Jorgensen,

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

We used repertory grids to investigate the differences in names assigned to a selected list of 11 frequently mentioned office documents. The assumption is that naming reflects a classificatory decision and is based on a complex set of perceived aspects (which we call constructs) of the documents being named. We describe repertory grids as used in this application and summarize the resulting analysis.

Floristic Composition And Conservation Status Of Fens In Iowa, John A. Pearson, Mark J. Leoschke Jan 1992

Floristic Composition And Conservation Status Of Fens In Iowa, John A. Pearson, Mark J. Leoschke

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Over 200 extant fens of varying condition were documented during an extensive inventory conducted in Iowa between 1986 and 1991. Approximately half of the extant fens support endangered, threatened, special concern, or other rare plant species. Approximately 25 fens are outstanding conservation prospects with intact vegetation, high species richness, and rare species. Nearly 40% of all potential fen sites have been destroyed by cultivation or damage; another 30% remain unknown due to lack of a field visit, but most appear on aerial photographs to be very small, disturbed fragments. In addition to their traditionally recognized range in northwest Iowa, fens …

Charles Rueben Keyes And The History Of Iowa Archaeology, William Green Jan 1992

Charles Rueben Keyes And The History Of Iowa Archaeology, William Green

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Charles Reuben Keyes (1871-1951) achieved recognition during his lifetime as the "founding father" of Iowa archaeology, and later assessments confirmed and reemphasized Keyes' stature as Iowa's pioneer archaeologist. The collections and documents Keyes compiled, his interpretive publications, and the records of field work he coordinated have proven more valuable to Midwest and Plains archaeology every year. This article emphasizes Keyes' involvement in the development of professionalism in American archaeology and Iowa’s position in the growth of the discipline from 1920 to 1950. Keyes' contacts with the principal archaeologists of his era ensured Iowa’s involvement in the development of survey methods …

Patterns Of Courtship For Remarriage: Implications For Child Adjustment And Parent-Child Relationships, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Edward R. Anderson, Mavis E. Hetherington, Glenn W. Clingempeel

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

Most children who experience their parents' divorce also experience their custodial parent's remarriage. However, research has not addressed how patterns of courtship for remarriage influence the developing child and his or her relationships in the new family. This longitudinal study focuses on 57 remarried, stepfather families with a target child aged 9 to 13, using multimethod, multi-informant measures of child adjustment and parent-child relationships. Comparisons were made to determine whether the custodial mother's number of dating partners, remarriage courtship length, or the timing and sequence of typical courtship stages affected the child's adjustment and his or her relationships with the …

Situational Domains Of Social Phobia, Craig S. Holt, Richard G. Heimberg, Debra A. Hope, Michael R. Liebowitz Jan 1992

Situational Domains Of Social Phobia, Craig S. Holt, Richard G. Heimberg, Debra A. Hope, Michael R. Liebowitz

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Although social phobia is defined as severe anxiety in social situations, little is known about the range or prevalence of social situations that elicit anxiety in social phobic individuals. The present study developed the concept of situational domains, groups of similar situations that may provoke anxiety in subsets of social anxious persons. Four conceptually derived situational domains were examined: formal speaking/interaction, informal speaking/interaction, observation by others, and assertion. Ninety-one social phobic patients were classified as anxiety-positive or anxiety-negative within each situational domain, varying inclusion criteria of anxiety experienced in each situation and the number of anxiety-producing situations within a domain. …
