Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg
Nothing Recedes Like Success - Risk Analysis And The Organizational Amplification Of Risks, William R. Freudenburg
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Professor Freudenburg believes that there is room for improvement in Risk analysis, particularly in drawing on systematic studies of human behavior in the calculation of real, empirical probabilities of failure. The need is argued to be especially acute where technological Risks are associated with low expected probabilities of failure and are managed by human organizations for extended periods of time. This permits complacency to set in.
Reply To Valverde, Paul B. Thompson
Reply To Valverde, Paul B. Thompson
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Professor Thompson responds to Valverde's argument, in the last issue, that his approach to Risk puts too much emphasis on the distinction between Risk subjectivism and Risk objectivism. In doing so, he asserts, inter alia, that anchoring Risk judgments in a probabilistic framework does not go far enough in rejecting reigning Risk-analysis notions of "real Risk."
Aristotle, Kant, And The Ethics Of The Young Marx, Philip J. Kain
Aristotle, Kant, And The Ethics Of The Young Marx, Philip J. Kain
Philosophy
I would like to argue that the young Marx's ethical views have been influenced not only by Hegel but even more so by Aristotle and Kant. Marx draws away from Hegel's concept of essence toward one more like Aristotle's, and he operates with a concept of universalization similar to that found in Kant's categorical imperative. At the same time, Marx's task is to reconcile these Aristotelian and Kantian elements.
Marx's main concern, however, is not simply to explain what morality is but to explain how it can be realized in the world. For us to understand his views we first …

Tone In Komo, John Paul Thomas
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "My purpose is to continue to comprehensively present and analyze Komo sound patterns as was begun in Thomas (to appear). Whereas that paper is principally concerned with advanced tongue root (ATR) and vowel height harmony, here the concentration is on tonal processes."
A Comparison Of Organizational, Structural, And Relationship Effects On Subordinates’ Upward Influence Choices, Kathleen J. Krone
A Comparison Of Organizational, Structural, And Relationship Effects On Subordinates’ Upward Influence Choices, Kathleen J. Krone
Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
This research examined the extent to which organizational membership, centralization of authority, and subordinates’ perceptions of supervisory relationship quality affected how frequently they report using different types of tactics in their upward influence attempts. Participants from five different organizations were surveyed. A typology of upward influence tactics was created based on the extent to which: (1) the means employed to attempt influence are open or closed, and (2) the desired outcomes are openly expressed or left undisclosed. The resulting dependent variable consisted of three types of tactics: open upward influence, strategic upward influence, and political upward influence. MANOVA results indicated …

Preposed And Postposed Adverbials In English, Stephen H. Levinsohn
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction: "Does it make any difference whether an adverbial clause like when the wolf arrived precedes the main verb ore follows it? For example, do (1a) and (1b) (which allude to the tale of "The Three Little Pigs") mean the same? And what about the same sentence with the subordination reversed, as in (1c,d)?
"(1) a. When the wolf arrived, he was picking apples. b. He was picking apples when the wolf arrived. c. When/While he was picking apples, the wolf arrived. d. The wolf arrived when/while he was picking apples.

Danish Folk High Schools - Their Influence In America, Joan Mcinnes
Danish Folk High Schools - Their Influence In America, Joan Mcinnes
The Bridge
This is a personal story. It is an attempt to trace my philosophy of adult continuing education (ACE) to my roots in Denmark and to uncover the reasons why entering the Adult Education Program at Northern Illinois University (NIU) felt like coming home after many years of trying to find a place in a society that was philosophically out of harmony with my essence. Throughout my degree program, I have noticed that whenever Highlander Folk School was discussed in classes or in the literature, it struck a chord with me. This feeling went unexplored due to time constraints or other …
The Significance Of The Private Letter In Immigration History, Niels Peter Stilling
The Significance Of The Private Letter In Immigration History, Niels Peter Stilling
The Bridge
The title of this paper is two-sided. The private letter is an important source for understanding the psychological and human aspects of immigration. It is also important to note that until recently historians have shown much too little interest in the documents from the immigrants themselves. My hypothesis, which I intend to discuss here, is that the private letter was the most important stimulating pull-factor in immigration history. In certain periods a call for USA was put forward in most letter series. Praising various aspects of American life, private letters were written to draw relatives or friends across the Atlantic. …

The Bridge
Those of you who grew up in the old A.E.L.C. will relate to much of what I write. You will be able to give names from your congregation to many of those whom I will describe. I will use vignettes, stories, some fact and some fiction. Hence, the title, Tales.

Books
Genocide is a modern term whereby groups of people are killed on the basis of their religion, race, ethnicity, or nationality. This book suggest that modernity and the tremendous social differentiation that is a part of our modern world may, in part, be to blame. The authors examine textbook 20th century horrors: from the massacre of the Armenians, to the planned famine in the Ukraine, to the Holocaust, and links of modern warfare to genocide. By studying cases of genocide, the authors hope to inform and connect to all other efforts to understand and to prevent the mass destruction …
