Animal Rights Vs. Humanism: The Charge Of Speciesism, Kenneth J. Shapiro
Animal Rights Vs. Humanism: The Charge Of Speciesism, Kenneth J. Shapiro
Animal Welfare Collection
The present article examines a concern I have had for some time about the compatibility of humanistic psychology with the emerging animal rights movement. Beyond working out my position, the paper has the additional educational and, frankly, political purpose of bringing animal rights issues to the attention of humanistic psychologists.
The article applies certain concepts of contemporary animal rights philosophy, notably "speciesism," to both the philosophy of humanism and humanistic psychology. While on a philosophical level, certain concepts are discussed that would likely block a rapprochement, I feel that humanistic psychologists as individuals are likely to extend their compassion to …

Olmos Park And The Creation Of A Suburban Bastion, Char Miller, Heywood T. Sanders
Olmos Park And The Creation Of A Suburban Bastion, Char Miller, Heywood T. Sanders
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
An examination of this small Texas community will also cast light on the larger world of which it was a part. The development of Olmos Park, then, was inextricably bound up with and reflective of the political machinations and social problems that dominated San Antonio in the first decades of this century. As Mauerman understood, the suburb was a fragment of the urban whole, an observation that needs to be pushed one step farther. The forces that shaped Olmos Park and determined its relations with San Antonio were also part of a national pattern, of tensions generated by the explosive …
The Rise Of Urban Texas, Char Miller, David R. Johnson
The Rise Of Urban Texas, Char Miller, David R. Johnson
Pomona Faculty Publications and Research
Texas contains three of the nation's ten largest cities, but their existence has not yet affected the hold that the state's rural heritage has on Texas' imagination--or so Texans' attachment to two nineteenth-century cultural landmarks, the Alamo and the Chisholm Trail, would suggest. As the shrine of Texas liberty, the Alamo continually generates elegies to the manly courage and bravery of the fallen heroes of 1836.
Testing Game-Theoretic Models Of Price-Fixing Behaviour, Vassilis A. Hajivassiliou
Testing Game-Theoretic Models Of Price-Fixing Behaviour, Vassilis A. Hajivassiliou
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper analyzes price fixing by the Joint Executive Committee railroad cartel from 1880 to 1886 and develops tests of two game-theoretic models of tacit collusion. The first model, due to Abreu, Pearce and Stacchetti (1986), predicts that price will switch across regimes according to a Markov process. The second, by Rotemberg and Saloner (1986), postulates that price wars are more likely in periods of high industry demand. Switching regressions are used to model the firms’ shifting between collusive and punishment behavior. The main econometric novelty in the estimation procedures introduced in this paper is that misclassification probabilities are allowed …
Reactions To Disability: An Empirical Investigation Of Their Nature And Structure, Hanoch Livneh, Richard F. Antonak
Reactions To Disability: An Empirical Investigation Of Their Nature And Structure, Hanoch Livneh, Richard F. Antonak
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper describes the initial steps toward the construction of an experimental, multidimensional inventory to measure reactions to physical disability. The Relations to Impairment and Disability Inventory (RIDI) was developed to provide information on eight patterns of psychosocial reactions to disability, namely: shock, anxiety, denial, depression, internalized anger, externalized hostility, acknowledgement and adjustment. Data are presented on initial psychometric analyses of the inventory. Analyses of the eight scales supported their homogeneity and relative independence, and the inventory's construct validity was partially documented. A moderately high degree of relationship was found between the Acknowledgement and Adjustment scales and the Acceptance of …
Climate Trends In Iowa, Richard E. Carlson
Climate Trends In Iowa, Richard E. Carlson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Long-term trends for various weather elements are presented for the period 1900-1988. Summer and winter season, and annual air temperature patterns are statistically weak because of large inrerannual variability, but trends are evident. There was a general warming from 1900 until the 40's, with a leveling or slight cooling following. Since the mid-70's, a warming trend seems to be taking place, but this cannot be confirmed. Spring season air temperatures showed no trend except that the most recent 4 years (1985-1988) were decidedly warmer than normal. Winter season air temperatures showed a change in trend in the 30's, but the …

Computed Normal Range Of Iowa Statewide July Precipitation, H. C. Vaughan, D. S. Sheets, G. R. White
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Iowa summer rainfall distributions are examined to identify small-scale anomalies. Examination of extremely wet and dry summer months shows that large rain amounts fall mainly in small, cellular areas for both extremely wet and dry months. These configurations result from individual rainfall events. Analysis of the distribution of mean July rainfall across the state reveals significant anomalous wet and dry regions that contrast with the background, east-west rainfall gradient. Because of the skewed nature of summer rainfall distributions, the median value is used to represent a more realistic expected rainfall amount for any given year. Some parts of the stare …

Remarks Prepared For Delivery By Clayton Yeutter Secretary Of Agriculture To The Chicago Farmers, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers
It's a great pleasure for me to be back in Chicago, especially when it means seeing so many friends and acquaintances. I'd like to thank The Chicago Farmers for extending to me this invitation to talk with you today about America's agricultural future. As you know, Congress is struggling to resolve differences between their respective versions of the 1990 Farm Bill. What you may not know -- and what I'd like to discuss with you today -- is that in several notable instances neither version reflects what America's farmers have asked for, nor what America's farmers, as well as America's …

Remarks Prepared For Delivery To The Journal Of Commerce And The National Foreign Trade Council's Uruguay Round Conference By Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeutier, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers
It is time to quit pretending that supply management works as a farm income enhancement program. It may in the short run; it doesn't in the long run. It is time to stop pretending that protectionist trade policies help America's agriculture. They may in the short run; they don't in the long run.

Remarks Prepared For Delivery To The Organization For Economic Cooperation And Development Ministerial Meeting By U.S. Secretary Of Agriculture Clayton Yeuiter, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers
This is a particularly important time for us to be gathering for this Ministerial meeting. The Uruguay Round of negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) is entering a crucial period. It is imperative that the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) make a strong statement of support for freer and fairer trade in all fields, including agriculture. The nations of the world are looking to the OECD to clearly point the way toward an improved world trading system.

It is a pleasure for me to be with you today at the annual meeting of the International Office of Epizootics. I would first like to congratulate the recipients of your gold and silver awards, which I am sure are well-deserved. I also want to state how much the United States has appreciated the efforts of Director-General Blajan. Although we have only been a member of OlE since 1978, we have developed great respect for this organization. OlE is held in high regard throughout the world, and the firm and competent leadership of Dr. Blajan has been a major reason …

SEC. YEUTTER: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to this auspicious tree-planting ceremony. We're delighted to have you all here. That's quite a tree that we're going to be planting. I'm not sure we're going to get that job done with two shovels, but maybe that depends on how fast people shovel. At any rate, we'll give you some experience in that regard very shortly. As we begin the program, I'd like to spend just two minutes giving the essence of what the morning's activity is about. Then, I'll introduce some of our special guests here, and then, of …

Clayton Yeutter Secretary Of Agriculture Before The Senate Committee On Agriculture, Nutrition, And Forestry February 7, 1990, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Papers
Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee, I welcome the invitation to appear today to discuss the 1990 Farm Bill. The making of farm policy in 1990 will be truly historic. The road that we take over the coming months will be vital to u.s. farmers, the American public, and, in fact, the world. As you know, we have been working very hard at the USDA and within the Administration for many months to develop proposals that we believe will best serve our nation's food and fiber industries and all Americans. Yesterday we unveiled our ideas. This morning, I would …

This Article initially will compare the United States Constitution and the British constitution both to evaluate Young, Morrison, and Misretta, and to develop a sounder approach to all structural issues. Comparative constitutional law provides some of the "experience" needed to decide abstract structural cases. Predicting the reverberations of a proposed change within a system will be easier if one has studied how similar alterations have affected similar organizations. The British constitution is particularly germane because it was a model for the American Constitution. The two countries have a shared legal tradition and frequently generate similar positive law. The British constitution …
