Man/Hombre/Homme: Meeting Male Reproductive Health Care Needs In Latin America, Debbie Rogow, Judith Bruce, Ann Leonard Jan 1990

Man/Hombre/Homme: Meeting Male Reproductive Health Care Needs In Latin America, Debbie Rogow, Judith Bruce, Ann Leonard

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This edition of Quality/Calidad/Qualité answers the following question: how can family planning programs understand and better serve the interests of men? The proposals in the article are derived from the experience of PRO-PATER, in São Paulo, Brazil, and briefly, from the activities of the Profamilia Men’s Clinic in Colombia. The experiences of both PRO-PATER and Profamilia suggest that, although the reproductive health needs of men may be different from those of women, they are still very interested. It is clear that there is abundant demand for high-quality services that offer convenience, confidentiality, information, attentive providers, and attention to reproductive health …

Growth And Distribution: A Neoclassical Kaldor-Robinson Exercise, James Tobin Jan 1990

Growth And Distribution: A Neoclassical Kaldor-Robinson Exercise, James Tobin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Kaldor’s capital/labor income distribution theory relied on differential saving propensities from profits and wages. Robinson’s growth models typically specified constant-coefficient technologies in which marginal productivities cannot determine distribution. Here these two insights are combined in a two-sector (capital goods, consumption goods) economy. Two technologies are available, but only as either-or alternatives. The choice of technology and the income distribution depend on the saving propensities. Steady-state consumption need not be greater when the economy is more capitalized and profit rates are lower.

Radon Measurements In Houses In Eastern And Central Iowa, C. V. Weiffenbach, T. J. Hart

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Radon concentrations in air in main floor areas of 213 houses in Central and Eastern Iowa were measured with alpha track detectors integrating over periods of five months to one year. Forty-two houses in Central Iowa had significantly higher radon concentrations (lognormal distribution with geometric mean 2.1 pCi/L, geometric standard deviation 2.2, and arithmetic mean 2.75 pCi/L) than 171 houses studied in Eastern Iowa (geometric mean 1.6 pCi/L, geometric standard deviation 2.2, arithmetic mean 2.1 pCi/L). Significant differences in radon levels were found among different categories of houses with regard to ventilation rate, basement construction, and cracks and openings in …

Quality Of Life Issues In Residential Services For Elderly People : Perceptions Of Service Providers, Val Roche

Research outputs pre 2011

The report contains feedback from a study undertaken by students enrolled in the Residential Care Unit, a part of the A.D.A. Working with the Aged course. The subject for study was "Quality of life in residential services for elderly people. This was seen as an important area for investigation because the number of elderly people will increase to 15 per cent of Australia's population by the year 2021, and it is likely that even with more community support services, some people will need residential care...

Short Subjects: Georgia Ghosts, Or Where Are They Now?: One Researcher's Catalog Of Georgia's Missing Historical Records, Robert S. Davis Jr.

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

Ghosts haunt places like attics, old barns, and university libraries. They live in the minds of researchers seeking in frustration that missing document, pamphlet, or book mentioned in an earlier source. Even when the text of a document has survived in some form, researchers sometimes have gone to great lengths to find the original manuscript for the assurance that nothing more can be found there.

Understanding Dogs Through Kinesthetic Empathy, Social Construction, And History, Kenneth J. Shapiro Jan 1990

Understanding Dogs Through Kinesthetic Empathy, Social Construction, And History, Kenneth J. Shapiro

Sentience Collection

The term, "come into animal presence," she takes from the title of a Denise Levertov poem. The poem, which reads, in part, "What joy when the insouciant armadillo glances at us and doesn't quicken his trotting across the track into the palm bush. What is this joy?" This joy is the possibility of our being in the presence of animals for "(t)he armadillo has some intention to pursue in the palm forest." This joy, to which I invite you here, consists in dwelling in that presence, in inhabiting that intention, that armored but guileless world of the armadillo. I will …

Animal Welfare, Animal Rights And Agriculture, Bernard E. Rollin Jan 1990

Animal Welfare, Animal Rights And Agriculture, Bernard E. Rollin

Animal Welfare Collection

The past decade has witnessed a major revolution in social concern with animals. Philosophically, this revolution entails a significant revision in traditional ways of conceiving our mod obligations to other creatures. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the social and conceptual basis for what is widely termed “animal rights.” The agricultural community has mistakenly tended to dismiss this new thinking as tkinge and emotionally based. In actuality, it is a natural extension of earlier social thought. The case of new laws regulating biomedical research illustrates the rapidity of social change in this area, as do recent developments in European regulation …
