Technological change and overlapping social, environmental. educational and political issues have increased the need for understandable communications among the different countries of the world. Because English is wldely used. many Americans have no other language capability and are at a disadvantage in many situations. In addition, changes in the ethnic composition of the United States have intensified the need for skills in other languages. The need for second-language skills is perhaps greater among agriculturalists than it is for other areas. The Cooperative Extension System has Important roles to play in expanding these communication skills.

Use Of Storytelling By Iowa Elementary Library Media Specialists, Frances E. Lachance

Seventy-five percent of 41 randomly selected Iowa public school library media specialists who answered a storytelling questionnaire in November, 1990, indicated that they used one or more storytelling activities with students in grades prekindergarten to six. Eleven of the 12 storytelling activities were used more with students in grades three or below than they were with students in grades four to six. Just 22% of the library media specialists indicated that they taught students to do storytelling, and this activity was done about equally with upper and lower elementary students.

This edition of Quality/Calidad/Qualité answers the following question: how can family planning programs understand and better serve the interests of men? The proposals in the article are derived from the experience of PRO-PATER, in São Paulo, Brazil, and briefly, from the activities of the Profamilia Men’s Clinic in Colombia. The experiences of both PRO-PATER and Profamilia suggest that, although the reproductive health needs of men may be different from those of women, they are still very interested. Ever since Aristotle asserted that "the greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor," numerous scholars have studied and written about the nature and functions of metaphor.¹ The vast majority of these scholars have focused on metaphor as a distinctive use of language that has various rhetorical functions.² Recently, however, some scholars have begun to dig deeper into the topic, investigating the possibility that metaphor is not only a form of speech, but more fundamentally a form of thought, having basic epistemological functions.³ With regard to science, for instance, such scholars as Arbib and …

The Medical Device Amendments of 1976 (Public Law 94-295) consolidated and expanded existing federal authority over manufacturers of medical devices. This meant that any medical device manufactured after the Medical Device Amendment of 1976 needed to establish that it is substantially equivalent in terms of content, composition, intended use and related risk. This study was designed to investigate the influences on the process of notifying the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of an orthopaedic medical device manufacturer's intent to market a product. An effective school is one in which there are overall high levels of achievement sustained over time and in which students from the lower socioeconomic (SES) subgroups are performing at levels comparable to higher SES groups. Through a case study methodology, the author analyzed the degree of effectiveness in eight elementary schools and factors that contributed to attaining this level of effectiveness. Over a five year period, data were collected at each school through interviews, effective schools surveys, CAP test results, and other school records. Strategies For Increasing Contraceptive Use In Factories In Barbados, Charles Alleyne, Elrene Sealy, Pauline Russell-Brown

This report outlines results of a study on factory-based family planning operations. The 18-month study compared the relative effectiveness of two interventions: 1) ongoing contraceptive distribution by a trained factory employee supported by monthly education visits by the Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA); and 2) monthly service and education visits by the BFPA. Service and survey data indicated that the education/information program component was stronger than the contraceptive delivery component. There were remarkable increases in the employees' knowledge of contraceptive methods, especially in factories with employee distributors.

This is a study of the internal and external experiences of women who have been breast surgery patients and have been forced to make adjustments in many areas of their lives. The study focused on the necessity of the breast cancer patient to face life in an altered state , which affects her physical , social, emotional and sexual well-being , as well as confronting her with the issues of death and dying.

It proposes a heretofore untried course of pre-bereavement family counseling and then proposes a research model which may determine whether such intervention can positively affect the relative health of the family members during the period of mourning following the death of the patient. Men and women between the ages of 18 and 29 were the subjects of a study designed to explore their gender preferences for their children , to examine the stated reasons for the preferences, and to consider the implications of these attitudes for the subjects and society as a whole . Four-hundred and forty- three respondents completed a one- page questionnaire addressing these issues and requesting data regarding sex, age , and marital status . The results were then compared to those of previous studies focusing on the issue of gender preference from the 1950s and 1970s. The new generation …

Basic Communication Course Annual

This article recommends some changes that should occur in the basic course. The prescriptions are based on four notions: the course must include accurate information; it should be inclusive in nature; it must be responsive to our contemporary world and to our students' current and future communicative needs; and it must provide a unique contribution to our students' education. The authors suggest that the course has not been sufficiently attentive to accuracy, inclusiveness, responsiveness and uniqueness; furthermore, contemporary changes require increased vigilance in these areas.

Communication Apprehension In The Basic Course: Learning Styles And Preferred Instructional Strategies Of High And Low Apprehensive Students, John Bourhis, Charlene Berquist

Students who experience high levels of communication apprehension are at a distinct disadvantage in school when compared to those who do not. This is particularly true in basic courses in public speaking and interpersonal communication which students may be required to take to satisfy general education requirements. This study examines the relationship between communication apprehension, learning style, and preferred instructional strategies for students enrolled in a basic course in interpersonal communication. The results indicate that communication-apprehensive students are more passive than active in their learning styles. Both low and high communication-apprehensive students prefer instructional strategies which are consistent with their …
