The "New Age Movement": A Case Study, Zachary Grant Goodell

Within the last two decades, the United States has witnessed the growth of a phenomenon which the media has referred to as "The New Age Movement". This multi-faceted social pattern includes astrology, meditation, mysticism, and eastern philosophies, the popularity of which have increased significantly in the 1980's. This thesis is a case study of the "New Age Movement". First, I develop a descriptive model of the key ideological themes and organizational structures of this social pattern. Traditional And Nontraditional Data As Indicators Of Economic Activity In Rural Communities, Richard Mchugh, Ronald Cooper, Sheila A. Martin, Daniel Otto, Stanley R. Johnson

The objective of this study was twofold: (1) to identify nontraditional sources of data that can be used to monitor economic activity in rural areas, and (2) to test the relationship between such data and trends in traditional measures, such as income and employment.

The need for alternative sources of data arises primarily out of the inconsistent quality and availability of traditional economic data at the subs tate level. New sources of data can help reduce this metro-rural data gap and provide a fuller picture of the diverse experience and structure of subs tate economies.

Growth And Distribution: A Neoclassical Kaldor-Robinson Exercise, James Tobin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Kaldor’s capital/labor income distribution theory relied on differential saving propensities from profits and wages. Robinson’s growth models typically specified constant-coefficient technologies in which marginal productivities cannot determine distribution. Here these two insights are combined in a two-sector (capital goods, consumption goods) economy. Two technologies are available, but only as either-or alternatives. The choice of technology and the income distribution depend on the saving propensities. Steady-state consumption need not be greater when the economy is more capitalized and profit rates are lower.

Predicting Adolescent Cognitive And Self-Regulatory Competencies From Preschool Delay Of Gratification: Identifying Diagnostic Conditions, Yuichi Shoda, Walter Mischel, Philip K. Peake

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Variations of the self-imposed delay-of-gratification situation in preschool were compared to determine when individual differences in this situation may predict aspects of cognitive and self-regulatory competence and coping in adolescence. Preschool children from a university community participated in experiments that varied features of the self-imposed delay situation. Experimental analyses of the cognitive-attentional processes that affect waiting in this situation helped identify conditions in which delay behavior would be most likely to reflect relevant cognitive and attentional competencies. As hypothesized, in those conditions, coherent patterns of statistically significant correlations were found between seconds of delay time in such conditions in preschool …

Clinical Sociology Review

Many of the problems that clients bring to clinical sociologists are caused by dysfunctional social roles that they are unable to change. These roles are often fixed in place by dysfunctional variations of the mechanisms that normally stabilize role structures. The cognitive, emotional, volitional, and social components of role scripts that ordinarily keep roles from changing also serve to maintain painful ones. Understanding how they accomplish this is the first step toward facilitating effective personal growth.

The Development Of Contemporary Clinical Sociology, Elizabeth J. Clark

Clinical Sociology Review

While clinical sociologists have been part of American sociology for well over fifty years, it has been only the last decade that the field of clinical sociology has become formalized and has gained acceptance as having a legitimate role in contemporary sociology. The history and development of this renewed interest in clinical sociology parallels the history and development of the Clinical Sociology Association (currently called the Sociological Practice Association). This paper gives an overview of the movement, differentiates current uses of the terms "clinical sociology," "applied sociology," and "sociological practice," and discusses directions for the next decade.

A Technique For Predicting Intraorganizational Action, Robert C. Anderson

Clinical Sociology Review

This paper is addressed to the problem of forging a closer link between theoretical and empirical analysis of a given organization. An analytic research method and instrument capable of systematically transforming certain theoretical organizational concepts into operational form is presented. The technique and its instrumentation were designed to, when fitted with appropriate theoretical substantive variables, efficiently yet accurately describe, explain, and predict the consequences of changing specified organizational variables within an organization.
