As the life and health insurance industry evaluates its long-term financial goals, the cloud of Black Monday — October 19, 1987, the day the stock market collapsed — blurs its cherished investment income projections. With investment portfolios under siege, mutual life insurance companies and stock companies alike are wary of making policy-pricing miscalculations that could prove to be disastrous. Counseling psychology advocates a position of neutrality where religious issues are concerned. This position appears benign at first glance, but upon closer examination we find that psychology has been strongly influenced by modern humanistic thought. In his book Psychology as Religion: The Cult of Self-Worship, Paul Vitz (1977) states, "Psychology has become as religion, in particular, a form of secular humanism based on the worship of self" (p. 9). Vitz alleges that humanistic psychology is being practiced as an anti-Christian religion.

This project presents an expressive therapy program with preschool-aged victims of a natural disaster . Primary process level communication is discussed as the underlying mechanism in the expressive therapy process . The suitability of expressive therapy methods is examined through informal interviews with parents and teachers, observations by the program facilitator , and the products the children created . The expressive therapy procedure was shown to be suitable f o r this age group . Explaining Policy Failure: Japan And The International Economy, 1969-1971, Robert C. Angel

This paper examines the determinants of Japan's most serious postwar blunder: failure to define and implement effective and timely countermeasures to deal with its change from deficit to surplus international monetary status during the 1969-1971 period. It concludes that intense bureaucratic compartmentalization and a lack of supra-ministerial leadership of national policy were key determinants of this failure, leaving Japan's political system dependent upon irresistible external pressure (gai-atsu), in this case from the United States, to define and force implementation of necessary policy changes. Many of the writers, conceptual developers, and advocates of a National Service Program for the United States credit William James with issuing, in 1910, the first call to youth to be enlisted in a program entitled "The Moral Equivalent of War,'' The program was envisioned to engage youth in industrial work and social service, according to their skills and interests. While that did not come to fruition, we saw some forms of it instituted during the bleak days and years of the Great Depression in the 1930's. The thesis that I want to advance is a simple one: It is that service is rooted in religion. Service is religious in the sense that it expresses our bondedness with the universe (religare: to bind fast), and by extension with one another. Over time, service-oriented activities may become rationalized, institutionalized, and secularized. But the roots of service remain religious.

The impact of a new convention center or a new firm entering or leaving a region requires the use of multipliers to estimate the full economic effect. Multipliers account for the interactions from industries to industries and from industries to households and back, and are produced easily from input-output studies.

Researchers from the Center for Applied Urban Research examined the economic impact of the Nebraska School for the Deaf (NSD) on the Omaha area and the state. The impact of the NSD reaches far beyond its primary function of providing educational opportunities for deaf children in Nebraska, therefore, measuring its value is difficult.

The Impact Of Volunteer Experience On Adolescent Social Development: Evidence Of Program Effects, Stephen F. Hamilton, L. Mickey Fenzel

The Social and Personal Responsibility Scale was employed in a study of the Youth Volunteers program, involving 44 adolescents in 12 projects, equally divided between child care and community service. Participants showed statistically significant gains on the Social Responsibility sub-scale. Girls gained more than boys and volunteers in community improvement projects gained more than those in child care. However, as in previous studies, gains were quite modest. Testimony from adolescents and adult participants was more strongly positive, volunteers citing improvement in their knowledge of themselves and others and the acquisition of new skills, adults seeing greater willingness to make decisions. …

Interest in "service-learning" is on the rise these days. The so-called apathy of the late nineteen seventies and early eighties has given way to a renewed upsurge in student activisim and public and community service. The Campus Compact coalition of university presidents has supported these efforts on their campuses through the strengthening of campus public service programs and through advocacy for "higher education for social responsibility" at the national level. One national commission after another includes community service or internship-based learning as a key recommendation for the reform of the undergraduate curriculum.
