It was hypothesized that subjects who took the role of interaction observers ration than actors would predict a closer relationship between attitudes and behaviors and would report greater confidence in behavioral predictions derivable from an actor's attitude statements. One hundred sixty-eight subjects assumed the role of either actor or observer in scenarios of group interactions in which a central person made a statement about a particular attitude object. As predicted, subjects in the observer role reported that specific future behaviors (e.g., loaning money, helping to study for a test) had a greater likelihood of occurrence following an attitude statement (e.g., …

As a part of a study ostensibly concerned with conceptual ability, 120 male and 92 female undergraduates were asked to perform a boring task that consisted of generating random numbers for 20 minutes. The experimenter presented herself as being either attractive or unattractive, and made either favorable or unfavorable comments in describing the task. Following performance of the task, subjects rated it on either signed or unsigned questionnaires. Prior findings were replicated since a direct relationship was obtained between subjects' task evaluations and experimenter's opinion only when the experimenter was attractive; when she behaved unattractively, her opinion had no effect. …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate certain factors that affect the quality of life experienced by the chronic hemodialysis patient population served by the Artificial Kidney Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center, Portland, Oregon. The intent of the study was to discover if there was a significant difference in quality of life between patients who dialyzed at home and patients at the Artificial Kidney Unit (center patients).

The ability to recognize when the needs of the individual student call for procedures beyond the scope of the school is a professional necessity. Previous research has indicated a developmental tendency toward greater repetition choice and recall of interrupted tasks than for completed tasks. The present study investigated this relationship and the possibility that observing versus performing a task might have differential effects on recall and repetition choice. Thirteen ten year old and eleven year old boys (performers) individually assembled eighteen jig-saw puzzles of birds and animals. Twenty-four peers of the same age (observers) observers puzzle assembly. Contrary to previous research, no significant tendency was found for older participants to recall and to choose to repeat more interrupted tasks than for younger participants. However, …

Twenty-seven students enrolled in a first year Graphics Course at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario were rated on creativity by two groups of experts, a self rating and by the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT) Figural Forms A and B (Torrance, 1966) and self-actualization by the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) (Shostrom, 1964) before and after a three month meditation program. Aggressive behaviour (as measured by “minutes in aggressive penalties”) and players’ perceived attitudes were investigated at four levels of hockey—pee wee and midget (major All Star), Junior A (Jr. A) and the National Hockey League (NHL). No support was found for the hypotheses suggesting that minutes in aggressive penalties occur as a function of differences in weight (light or heavy), position (forward or defense), skill (“less-skilled” or “more-skilled”), or years in league (rookie or veteran). The midget sample incurred significantly more minutes in aggressive penalties per player per 60 minutes of game time than did the other three samples.

In an experiment on the influence of noun imagery on the speed of naming visually presented nouns, it was found that high-imagery nouns were named, on an average, 14 msec faster than low-imagery nouns. The difference, although small, was highly significant [F(l,14) = 10.04]. The magnitude of this effect was about one-third of that obtained when subjects were required to identify the grammaticality of phrases containing these same nouns, indicating that speed of encoding was probably a more important factor than speed of recognition in producing a noun imagery effect in speed of grammaticality judgments.

This experiment investigated speed of processing the grammaticality of phrases consisting of the adjective "one" or "two" followed by a singular or plural noun. The subject's task was to press one of two keys, depending upon whether the phrase was grammatically correct or incorrect. There were eight types of phrases, formed by the factorial combinations of singular or plural adjectives, singular or plural nouns, and high or low noun imagery. These served as within-subjects variables. Between-subjects variables were the factorial combinations of sex of subject, duration of stimulus phrase (.2 or 2.5 sec), and hand assigned to the correct-grammar key. …

Data were obtained from 186 applicants at a large Midwestern bank to test the hypothesized advantage of employing a continuous as opposed to a dichotomous criterion when predicting consumer installment credit risk. A continuous criterion of cost was derived and regressed on 21 background items obtained from the application blank (e.g., number of dependents, total monthly income, present indebtedness, etc.). The maximum step of the regression analysis yielded a multiple squared correlation coefficient of .24. The purpose of the study was the development of the Self-Death Awareness Scale (SDAS), an instrument that is intended to measure the awareness of the fact that a person is mortal and is going to eventually die. The experimental instrument was administered to 100 persons equally divided into four age groups (ages 17-83). It was hypothesized that age and the SDAS were correlated with older persons being more aware of their own mortality than younger subjects. The present study was designed to determine whether physical distance between male and female interviewees and a female interviewer affected verbal productivity and anxiety level when interviewees discussed academic, social, and personal topics. The interview was conceptualized as an information-gathering interview. Crucial variables in such interviews are client participation and information flow. Client verbal productivity appears to be directly related to these variables, and was used as one dependent variable to measure the impact of distance on interviewee verbal behavior. A self-report measure of anxiety, the Fear Thermometer was used as a second dependent variable.
