This article reviews scholarship of incorporating institutional objectives in academic courses and proposes a method to embed mission-critical competencies in a library instruction course. Few academic institutions focus their mission or core competencies on digital communication. LaGuardia Community College delineates three competencies in its mission: inquiry and problem solving, global learning, and integrative learning. Students exhibit command of these competencies in written, oral, or digital communication. The College defines the digital communication ability as successful collaboration and interaction using online tools, such as discussion boards, either to stage written exchange, or to capture video or oral discussions. This report details the results of a study examining the teaching practices of business faculty at the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, City University of New York. Aim Undergraduate nutrition and dietetics students need to develop research skills and professional competencies to identify evidence-based nutrition and food studies research. Research skills are essential for student success in dietetic internships, graduate school, and future professional practice as nutrition and dietetics professionals. In the spirit of this year’s theme of “opening access,” our panel highlights how library faculty are making technology more accessible for the CUNY community. Despite the rising costs of journal prices and the stagnation of library budgets, librarians have employed low-cost and free techniques to improve access to library services. The panelists’ projects provide helpful examples of CUNY librarians’ work to increase access for our communities through technology.

This study examines how faculty perceived information literacy classes provided by Queensborough Community College. A survey was distributed in the spring of 2017 via faculty e-mail. The survey focused on the faculty’s department affiliation, usage of information literacy (IL) instruction, and how they value the IL instruction. The results revealed that the highest proportion of faculty members who brought their students to the library and found it the most useful were the English and the Speech department, while faculty in the STEM fields were least likely to utilize the library instruction because they found it was irrelevant to their courses.

Mobile devices have become more ubiquitous among academic library users. It’s now common to see through analytics that smartphones, tablet computers, e-readers, and even portable gaming consoles are connecting to online library services. This chapter is a case study of how a small academic library supported its users through the creation of a mobile-optimized library website. Designed for pre-college and first-year students new to conducting independent research, this is a lesson plan for an activity that is part of a workshop to strengthen students’ skills in using books for research. The activity includes small groups coming to consensus about a hypothetical shelf order for a set of books, and a larger class discussion about the Library of Congress call number system as a useful-to-know but ultimately arbitrary system created within a particular historical context. Purpose – The paper aims to discuss the relationship between interdepartmental stakeholders in higher education and the information identified as a result of collaborations. It proposes that collaborations can help clarify issues to then advocate for them.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper opted for a naturalistic case study design, gathering direct and participant observation of interdepartmental collaborations including 1 Student Share, 12 one-hour collaborative sessions and 1 Accessibility Conference.

On May 3, 2013, the two Hostos librarians teamed up with two librarians of Lehman College’s Leonard Lief Library at the Bronx EdTech Showcase to address the challenges and joys of e-books. Lehman College’s Leonard Lief Library and Information Technology Division launched the Lehman Master’s Thesis Repository on its new Sharepoint portal in September 2011. The project team consisted of two librarians and three IT engineers. The presentation will outline the project’s development including rationale, the decision to host the repository on the Sharepoint portal, access issues, migration of data, custom programming, best practices and conclusions on the benefits of Library-IT collaboration.
