On Implementation Of Bounding Surface Plasticity Models With No Overshooting Effect In Solving Boundary Value Problems, Mojtaba E. Kan, Hossein Taiebat

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a new scheme that can be used to overcome the overshooting effect, one of the well known problems occurs during application of bounding surface plasticity models in numerical analysis of boundary value problems. The scheme is based on definition of clouds of loading surfaces with a specific margin of strains within which unloading does not accompanied kinematic hardening. The basic concept of the scheme is introduced and the methodology and the relevant step by step algorithm to implement this scheme are presented. This scheme has been incorporated in the UNSW bounding surface model and implemented in a …

A Novel Tuning Method For Advanced Line Drop Compensator And Its Application To Response Coordination Of Distributed Generation With Voltage Regulating Devices, Kashem M. Muttaqi, An D. T Le, Michael Negnevitsky, Gerard Ledwich

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Nowadays, integration of small-scale electricity generators, known as Distributed Generation (DG), into distribution networks has become increasingly popular. This tendency together with the falling price of DG units has a great potential in giving the DG a better chance to participate in voltage regulation process, in parallel with other regulating devices already available in the distribution systems. The voltage control issue turns out to be a very challenging problem for distribution engineers, since existing control coordination schemes need to be reconsidered to take into account the DG operation. In this paper, a control coordination approach is proposed, which is able …

Suboptimal Mppt Control For Power Management In Pv-Diesel Remote Area Power Supply Systems, Yingjie Tan, Lasantha G. Meegahapola, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is commonly being used in solar-photovoltaic (PV) power generation systems to maximise solar energy extraction. In this paper it is proposed to operate the solar-PV system at the suboptimal MPPT to manage power balance in a remote area power supply (RAPS) system. This is performed based on three different operating modes: 1) Frequency control mode; 2) Active power control mode; 3) MPPT control mode. The operating modes are decided based on the load level and the operating mode of the diesel generator (i.e. synchronous condenser mode or generator mode). This power management strategy balances the …

Short-Term Load Forecasting Using Regression Based Moving Windows With Adjustable Window-Sizes, Dao Hoang Vu, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Ashish P. Agalgaonkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a regression based moving window model for solving the short-term electricity forecasting problem. Moving window approach is employed to trace the demand pattern based on the past history of load and weather data. Regression equation is then formed and least square method is used to determine the parameters of the model. In this paper, a new concept associated with cooling and heating degree is used to establish the relationship between electricity demand and temperature, which is one of the key climatic variables. In addition, Pearson's correlation has been employed to investigate the interdependency of electricity demand between …

Response Of The Al Σ5 〈001〉 Left {310} Symmetric Tilt Grain Boundary To The Shear Deformation Simulated By Molecular Dynamics, Kuiyu Cheng, Cheng Lu, A Kiet Tieu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In the present study, shear response of the Al [001] symmetrical tilting Σ5 (310) grain boundary (GB) was investigated by a three dimensional bicrystal at 500~750 K. It was found that the GB gradually rotated around the [001] tilt axis during the shear deformation due to the combination of surface strain, GB sliding and GB coupled motion. These rotated grain boundaries were Σ5 asymmetrical or symmetrical tilt grain boundaries and led to the normal stress σxx in the bicrystal system. It was also found that the response of the grain boundary to the shear deformation was closely related to the …

A Round-Robin Test With Thermal Simulation Of The Welding Haz To Draw Cct Diagrams: A Need For Harmonized Procedures And Microconstituent Terminologies, Americo Scotti, Huijun Li, Rosa M. Miranda

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Thermal simulations of heat affected zone (HAZ) have been widely used. This is an economic expedite process for phase transformation evaluations in steels when subjected to weld thermal cycles as well as to draw continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams. Different approaches for the simulation and parameter settings have been used by several researchers, yet leading to not always even results. Thus, it was proposed a round-robin test trial performed by different laboratories, aiming to evidence potential sources of error or inadequacy of the approaches. A High Strength Low Alloy (HSLA) steel was used as a case study. Despite the limited …

Deformation Characterization Of Micro Rolling For Stainless Steel Foil, Haibo Xie, Kenichi Manabe, Tsuyoshi Furushima, Kazuo Tada, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Physical parameters such as microscopic roughness become very important in micro forming process due to increasing surface to volume ratio. As a very important phenomenon in metal forming process, friction size effects are becoming more attracting for researchers because traditional models are not reliable. In this study, the micro rolling deformation characterization has been investigated with SUS 304 stainless steel considering the effect of lubricant, and there exists a sticking area in the contact zone. The evolution of surface roughness and oil film thickness are analyzed. The foil thickness plays an important role in the tribological features of rolling. All …

Formability Of Micro Sheet Hydroforming Of Ultra-Fine Grained Stainless Steel, Hideki Sato, Kenichi Manabe, Daiki Kondo, Dongbin Wei, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The formability of ultra-fine grained stainless steel is investigated in micro hydromechanical deep drawing. The materials used are ultra-fine grained stainless steel and SUS304-H with thickness of 20 and 50 m. The micro cups are successfully fabricated for the ultra-fine grained stainless steel but it cannot be fabricated for SUS304-H with thickness of 20 μm. The fracture type of ultra-fine grained stainless steel foil is the shortage of tensile strength at plain strain state and does not change with a decrease of the thickness. In contrast, the fracture type of SUS304-H foil changes to the bending deformation with decreasing the …

Numerical Study On Springback With Size Effect In Micro V-Bending, Zhi Fang, Haina Lu, Dongbin Wei, Zhengyi Jiang, Xianming Zhao, Di Wu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

With the development of microforming technology, the demand on accuracy of the metallic micro components is elevating. While springback phenomenon which is inevitable during bending process, can cause unpredicted dimensional error, bringing difficulties to the downstream assembly, and let alone the springback in microforming as the measurements of tools and workpieces downsize hundreds even thousands times. This paper focuses on the springback effect that occurs after the micro Vbending a classic processing method to manufacture microparts. Numerical simulation has been conducted to investigate the size effect in terms of Voronoi tessellation and springback. A finite element (FE) model of the …

Advanced Rolling Technologies For Producing Ultra-Finegrain/Nanostructured Alloys, Hailiang Yu, A Kiet Tieu, Cheng Lu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Ultrafine-grained materials show high strength at ambient temperature, high-speed superplastic deformation at elevated temperatures, and high corrosion resistance. Such materials have attracted increasing attention in the past twenty years. A number of severe plastic deformation techniques, such as equal-channel angular press, high pressure torsion, groove pressing, twist extrusion, asymmetric rolling, and accumulative roll bonding have been used to develop ultrafine-grained bulk materials. The equal-channel angular press, high pressure torsion, twist extrusion and groove pressing techniques suffer from some drawbacks: firstly, forming machines with large load capacities and expensive dies are indispensable for these processes; secondly, the productivity is relatively very …

Finite Element Method Analysis Of Micro Cross Wedge Rolling Of Metals, Zhengyi Jiang, Haina Lu, Dongbin Wei, Kezhi Linghu, Xianming Zhao, Xiaoming Zhang, Di Wu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A newly developed manufacturing technology - micro cross wedge rolling technology is an appropriate method to produce micro axisymmetric components such as micro stepped shafts. The development of this classic cold forming process is limited by a lack of sufficient understanding of geometric and material effects due to the size reduction of the components. In this study, a numerical model is proposed to simulate micro cross wedge rolling where the grain size effect is taken into account. Pure copper is chosen as the raw material. A finite element simulation is implemented where the diameter of the cylindrical workpiece is 0.8 …

A Combined Experimental And Simulation Method For Appraising The Energy Performance Of Green Roofs In Ningbo's Chinese Climate, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Jo Darkwa, Kate Yuan Jan 2014

A Combined Experimental And Simulation Method For Appraising The Energy Performance Of Green Roofs In Ningbo's Chinese Climate, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Jo Darkwa, Kate Yuan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A passive means of lowering the energy demand of buildings is the application of green roofs. The complexity between heat and moisture exchanges in green roof layers and the large variations of green roof types make the need for experimental or simulation assessments necessary for quantifying the energy benefits from green roofs. The current treatment of green roofs in simulation programs is either over-simplistic, for example by ignoring heat and moisture exchanges such as evapotranspiration, or the more advanced models have limitations and require inputs that are rarely available in practice. In this paper a combination of experimental and modelling …

Optimisation Of Size-Controllable Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation For Fem Simulation Of Micro Forming Processes, Liang Luo, Zhengyi Jiang, Haina Lu, Dongbin Wei, Kezhi Linghu, Xianming Zhao, Di Wu Jan 2014

Optimisation Of Size-Controllable Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation For Fem Simulation Of Micro Forming Processes, Liang Luo, Zhengyi Jiang, Haina Lu, Dongbin Wei, Kezhi Linghu, Xianming Zhao, Di Wu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Voronoi tessellation has been employed to characterise material features in Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation, however, a poor mesh quality of the voronoi tessellations causes problems in explicit dynamic simulation of forming processes. Although centroidal voronoi tessellation can partly improve the mesh quality by homogenisation of voronoi tessellations, small features, such as short edges and small facets, lead to an inferior mesh quality. Further, centroidal voronoi tessellation cannot represent all real micro structures of materials because of the almost equal tessellation shape and size. In this paper, a density function is applied to control the size and distribution of voronoi …

Support For The Integration Of Green Roof Constructions Within Chinese Building Energy Performance Policies, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Jo Darkwa Jan 2014

Support For The Integration Of Green Roof Constructions Within Chinese Building Energy Performance Policies, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Jo Darkwa

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Green roofs could act as a thermal buffer in buildings and offer potential energy savings. However, the energy benefits from green roofs are not usually properly recognised by traditional building energy regulations. Building energy regulations are traditionally over-simplistic during the assessment of the energy performance of complex building constructions. In the case of green roof designs, it is essential that the assessment mechanisms should not ignore the complex heat and moisture balances within the green roof layers. In this paper, dynamic energy modelling that considers the complexity within the green roof layers is adopted to guide policy makers in China …

Integrated Dehumidification And Downdraft Evaporative Cooling System For A Hot-Humid Climate, Sriraj Gokarakonda, Georgios Kokogiannakis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Unlike in hot-dry climates, in hot-humid climates evaporative cooling techniques are not readily suitable for space cooling. In order to effectively use evaporative cooling in hot-humid climates, dehumidification of ambient air is necessary before it passes over an evaporative medium for cooling. The present study explores the combined process of dehumidification and evaporation and its effect on thermal comfort in a typical small residential building located in a hot humid climate. A novel system has been investigated with the combination of an Earth Tube Ventilation (ETV) (for pre-cooling of air), a rotary wheel desiccant dehumidifier (for dehumidification) along with a …

A large-scale effort was carried out to test the performance of seven types of ionic electroactive polymer (IEAP) actuators in space-hazardous environmental factors in laboratory conditions. The results substantiate that the IEAP materials are tolerant to long-term freezing and vacuum environments as well as ionizing Gamma-, X-ray, and UV radiation at the levels corresponding to low Earth orbit (LEO) conditions. The main aim of this material behaviour investigation is to understand and predict device service time for prolonged exposure to space environment.

A Comparative Study For Wear Resistant Of Stellite 6 Coatings On Nickel Alloy Substrate Produced By Laser Cladding, Hvof And Plasma Spraying Techniques, Alain Kusmoko, Druce P. Dunne, Huijun Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Stellite 6 coatings were deposited using laser cladding, high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying and plasma spraying techniques on a nickel alloy substrate. The surface roughness, chemical composition and microstructure of these coatings were characterised by a surface profilometer, optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microhardness of the coatings was measured and the wear behaviour of the coatings was examined under controlled test conditions in a pin-on-plate (reciprocating) tribometer. The results showed that fully dense and crack-free laser clad Stellite 6 coatings can be formed on a high nickel steel substrate. Average microhardness values of the …

Mathematical Modeling And Experimental Verification Of Fluid Flow Through Deformable Rough Rock Joints, Buddhima Indraratna, Chandrasiri Kumara, Song-Ping Zhu, Scott Sloan Jan 2014

Mathematical Modeling And Experimental Verification Of Fluid Flow Through Deformable Rough Rock Joints, Buddhima Indraratna, Chandrasiri Kumara, Song-Ping Zhu, Scott Sloan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Rock joints exert an enormous influence on the permeability of a rock mass because they act as interconnecting networks that provide pathways for fluids to permeate and flow within the rock structure. The apertures in rock joints are irregular in nature and induce flows that cannot be described by the parallel-plate theory based on planar joints or the classical cubic flow relationships. In this study, a two-dimensional (2D) hydraulic aperture distribution was considered to develop a mathematical model for fracture flow. In this approach, the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation was integrated over the joint aperture and converted to an equivalent 2D …

Vertical Stresses In Stone Column And Soft Clay During One-Dimensional Consolidation Test, Firman Siahaan, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Sudip Basack

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In the practical design of stone column for soft soil improvement, the stress ratio between stone column and soft clay has been largely calculated based on the surface stresses. The vertical stress and pore pressure changes in the surrounding soft clay have not been adequately measured and compared with column stresses in the past research works. Similarly, the influence of the morphological properties of column particles on these stresses has been largely overlooked in the practice. As part of the laboratory testing programme, onedimensional consolidation tests were carried out on a unit cell which comprised of soft kaolin clay and …

Soil Disturbance Analysis Due To Vertical Drain Installation, Buddhima Indraratna, Darshana Perera, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Richard Kelly

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The installation of drains creates a disturbed region known as a smear zone where the change in the clay structure affects the horizontal permeability and compressibility. The parameters required to characterise the smear effect are the extent of the smear zone and the ratio of the horizontal coefficient of permeability in the undisturbed zone and in the smear zone. Only limited studies have been carried out on different aspects of soil disturbance due to driving vertical drains and its effects on the subsequent consolidation. In this paper the disturbed zone around a rectangular mandrel was characterised using soil samples obtained …

Soil Distrubance Associated With Mandrel-Driven Prefabricated Vertical Drains: Field Experience, Darshana Perera, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

It has been widely known that load-settlement behaviors of cast-in placed bored piles are determined not only by the soil properties alone but also by the construction methods. This paper discusses the performances of (6) instrumented test piles of various diameters (80; 100 and 120 cm) and constructed using different techniques i.e. mud-water, polymer slurry and full-casing under relatively uniform subsurface condition that consisting of very stiff silty clay in West Jakarta. Each test pile was instrumented by vibrating wire strain gauge (VWSGs) and loaded to near ultimate load ( 2.5 times design load) with objective to obtain the loadtransfer …

Smear Zone Characterization Associated With Vertical Drain Installation, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Buddhima Indraratna, Made Dodiek Wirya Ardana

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this study the characteristics and extent of the smear zone were investigated using a undisturbed sample. The aim was to capture the realistic characteristics of the smear zone in relation to the in-situ structure of soil during the installation of prefabricated vertical drain (PVD) using a steel mandrel. The extent of the smear zone for Bulli clay was determined on the basis of normalised permeability (kh/khu) and a reduction in the water content upon consolidation. The permeability and compressibility of the soil were investigated to determine the extent to which the soil surrounding the PVD had become disturbed.

A Simulation Study Of Support Break-Off And Water Inrush During Mining Under The High Confined And Thick Unconsolidated Aquifer, Yu Liu, Qimeng Liu, Zhouyang Jin, Liyong Cai, Xueli Cui

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The thick Cenozoic unconsolidated aquifer is deposited under Sunan syncline core in Huaibei coalfield, the water yield property of unconsolidated bottom aquifer is strong and water pressure is high in some areas (up to 4 MPa in some areas). Water inrush accident often occurs during mining under unconsolidated aquifer, the biggest characteristic is abnormal mine pressure and support break-off during water inrush accident comparing with normal condition. In order to study mechanism of support break-off and water inrush during mining under the high confined thick unconsolidated aquifer, a simulation of similar material was designed. The experimental results indicated that, under …

High-Performance Binary Blazed Grating Coupler Used In Silicon-Based Hybrid Photodetector Integration, Hongqiang Li, Yu Liu, Chunjiao Miao, Meiling Zhang, Wenqian Zhou, Chunxiao Tang, Enbang Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

An efficient and high-performance binary blazed grating coupler was designed based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) used for silicon-based hybrid photodetector integration in an arrayed waveguide grating demodulation integrated microsystem. A relatively high coupling efficiency was obtained to optimize mode matching by the finite-difference time-domain method by choosing appropriate grating parameters, including period, etching depth, and fill factor. Coupling efficiency output at 1550 nm for the TE mode reached 68%. This value was >60% in the wavelength range of 1450 to 1600 nm, specifically 71.4% around 1478 nm. An InP/InGaAs photodetector and SOI wafer were integrated by using benzocyclobutene (BCB) bonding. When …
