Humanae Vitae At Fifty Years And The Economics Of The Pill, Andrew Beauchamp

Economics Faculty Publications

This article examines how economic analysis of the social consequences of the birth control pill dovetail with the predictions and pronouncements of Roman Catholic social teaching. Direct, equilibrium, and indirect consequences each, in turn, confirm that the advent of the pill has coincided with increased rates of divorce and out-of-wedlock births alongside increased participation of women in the formal labor market. These findings lead to the conclusion that Pope Paul VI’s Humanae Vitae and other papal teachings on sex, marriage, and the family deserve to be revisited and reevaluated in light of this history.

This paper examines the ecological, sociological, and economic impacts of genetic testing offered commercially by companies like 23andMe. It applies genetic testing to the Veblenian Dichotomy, discusses the application of genetic testing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and provides commentary on the ethical implications of genetic testing and the impossibility to detract normative and positive approaches from the potential effects of further innovation within genetic testing.

Social interactions are complex and constantly changing decision making environments. Prior research (Mayer, Davis, & Schoorman, 1995) has found that people use their trust in others as a criterion for decision making during social interactions. Trust is not only relevant for human-human interaction, but has also been found to be important for human-machine interaction as well, which is becoming a growing feature in many work domains (De Visser et al., 2016). As a result of a deterrence and incapacitation focused criminal justice system in the United States, reentry programming has become integral to both reduce criminal justice spending and mass incarceration. Reentry programming assists those released from prison with reintegration into society to prevent recidivism and allow the returning citizen to become a productive member of society. This study evaluated one such reentry program in Montgomery County Ohio. The Reentry Career Alliance Academy (RCAA) is a career focused work readiness curriculum that also includes workshops with community stakeholders. Objective: This study measured observers’ abilities to identify letter targets distributed among number distractors in a virtual shopping environment. Head-turning behavior was also continuously recorded throughout each trial. The data were then used to test whether a model’s prediction for the duration of visibility needed for target detection in a virtual shopping environment (Parikh & Mowrey, 2014) generalize to the more realistic shopping task of identifying a target on a shelf. Team and peer-assisted learning methodologies are becoming increasingly prevalent in both academia and industry. Learning with others is used with the assumption that individuals learn better in groups. The studies in this paper examine aspects of Peer-Assisted Learning in order to understand whether the claims of improved individual learning are substantiated, and if so, how that improved learning occurs. The cognitive mechanism examined in the studies below is the development of trust between peers on a learning task. Recent studies in geopolitical forecasting have identifiedpsychological variables that predict forecasting accuracy.We studied the effect of providing human forecasters withautomated information search and task management supporttools. Our research aimed to determine whether use of thesupport tools could explain additional variance in forecast-ing performance above and beyond psychological variables.We found that the provided tools encouraged participants todo more work (i.e., information search, communication, re-flection, etc.), which in turn resulted in improved forecast-ing performance.
