Victimization In Library School Closing Rhetoric: A Response To A Library Quarterly Symposium, Stephen Paul Foster

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Librarianship continues to witness the closing of its professional schools, including the recent elimination of two of its oldest and most prestigious graduate programs. The closures raise important questions about the profession and suggest that critical scrutiny is needed, not only of the processes of change that bring about the closings but also of librarianship's own rhetoric of response to the closings. This article is a critique of the July 1991 Library Quarterly symposium on graduate library school program elimination. It focuses on the rhetoric of three of the symposium articles.

In 1992, a business expansion and retention survey was conducted in Clay Township, Ohio. This survey asked business owners about factors that might impact their firms in the future and about the needs of the business community.

This study analyzes the survey findings and presents recommendations to lay the foundation for future economic development in the Township.

Specific development goals should include:

1) Improving cooperation between local businesses and the Township government. 2) Committing of the Township to an economic development plan. 3) Helping firms improve their competitiveness by helping them use local, State and Federal programs.

The main purpose of this thesis is to evaluate Afghanistan's future economic prospects especially in the aftermath of Russian occupation and the prolonged Islamist armed resistance by the peoples of Afghanistan. To achieve this goal, it is, however, necessary to provide some historical background about the country and to review the nation's economic progress before the onset of the Russian war (1979-1989) . While the presentation of this thesis has a historical dimension, it investigates and evaluates the consequences of communist rule and Soviet occupation. This paper will discuss the history of African American women workers in the United States. Slavery will be examined to show that the economic hardships it caused for this group has far reaching influences upon today's economic picture. Human capital and segmented market theories will be discussed to determine how African American women workers are progressing in the wage labor force as we move toward the next century.

The Dayton Chamber of Commerce under the auspices of the "Challenge ’95" group commissioned the project to evaluate Dayton-Springfield in comparison with 44 other metro areas of interest to the Chamber. The purpose was to provide a picture of where Dayton-Springfield stands vis-a-vis the other metros with regard to its economic and allied areas, such as working environment, etc. The project was discussed before it achieved its final form in May ’92 and work started on June 15th ’92. This investigation attempts to see if Card and Kreuger's retrospective findings that a significant positive relationship between higher ratios of female to male teachers and later increased earnings of workers extends to current test results of Ohio School Districts. One possible explanation for increased earnings later in life to be associated with a higher ratio of female teachers is that lack of alternative opportunities for females in the labor market before 1966 made it possible to hire more effective female teachers for a given salary. With the recent change in social policy allowing women to enter combat roles:, the issue of women in the military has gained much attention. Although women have served the U.S. in every war since the Revolutionary War (although not always in uniform), the contemporary debate about women in the military is being addressed again in the press and on Capitol Hill.

In a multidatabase system, schematic conflicts between two objects are usually of interest only when the objects have some semantic affinity. In this paper we try to reconcile the two perspectives. We first define the concept of semantic proximity and provide a semantic taxonomy. We then enumerate and classify the schematic and data conflicts. We discuss possible semantic similarities between two objects that have various types of schematic and data conflicts. Issues of uncertain information and inconsistent information are also addressed.

Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

The Dayton Power and Light Company requested that an econometric model be created to forecast steam sales and customers. The Company currently uses econometric models for its electric sales, electric customer, and peak usage forecasts. The Company also uses econometric models to forecast natural gas sales, customers, peak day, and hourly usage. The steam business did not have a forecasting model that was easy to work with, and which produced reasonable results. Transactions, Costs, And The Supply Of Low-Income Rental Housing: The Case Of Section 8 Rental Certificates And Vouchers In Dayton, Ohio, Michele Dawn Mccarren

Either private markets or publicly-subsidized programs can provide low-income housing. Federal programs such as the Section 8 low-income housing assistance program combines public funds with the existing private housing stock to provide housing for low-income families. Tenants, (or consumers) receive rent subsidies through either vouchers or rental certificates. The housing authority pays the voucher or rental certificate amount directly to the landlord each month.

Transaction costs, defined as the costs of negotiating, creating and enforcing contracts, determine in part the incentives for landlords to participate in government programs. Costs such as time, increased investment to maintain government housing quality standards, …
