For more than two years now, members of OneDayton have been quietly and methodically exploring the possibility of changing the structure of local government. To have any thoughtful, meaningful public dialogue on something so different and difficult as changing the very structure of local government, is a daunting endeavor of immense proportion and importance.

We compare two distinct approaches for querying data in the context of the life sciences. The first approach utilizes conventional databases to store the data and provides intuitive form-based interfaces to facilitate querying of the data, commonly used by the life science researchers that we study. The second approach utilizes a large OWL ontology and the same datasets associated as RDF instances of the ontology. Both approaches are being used in parallel by a team of cell biologists in their daily research activities, with the objective of gradually replacing the conventional approach with the knowledge-driven one. A much-debated question in object recognition is whether expertise for faces and expertise for non-face objects utilize common perceptual information. We investigated this issue by assessing the diagnostic information required for different types of expertise. Specifically, we asked whether face categorization and expert car categorization at the subordinate level relies on the same spatial frequency (SF) scales. Fifteen car experts and fifteen novices performed a category verification task with spatially filtered images of faces, cars, and airplanes. Images were categorized based on their basic (e.g. ‘‘car’’) and subordinate level (e.g. ‘‘Japanese car’’) identity. The effect of expertise was not evident …

During recent crises, citizens (sensors) are increasingly using social media to share variety of information- situation on the ground, emerging needs, donation offers, damage, etc. In such an evolving ad-hoc community, how can we extract actionable nuggets from the social media streams to aid relief efforts? This doctoral consortium presentation summarizes a framework to analyze social data and manage information to assist coordination by focusing on three important questions to answer: Whom to coordinate with, Why to coordinate and How to coordinate, with exemplary insights for needs and availability from the recent disaster events.

Demo: Approximate Semantic Matching In The Collider Event Processing Engine, Souleiman Hasan, Kalpa Gunaratna, Yongrui Qin, Edward Curry

This demo presents a use case from the energy management domain. It builds upon previous work on approximate semantic matching of heterogeneous events and compares two semantic matching scenarios: exact and approximate. It illustrates how a large number of exact matching event subscriptions are needed to match heterogeneous power consumption events. It then demonstrates how a small number of approximate semantic matching subscriptions are needed but possibly with a lower true positives/negatives performance. The demo is delivered via the COLLIDER approximate event processing engine currently under development in DERI.

The challenge for our panel was to address the opportunities and challenges of synthetic task environments for basic research on human performance in sociotechnical systems. In doing this, the classical three-body problem from physics is used as a metaphor to illustrate the contrast between dyadic and triadic semiotic models of cognitive systems. This paper establishes connections between the frameworks of social provisioning and functional finance, and discusses a post-Keynesian–Institutionalist theory of the public sector that emerges out of these linkages. The concept of social provisioning has emerged out of Institutional economics, and has been further developed by institutional and other heterodox economists. Its potential as a methodological foundation that connects various heterodox approaches has received some growing attention. Such discussions have not referred in an analytical manner to functional finance. Background: Cholera outbreaks result in significant morbidity worldwide. Transmission of the disease may be influenced by weather fluctuations, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and excessive rainfall, and socioeconomic status (SES), including income and education. El Niño events may influence many aspects of the climate, including the amount of rainfall occurring in a given year and surface water temperature. This study aimed to assess the influences of extreme weather and SES factors on cholera incidence in India during the seventh cholera pandemic (1961-2008).

Most of the existing approaches for detecting diseases/risk score form observations (sensor and textual) ignore the presence of any prior knowledge of the disease. In this work, we start top-down by enumerating the symptoms of Parkinson's Disease (PD) and map the symptoms to its possible manifestations in sensor observations (bottom-up). We show such manifestations and further use these manifestations as features to build classifiers to differentiate between the PD patients and the control group.

At the O'Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing conference in 2011 (toccon.com/toc2011), Kevin Kelly, senior maverick at Wired, discussed the future of publishing in terms of access versus ownership. He believes accessing, not owning, content is the future. As a librarian, I thought this made perfect sense--after all, that's what libraries have offered for centuries.

However, putting myself in the shoes of publishers, those who rely on sales and revenue, this sounded a bit frightening. How would an access-based future alter the publishing and book distribution industry? How, if at all, might this affect libraries?
