A study was made to investigate the number of elementary school media specialists part1e1pat1n.g 1n the instructional program. Additional problems of the study were to further investigate what instructional tasks were performed and what values were assigned to the instructional tasks in a total media program.

The study on the status of school media personnel in Iowa for the school year 1977-1978 yielded data concerning age, race, sex, level of education, and salary. The researcher used the information found on school media personnel from the Basic Educational Data Survey for the population of the study. The data gathered was tabulated and statistically analyzed. The mean age of school media personnel was found to be 42.6 years and the median age was found to be 40.0 years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the one-handed and the two-handed backhand strokes in tennis skill performance of beginning junior high students. Skill in the two backhand strokes was measured by performance on the Revised Breer-Miller Backhand Drive Test with Ball-Boy Modification. Fifty-four female seventh- and eighth-grade students from Malcolm Price Laboratory School were selected as subjects. Each class was randomly assigned to either Group A or Group Band administered the Revised Dyer Backboard Tennis Test used to classify students as beginners. Media specialists of today face the challenging task of obtaining appropriate materials to meet the particular needs of the school. Numerous reviewing media are available for guidance in the selection of children's books. Along with evaluative comments, age or grade level ranges are provided for specific books. In an attempt to determine whether reading levels are included in the age/grade level ranges, the readability estimates of forty selected primary books were obtained using the Spache Readability Formula and compared to the age/grade levels assigned to them by Booklist and School Library Journal. Booklist's "Best of the Best, 1970-75," is a recommended reading list for young adults. No readability levels are included. The Dale-Chall, the Flesch, and the Fry readability formulas were, therefore, applied to the books on this list. Each formula is based upon a 100 word sample. The number of samples varies, depending upon the formula used. The Fry formula requires the use of a graph and the Dale-Chall formula uses the Dale word list. The purpose of the study was to determine how Iowa public high school media centers trained student assistants, to what tasks they were assigned, and in what manner their work was officially recognized or awarded. A questionnaire was sent to 111 schools asking which training method--formal course, handbook, or individual instruction--was used to teach specific tasks. The media specialists were also asked to identify the tasks assigned to student assistants and what type of award was given to the students for their work. The research study was directed to Iowa school librarians and sought information in the areas of censorship and selection. A questionnaire survey was submitted to 155 elementary and secondary school librarians in the Spring of 1975. 130 replies were returned and tabulated.

The results of the study show that fifty-one percent of the schools had a materials selection policy. Of the sixty-six schools reporting materials selection policies all but three had policies which included procedures to be used when complaints against materials were lodged. The purpose of the study was to determine what relationship exists between two survey sponsoring organizations and the responses of a randomly selected group of Iowa public high school librarians (n = 200) to a revised version of a library censorship questionnaire developed by Charles H. Busha. One hundred of these librarians received the mailed questionnaires with the stated sponsorship of the Department of Library Science, at the University of Northern Iowa (85% response). This research investigates the spatial distribution of surface karst features along the Silurian Escarpment in northeastern Iowa. A 30 square mile area of Elk Townships in Cla:rton and Delaware Counties was selected for intensive investigation. All surface karst features within the study area were located in the field and plotted on a 7.5 minute topographic map. A generic model is presented to explain the process, causation, and geologic time period of active karstification. Field evidence supports the hypothesis that the karst landforms along the Silurian Escarpment in northeastern Iowa are not solutionnl in nature, but rather mechanically induced features. The …

The museum at the University of Northern Iowa has been an important adjunct of the institution since the last decade of the nineteenth century. The first 65 or so years of its existence are reviewed by the late Mr. Fred Cram, then archivist at the Iowa State Teachers College, in a 15-page paper, “The Museum at the Iowa State Normal School,” prepared in 1955 at the request of Dr. Emmett J. Cable, curator of the museum. The information on this era, summarized below, is gleaned from this paper unless otherwise noted.
