Populations derived from crosses of elite genotypes are commonly used in plant breeding programs. Knowledge of the genetic variation among individuals and their progenies within F2 populations is essential for effective selection of important traits. The genetic variation and number of effective factors affecting the expression of quantitative traits within 30 F2 maize (Zea mays L.) populations were determined by different methods suggested for study of F2 populations. Estimates of heritability and number of effective factors varied among F2 populations for each trait, primarily because of the differences in trait expression between parents of crosses and the environmental effects upon …

The purpose of this research was to determine which, if any, financial and economic variables significantly affect the closing value of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index. The goal of finding the significant variables which affect the Standard & Poor's 500 Index was accomplished by performing a multiple regression analysis. This regression model used the closing quarterly value of the Standard & Poor's 500 Index as the dependent variable. The independent variables included the 90-day Treasury Bill rate, domestic corporate profits, and real disposable personal income. The focus of this study is the perceptions and expectations of rural and urban public school principals toward school library media specialists and library programs. Both elementary and secondary principals in a three county area of Northwestern Illinois were targeted.

All 41 public school principals in Carroll, Jo Davies, and Stephenson counties were sent survey instruments containing 23 opinion statements taken from the "Guidelines for School Library Media Program Development," "Guidelines for Fulfilling Roles and Responsibilities," and "Guidelines for Facilities," in Information Power. Principals were instructed to choose I of 5 alternative opinions ranging from (essential) to (undesirable).

The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether health condition affects the impact self-care information has on intentions to engage in preventive health behaviors. The concept of creating a "teachable moment" toward selfcare information based on health condition was also investigated. The theoretical model used in the study was the Health Belief Model (HBM). The purpose of my research was to identify how young women activists interpret the purpose of their work on a clinic defense project, defending abortion clinics during protests. Each young woman had expectations of her work as a feminist activist. When her experiences were similar to what she envisioned as the purpose of feminist activism, she felt a sense of empowerment because she felt she was contributing to the "cause." Examples of contributing experiences included clinic defense trainings, lobbying, opposition research, grassroots organizing, and the physical defense of abortion clinics. The probation revocation hearing is one of many decision points in the legal system. Some probation violators are revoked from probation supervision and ordered to serve a prison sentence, while others are given another chance to successfully complete their period of supervision. Some legal scholars and researchers believe systematic racial discrimination occurs in the justice system, while others maintain that all criminal defendants are treated the same regardless of race. The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which athletes in selected contact and semi-contact sports commit intentional acts of violence during competition. A second purpose was to determine how athletes justify or rationalize the use of intentional violent behavior. The subjects (N = 85) for this study were all male athletes from one mid-western University (age 18-42): football athletes (n = 31), basketball athletes (n = 12), wrestling athletes (n = 14) and soccer athletes (n = 28). Social exchange theory suggests that when dating people with higher prestige, persons of lower prestige will need to compensate for the lack of prestige through their dating behaviors. The present study partially replicated and extended research that examined the effect of social prestige on the date selection process. It looked at the dating behaviors of college students in regard to the social prestige of each of the dating partners. Alcohol use, sexual permissiveness, sexual behaviors, and the amount of money spent on dates were examined with data from self-administered questionnaires.

The purpose of this study was to develop a self-report measure for assessing adolescent suicidal behavior. This measure, the Adolescent Reasons For Living (ARFL), was modeled after the adult Reasons For Living Inventory (RFL) developed by Linehan, Goodstein, Nielsen, and Chiles (1983). Psychiatric inpatients, high school students, and college undergraduates were participants in this study. The development of the new measure closely followed the guidelines offered by DeVellis (1991) for designing new measures. The final version of the ARFL contained 35 items that loaded on six factors. The purpose of the present study was to assess motivation factors from a cognitive/social learning model for choosing a particular dieting style based on athletic status. One hundred ten athletes and 119 nonathletes were asked to fill out a series of questionnaires which included: A demographics inventory, an experimental questionnaire containing eight dieting methods (5 pathogenic dieting methods and 3 nonpathogenic dieting methods), the Beck Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory, and the Bulimia Test. This thesis attempts to review evidence supporting a positive error-reaction time correlation in category verification tasks. All reviewed models predict that categorization errors will increase when the time needed to make a membership judgement increases. This is explained either as a result of the structure of categories (e.g., as another manifestation of category fuzziness), or as a product of the category verification process (e.g., attributed in general memory models to the random nature of the retrieval process). The purpose of this research was to identify how participants created and maintained the relational dimension of power during interaction ritual processes on a brain injury ward. Power is defined as relational indicating that relationships between individuals are necessary in order for power to exist. These relationships, according to Kemper and Collins, occur at the micro level and provide the "glue and the dynamics" of the social structure. The research took place at a health care facility in the Midwest. The participants included ten patients and fifteen employees. Archaeology: Puzzle of the Past is a design for a museum exhibit to better explain archaeology to the public. Its purpose is to change the audience's perspective from one of object orientation to visualization of archaeology as a process. The exhibit utilizes a chronological and concrete approach to move the visitors through the major steps in the archaeological process -- including survey, excavation, labwork, and interpretation -- as they occur within the parameters of a fictitious archaeological site. In addition, interactive exercises are designed to be included within each area to reinforce the message.

Selective Recovery Of Β-Galactosidase With Charged Fusion Tails Using Ion-Exchange Membranes, Erika A. Thiem, Meng H. Heng

We explored the feasibility of attaching charged tails to a target protein, in this case β-galactosidase, for selective recovery. In this process, an ion-exchange membrane was used for selective binding and release of β-galactosidase with the attached purification fusions. Strength of binding and purity of eluate increased with increasing tail length. In addition, activity yield was improved with the implementation of an intermediate partial elution recycle procedure.

Effects Of Competition And Predation On Prothonotary Warblers And House Wrens Nesting In Eastern Iowa, Timothy Brush

In a fragmented midwestern floodplain forest, a small Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea) population experienced high competition with House Wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and mammalian nest predation in 1988-89. Despite the provision of 3 types of nest boxes and higher water levels, Prothonotary Warblers did not nest successfully and decreased in the fragmented forest in 1990-91. House Wrens used >90% of the nest boxes in both years. Wren territories doubled within the nestbox area, while remaining constant on an unmanipulated area. In contrast, a larger warbler population had high nesting success during 1990-91 in a relatively unfragmented, wetter forest tract. Such forests, …

Our research examined whether enhanced separation and purification of mutant enzymes could be obtained on ion-exchange membranes. Solutions of three mutants of Aspergillus awamori glucoamylase were passed through an anionic exchange membrane, as well as one mutant of T4 lysozyme through a cationic exchange membrane. The mutant enzymes were modified by adding "charged fusions'', polypeptides of either aspartic acid residues to increase the overall negative charge of the enzyme or arginine residues to increase the overall positive charge. The effect of the mutations on the purification of glucoamylase from a "modified" fermentation broth were examined at two different elution pHs, …

Age And Developmental History Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii

Iowa fens are small, mineorotrophic peatlands maintained by shallow groundwater. Eighteen fen sites located across northern Iowa were mapped and radiocarbon dated to assess the timing of initial peat accumulation. The radiocarbon ages span the Holocene, ranging from 1,240 to 10,900 B.P.; however most fens postdate 5,000 yr B.P. The dominance of late-Holocene ages suggests that Holocene climatic change may have strongly influenced the record of peat accumulation. During the mid-Holocene Iowa was warmer and drier than at present, and peat was degraded or accumulated slowly in fens. The range of ages also implies that the commencement and subsequent rate …
