If youth development is a profession, then it follows that the attitudes and skills needed by youth workers should be similar across specific program settings. This session explored this assumption by discussing the staff competencies needed for quality service delivery. First, lessons from ongoing "cross-program" research were discussed and then a panel composed of a variety of youth serving organization discussed similarities and differences in essential staff competencies.

Youth development as a profession was discussed in terms of staff competencies in the panel that discussed best practices (Creating a Foundation: Principles of Practice). During this session about community perspectives, a panel of community youth development professionals discussed their perspectives of the profession and their successes in the youth development area. In addition, the audience was engaged in discourse about topics presented throughout the Symposium. The following is an edited version of the transcript of that panel discussion.

Do you think you have great programs, yet youth are not participating? Are they staying away because they do not know or cannot afford to come? Or do they not come because they do not want to? This session explored reasons youth do not participate in different programs or activities and examined strategies to encourage their involvement. Approaches for identifying and accommodating youth needs were presented. Why are we here at the Symposium? I firmly believe we must address the "whys" and "why nots" before we can more accurately and effectively address the "how to."

The University of Northern Iowa's Youth Leadership Studies program was established to foster professionalism in the youth development field. To assist in that endeavor the National Youth Leadership Symposium was begun in 1990, and has served as a working conference that focuses on solving practical problems for the emerging youth development profession. The purpose of the Symposium is to serve as an agent of change by raising questions, examining circumstances, making decisions and taking actions that realize that common ground and agreement needed to contribute to the profession. In order to ascertain whether local patterns corresponded to the national trends, which show fewer female and minority students enrolling in and completing high school physical science courses, the Cedar Rapids Community School District studied the course enrollment and drop patterns of seniors in one of the District high schools. Male students predominated in physics and AP Chemistry, and the proportion of males in AP Physics was significantly greater than the proportion of females. The proportion of females in chemistry was significantly greater than their proportion in the senior class. Course dropping patterns revealed a statistically significant relationship between gender …

Programs should be developed with specific benefits, values and goals in mind. For it is only through an underlying commitment to fostering these benefits that they will be achieved. It takes whole villages and it takes all members of the community, regardless of race, creed, color, neighborhood for that village to be whole. People need unimpeded access to that wholeness.

The menstrual cycle is not only a physiological experience, it is also a psychological, social, and cultural one. However, the majority of the research on menstruation views the experience of menstruation via the medical model. Through this lens, menstruation is not a natural, healthy part of a woman's experience, but a pathology requiring diagnosis and treatment. This study focuses on whether cultural and social expectations affect women's psychological evaluations of the menstrual experience, and particularly, whether identification with feminism affects attitudes toward menstruation and the physical and emotional symptoms experienced. Survey Of Hematozoa And Intestinal Helminths Infecting Green-Winged Teal In Guthrie County, Iowa, Rick Klann, Bryan Hellyer

Five helminths and one sporozoan were recovered from 21 hunter-killed green-winged teal collected from Lakin Slough in Guthrie County, Iowa during October and November of 1991. The sporozoan, Leucocytozoon simondi, was identified in blood smears from all 21 teal. The helminths recovered from the alimentary tract included three trematodes, Cotylurus flabelliformis, Echinostoma trivolvis and Zygocotyle lunata; a hymenolepid tapeworm; and one acanthocephalan, Corynosoma constrictum. The ecological factors associated with infection by these parasites are discussed.

Paleokarst And Associated Mineralization At The Linwood Mine, Scott County Iowa, Paul L. Garvin

Operations at the Linwood Mine in Scott County, Iowa, have exposed, on two working levels, extensive pre-Pennsylvanian paleokarst and associated sediment fillings and mineralization in Middle Devonian limestones. Cavities in Davenport-Spring Grove host rocks range up to 270 meters in length and are virtually all filled with fluviatile sediment. Cavities in Cedar Rapids host rocks, on average, are smaller and some are unfilled. Limestone dissolution was controlled by high-angle fractures with a wide variety of orientations and by bedding plane and stylolitic partings. Dissolutional features on both levels of the mine provide evidence for phreatic and vadose processes. Most of …
