1935 marked the first year of parimutuel betting governed by the Maine State Racing Commission. According to the First Annual Report of the Maine State Racing Commission, 52 days of racing between August and October 1935 generated $536,296 in gross wagers, returning $478,067.75 in winnings to the public.
The five days of racing at the Maine State Fair in Bangor, August 20-24, generated a total of $49,274 in wagers, paying out $43,924.70.

The poem, Frank P. Fox is described: "This poem was suggested by the death of a famous old horseman known and loved wherever horses hoofs were heard."
Fox, identified in the March 11, 1935 New York Times as the "oldest harness racing driver in the United States" died on March 10, 1935 at the age of 82. Fox began his racing career at age 14 and raced actively until 1933. The Freshman was a weekly, student newsletter issued on Mondays throughout the academic year. The newsletter included calendar notices, coverage of campus social events, lectures, and athletic teams. The intent of the publication was to create unity, a sense of community, and class spirit among first year students. Included in this edition is an editorial authored on behalf of "The Co-eds of '38" commenting on the divisive nature of Freshman Rules imposed by upper classmen and requesting first-year students be treated with respect.
